  1. Yes, that is probably the most important point.
  2. Did you call me a butthead? Why I oughta.... :club:
  3. The answer is to get the rebuilding program started early. It's kind of like having a pitcher stop pitching when you know he's going under the knife soon. If you know a guy is gone at the end of the season, why keep him until the end of the season. Moves made today and the rest of the season, including managerial decisions about playing time and pitcher usage, will affect next season. So why keep a guy around to make those decisions when you don't plan on having him take a stake in next season? It's similar to the Bears keeping Mike Hatley on for the 2001 draft even though everybody knew he wasn't going to stay. Sure enough he was gone after the draft. It's not a question of whether a guy will give his best effort, it's just a matter of no good coming from a lame duck situation. Management types with no stake in the future of the organization should not be allowed to make management decisions.
  4. If the Cubs get no hits he won't throw 97 pitches.
  5. Trade or release? I'd release Neifi yesterday. Same with a lot of others. But if you're talking trade you are talking about trying to get something back for somebody you don't think will help much in the future. Jones and Dempster are the two best guys in this scenario. Both would involve getting rid of a contract that could hold back the team in the future. And both could draw interest from teams in the race.
  6. I know! I don't get it? Once he gets to the majors he can't pitch a strike to save his life. His fastball is average at best as is his change. How's he doing it in AAA? Does he look different? Little known fact. Major league hitters are better than minor league hitters. When players move up a level it takes time to adjust. Most guys struggle, and many even look awful while going through that adjustment period. And most adjustment periods take longer than a handful of starts.
  7. I have to say I'm shocked at this article. Kiley has been a Baker apologist up to now, at least he's always been a "it's not fair to blame it on Baker" guy. This kind of came out of leftfield.
  8. Good point, although there is undoubtedly a team-wide problem of not getting runners in from 3rd, of not finishing off a promising start to an inning (rare as it is) by converting 2nd and 3rd w/none out into at least 2 runs. It's not just a throwaway issue solved by sabermetrics. Even our good sabermetrics guys have there problems w/RISP. To me, the two issues at hand - getting on base and "clutch" hitting - converge on one issue, being smart as a team in the approach. It seems like games are being treated as one big BP session for the hitters, and most of the starts (other than Z and Maddux) seem like the pitchers are still in Spring Training. All of this can be pinpointed in one direction IMO. If you aren't good overall, you aren't going to be good in many types of situations, clutch being one. This team's numbers with men in scoring position are almost identical to their numbers overall. Clutch is not the issue. It's only a crutch for those who refuse to look at the real problems. You can't go out and get better clutch players. You can't improve players' clutchiness. Get better hitters, and your numbers will improve. It's that simple. No need to overcomplicate things with talk of clutch.
  9. I don't get why you think it's just the Cubs. The Mets have a big Three that was highly touted and they all went down. Several teams have had great pitchers torn to shreds. The Cubs stand out because in the face of more and more evidence about abuse they ignored it and kept treating these kids like 36 year olds. It's got nothing to do with luck. It's poor decision making on the part of the Cubs.
  10. Schmidt scares me. He stunk last year. He's had serious injury issues in the past and he'll turn 34 before suiting up for his next contract. I smell Mussina here after he signs his next deal.
  11. It's not a 22 year old kid's job to pull himself from games. He is supposed to give it his all until his coach pulls him. Like a trainer in boxing the manager, pitching coach and trainer in baseball takes full responsiblity for how they use a pitcher, especially a young one.
  12. That's not good enough. It wasn't hindsight when we were up in arms over the treatment as it was happening (many predicted it would happen before Baker officially signed). You can't just say, "Well, they might have ruined him, but that's in the past, let's move on." That's incompetence.
  13. The picnic tables are getting carded left and right.
  14. Well either you hang out with a lot of racists, listen to too much rap, or for some reason are exaggerating. Or you don't know anything about me. I was just walking down the street to my favorite deli this afternoon and two kids were apparantly talking about some movie. They kept saying stuff like, "and then he lit up all them n*****, I'd have taken out that n*****. That n***** was crazy" etc, etc, etc. Probably heard the word 30 times in the 2 blocks I was walking near them.
  15. Guillen equated homosexuals and child molestors while in New York last year. Not sure about the context but Guillen did it. Link? Also, I agree with everything Rocket Sauce said. Of course you do, you're a Guillen apologist.
  16. There is a reason, if you could get great value for him. I wouldn't trade him for a scrub OF prospect. I would trade him for something that could help the lineup and rotation next year and in the future. Just because the bullpen is the least of our troubles doesn't mean you can't trade guys from that bullpen. Hendry had a ton of money freed up last year and wasted it. He sucks at signing free agents. I'd much rather take the chance that one of this trades works out.
  17. It's not that. It's Ken Williams comments that he doesn't want to play second-fiddle to the Cubs and Ozzie's "[bleep] the cubs" comments that we shouldn't trade with them. That and their rude, dumb, obnoxious fans. Who cares about whether he wants to play second fiddle or Ozzie's comments? And if we are going to stop trading with teams that have rude, dumb, obnoxious fans then we better start doing a much better job developing our own players, because there won't be any deals to make. If you refuse to deal with one team because of the reasons you stated, you are committing baseball malpractice. It would be completely irresponsible and would only be a disservice to your own team.
  18. I can't wait for Pagan to return, he's been the difference.
  19. Those other guys weren't 21, 22 and 23 years old when they were treated how Prior was treated.
  20. I would say, at this point, the unexpected future would be one that includes EPatt as the starting 2B in 2008. He's not exactly lighting it up in AA (760 OPS). Setbacks for prospects can never be considered unexpected, especially the non-elite type of prospect. I'd make moves assuming Patterson won't be good enough to earn the job. And if he makes it, that's just icing.
  21. You're not the only one that thinks he's an idiot. Wynalda is laying into Arena pretty good. What a terrible showing. I don't know anything about soccer strategy, but I don't know how anybody can be inspired by that guy. His body language is awful during the game and he just mopes around like he's waiting for his wife to finish trying on outfits.
  22. You would think "good kicker" would top the list of requirements in a soccer player. I'm no expert, but I think the powers that be in US soccer should start looking for guys who can kick better if they want to do anything in this tournament.
  23. another dead Ghanian? How long until the UN calls it genocide?
  24. These guys don't seem very good at kicking soccer balls toward the net.
