  1. Well you aren't necessarily drafting lower down if you are taking draft picks in exchange for some current salaries. Sure, you aren't going to end up with a top-3 pick because those teams aren't likely to be taking on salary. But who knows. We aren't dumping guys past their prime. Perhaps a young team that isn't quite there would take on a Barker or Versteeg in exchange for a draft pick that could end up being pretty high. If that makes any sense...
  2. With the core they already have signed long term, this team is a contender for the next several years. I'm not saying they'll have a ring for each finger, or even make the finals more than a few times. But they will be in the running. That's about all you can ask for in a capped system.
  3. Ho hum, another completely dominating performance against a good team. It's so much fun to watch. And again, I love this fourth line. Even if Fraser needs to work on his scrapping a little.
  4. Awesome. Pissed at the Blues. Their inconsistency is killing their playoff chances, and last night they couldn't even help the Hawks by keeping SJ from a few points. Losers.
  5. Just another example of the outright ridiculous nature of the politics behind boxing. This is by far the most screwed up sport in the world. It seems like it would be so easy to fix it too. One commission overlooking everything. One belt in each class. Clear lines of succession to a title shot. You know, like on Punchout.
  6. They were fortunate. But those teams that can hit the three and move into a solid zone d are going to give KU (or any team, for that matter) problems if they are not crisp with their passes and turn the ball over.
  7. Why not? Because it destroys the moronic argument that DH's are only part-time players? yeah ok....that's exactly why. Pitchers have one baseball skill they do well. They pitch. It's one of the three phases of baseball, and largely the most important, but it's still just one thing. Starting pitchers, now they do it all the time, and are counted on for the majority of the season. Relief pitchers, though? They're more of a part-time player than a DH in the game, even back in the 90s. Edgar Martinez was a more important piece of his team than players like Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith were in their times. Martinez was one of the 5-10 best hitters in the game during his time, and should be hall material based on that ability. Would you agree that it's easier to be a world class hitter when you don't have to focus on defense at all?
  8. Why not? Because it destroys the moronic argument that DH's are only part-time players? WTF? Why is that a moronic argument? They literally play about 5% of the time during a game, if that.
  9. I would never, ever vote for a DH for the hall. They are hardly even players. If Ozzie Smith can get into the hall for being world class at one baseball tool, a DH has a place in the hall. Yeah but he at least still had to hit. And he wasn't terrible at it. If you're not playing the whole game, the parts you are playing have to be devalued.
  10. I would never, ever vote for a DH for the hall. They are hardly even players.
  11. Is there any good reason why the ballots shouldn't be public?
  12. Just the latest example. God I can't stand that guy.
  13. Yes, I think if voters knew this was their one chance to vote in Alomar, he would have made it. I think a fair number of voters (easily enough to keep him out) decided not to vote for him this year, probably because of the spitting incident or just generally because they thought he was a prick.
  14. I think Alomar is HOF matrial, but not necessarily 1st ballot matrial. that's probably the one baseball cliche that drives me the most insane Me too. Either he's a HOF or he's not. Unless you want to make a separate wing in the HOF for "First Ballot HOFs" and put them on another level, it's stupid. Would you advocate a "one-and-done" voting system then? You get one try and then you're out for eternity? For a split second that sounds like a good idea, but perceptions of eras change in baseball and it affects how we view careers.
  15. I'm sure he goes in as an Expo. Or would it be a National? :-k Either way, he was my favorite player when I was a kid and this is great news.
  16. Yes, we didn't put up 10 on you. Congratulations. Missed this one but watched the highlights online. What struck me was the great scoring chances that even the fourth line was able to produce. Fraser and Eager are playing with a lot of energy. Finally get to sit down and watch a game tomorrow night.
  17. I tried to get tickets for that one but couldn't find anything reasonable. I guess we'll just have to settle for the 2/6 game in St. Louis. Haven't been to a home game in over 8 years now. That has to stop. They just make it tough for us out-of-towners with the lack of Saturday home dates. I guess the Bulls play at home on Saturdays. Also, ESPN is talking Kovi to Hawks, but it doesn't look like anything new since a few days ago. I still don't like it.
  18. Oddly, I'm unsatisfied with Turner getting the axe. It needed to happen, but as others said, it's not enough. But, I guess this starts to eliminate excuses for Lovie. He's had total control, and the more control he has gotten, the worse this team has gotten.
  19. That sounded pretty. The radio guys are making it sound like the Hawks are a step slow tonight. Will probably need a big effort the rest of the way from Niemi unless we can squeeze a few more past Giggy.
  20. Sounds like a max effort game for Buff so far.
  21. Okay, for the sake of argument, I could see picking up a guy like Kovalchuk and dumping longer term contracts like Sharp and Versteeg. But that only works if you assume the Hawks will have no interest in signing him beyond this year. Which I don't know how they could do under the cap. So, I'm still against it because it would upset the apple cart and probably not be that much of an improvement. Chemistry is very important in hockey, and I'd be worried about taking a couple forwards out and subbing in a new guy and then someone like Hendry or another guy from Rockford. If we're going to trade some of our skill guys, which I agree will have to be done after the season, it needs to be for draft picks.
  22. Buff doesn't fight much. How did it go?

    NFL Week 17

Yikes Orton. Though Johnson just made a great play on that second one.
