    Career minor league numbers entering 2006, .285/.339/.409. He's got like a 650 OPS in the majors this year. He's a short pudge ball with just about no upside and no history of production. If my choices were Jacque for Melky or keep Jacque for three years, I'd probably make the deal just to clear the space. But Melky doesn't seem like a prize to me.

    8) Is it possible to get rid of that smiley? Or change it? We deal with numbers all the time in baseball talks and 8 ) is always changed to 8) when you remove the space.

    Any updates on Wood's towel throwing? He's probably just going to keep throwing that towel all over the place until the used car market picks up and he can find a new job.

    My teams don't have poor fundamentals. My teams don't make baserunning mistakes. My teams always play deep into October. Not exactly excuses, but he's used them as a way to deflect blame from him for poor play by his Cubs teams.

    :lol: Seriously though, I don't dare hope that they would release Neifi. He's been worse than normal, and he didn't have the fluke April to mask the overall horrible numbers. It's not likely they could part with the guy, but there has to be some thought of the idea. In the end the best we can hope for is a release of Womack. They are similarly worthless, but when it comes to releasing players, the Cubs will always choose the guy they don't have to pay to go away.

    Yeah, Glendon will eat the apple, and more. In all seriousness, I wouldn't mind having the Cubs pay for their contract for the rest of this year (not the following two years in Jones' case) if that's what it took for the deal to go through. If they are paying even part of the contract they better get significant talent in return. NY knows Glendon well.

    I don't like Melky. His minor league career was quite pathetic, and his major league career has been no better. He's very young, but I don't see the upside. I'd say he'd be lucky to ever come close to the type of player Jones already is, and that's not even much of an accomplishment. I'd rather get somebody who could help the ballclub if at all possible. Maybe give up Jones, Walker and a bullpen arm to get something of greater value. Throw-in Rusch for the fun of it.

    It's a peculiarity, but it's not that hard to understand. In the grand scheme of things, in comparison to all ballplayers, these guys are all elite baseball players. They are very good and very capable of doing amazing things with a bat and ball (well, maybe not all). The thing about baseball is that time and repeated competition against other elite players tends to bring the cream to the top. Many of these guys are good enough to hit against the best pitchers now and again and put together amazing streaks. But only the best maintain those numbers over time. And time has proven that Jacque isn't a 850-900 OPS player. This isn't only a baseball thing though. Every year you see a running back come out of nowhere to have a great stretch where he dominates. Some guys put together an amazing single game performance. Or maybe a 4-6 game streak, and possibly even a season or two of greatness. But only the elite produce year in year out. Jim Miller looked like Marino for about a 4 game stretch a few years ago. That is equivalent to a 40 game stretch in baseball.

    I think if your team has never won a WS, or they've never won since moving to your city, you're in just as bad a situation as Cubs fans. I think 25 years is still relatively soon enough that you can't get too worked up about it, especially if you've had some success in the meantime. Once you get around the 40 year mark though it's pretty much the same thing as 80 or 90. Whenever fans could be born, grow up, have kids and have their kids become adults, you're talking about a long drought.

    Chesty LaRue The Fat Alsonseca? Isn't that redundant? That's like saying the white Heinrich or the short Danny DeVit, or the ugly Kathy Griffin.

    A year from now if he's putting up a .254/.315/.427 line (his 2004 numbers) we'd love to just see him dumped. His solid 2006 numbers make it more possible to get rid of him. If you think he's capable of maintaining these numbers, I understand not wanting to dump him. But if you believe his career path indicates this won't last long, you'd be more than willing to just get rid of him. But any trade of Jones is going to be more than a salary dump. Hendry would get back something for Jones or else he wouldn't trade him. Also, even if Hendry was able to dump Jones's contract there is little hope that he'd be able to wisely apply the money saved on a solid improvement.

    What difference does it make if he's doing well right now. Jones has done well over short periods quite often in his career. The point is he's not good overall. If I had any confidence that he'd maintain this level of production for three years, I'd be all for holding onto him and his contract. The problem is that he is past his prime, and his career path makes it very unlikely that he will maintain these numbers. He is not going to be a core player on any solid Cubs team.

    As far as I know, most park adjusted analysis comes out after the season, when all the data for all the parks that season is in. Teams change the park layout all the time, meaning year over year it's not always stable.

Which means that the people who own the pork belly contracts are saying, "Hey, we're losing all our darn money, and Christmas is around the corner, and I ain't gonna have no money to buy my son the G.I. Joe with the kung-fu grip! And my wife ain't gonna f... my wife ain't gonna make love to me if I got no money!" So they're panicking right now, they're screaming "SELL! SELL!" to get out before the price keeps dropping. They're panicking out there right now, I can feel it. Get back in there and sell! SELL GO#$@%MIT! SELL! Mortimer, your brother is not well. We better call an ambulance. $#@& him! Now, you listen to me! I want trading reopened right now. Get those brokers back in here! Turn those machines back on! TURN THOSE MACHINES BACK ON!

    He's also very similar to the type of player Hendry would like. Established (ie. past his prime), has a reputation for being good in some traditional stats (HR/RBI) even though he really hasn't even been much of a great RBI guy much in his career. He's a significant name, but not an elite player.

    Can't argue with anything you are saying. I just feel the net outcome will be positive in December. I feel 2 staright dismal years will motivate him. What type of positive net outcome? Are we talking something that takes the Cubs from two sub .500 seasons to an 85 win season? Frankly I don't care if the team wins 75 or 85. Improving the team back over .500 isn't good enough. If he can't turn this team into a 95 win team by next season his tenure is complete failure. He shouldn't get trouble for improving the team from the lows he created. The only net improvement I'm interested in is the one that takes the team from an 88-89 win good but not great team, to an actual great team.

    It's not that all his moves suck. It's just the net outcome sucks. Eyre and Howry were not dumb signings. Putting the bulk of the effort in the bullpen while ignoring problems in the lineup and pitching rotation was dumb. It's not hard to sign or trade for a quality player. What Hendry seems to have problems with is fielding a 25 man roster worthy of the money he spends and capable of great success.

    By pantsing them as they circle the bases? ???huh??? No dictionary entry for pantsing. What do you mean? As in they are wearing pants, Maddux sneaks up behind, and they now have pants around their ankles. Ah, as in "de-pantsing" them? Yeah, I've heard both ways. I probably prefer the latter, but didn't feel like reaching for 3 more keystrokes.

    You think Hendry will be fired that soon and replaced with a competent GM? No, I don't think so. But I think we'll see a different Jim Hendry this offseason. Different as in he'll actually do something or different as in he'll actually do something smart? He might change how aggressive he is to get the guys he wants, but the problem is he wants the wrong guys and I don't think he'll change that.
