I'm guessing Santana was pick #1 and Carpenter was probably pick #3 or #4, with one of Morneau, Lee, or Bay being the #2 pick (just guessing) Usually pitchers like Santana go in the first round and no one else. A couple years ago guys like Santana, Schilling, and RJ would go in the first round or two, but now it's really just Santana. Most of the 2nd rate top-tier pitchers like Carpenter, Big Z, Webb, etc. usually go in the 3rd or 4th rounds, sometimes 2nd. It's nearly impossible to find a guy who is a pretty much a guaranteed lock for at least 16 wins and 230+K's and an ERA under 2.90. It's not uncommon to find guys who you can count on for 15 or so wins, a 3.00-4.00ERA and 180-200 strikeouts. When those are the best guys available, you'll likely want to boost your offense a little more, since there's a little more of an abundance to choose from, whereas there is no other pitcher quite like Johan Santana. Turnb back the clock about 3 years and then you have Schilling and RJ who are churning out Santana-esque numbers and then you got some leeway and pitchers like them would typically go in the late 1st round/early 2nd round, because people knew that if they lost out on one, they could still hold out hope of getting the other and instead draft someone like Manny, A-Rod, Vlad, etc. In other news, I have no idea why I went on this tangent. In my league. P and OF players went equally in the first round. With names like Santana, Carpenter, Zambrano, coupled with A-rod, Cabrera, and Pujouls. I nabbed Beltran and A. Ramirez in my first round. And nabbed Matsuzaka as my BEST pitcher. For me, I've got a good offense. But I have questionable pitching, but with great upside.
