    This quote in the article scares the Howry out of me. If Dempster somehow signs elsewhere the "contingency plan" had better be Derek Lowe, AJ Burnett, or get a deal done for Peavy at all costs. Signing Randy Johnson to a one year deal is not a contingency plan. No way we are going to outbid NY for Lowe or Burnett. I agree. But, assuming they get CC, they aren't going to be able to get every decent starter on the market. If they don't get CC, then yes, that makes Hendry's job a whole lot harder. I think they are going after CC and Burnett and/or Lowe. Don't forget they are getting 80 million off the books and a new stadium. They have a ton of cash to burn. Exactly. Even if they didn't have that money coming off the books, they'd still have a ton to spend. The Yankees are going to get whoever opts to accept their deals.

    Why can't they keep giving him one year deals if he'll take them? Look, I like Kerry, but if you can hold onto avaluable asset with ideal deals like that, YOU DO IT. You don't put the best team out there by making the "nice" decision.

    To me Harris sounds like a guy whose feelings are hurt. Urlacher sounds more arrogant/confident that they will step up when it matters. I guess it hasn't mattered for him yet this season.

    Yeah, emotionally this is beating me up, but logically it makes sense. The Cubs need the money to bump up the offense and the starting rotation and Marmol can close. Yeah, the bullpen isn't a sure thing, but I'd be pissed if too much money was spent there instead of where it's really needed. People will step up in the 'pen for much less money and get the job done.

    You know he has like 100 posts in like 5 years, right? I'm not saying I believe him, but he's rarely on here anyways and when he posts it's been late at night, so I'm not sure what your point is. My point? Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it. Who cares about his "history?" It's a post. Whoopedee-doo.

    The Packers' pass game is going to shred the Bears with the glut of receivers they can spread i around to. This isn't going to be pretty.

    Definitely. The bullpen is nowhere near being a disaster or even really a liability. Bullpen pitchers are typically such crapshoots anyway. The Cubs hae a bunch of cheaps guys they can plug in there...sign Wood, boom, done.

    It still sounds like someone voicing their opinion. MLB and the owners are obviously taking a hard look at the financial situation of the sport coming up given the economy, and to think they would so readily dismiss a move that would ultimately bring more money to the game and increase the value of the teams doesn't just not make any sense...it's actually anti-logic. If the quote is legit and has something to it, this sport is in trouble.

    Don't dislocate your shoulder patting yourself on the back. ;) Some of you misinterperate things. I was mostly pointing out that De Lucca is not exactly on top of things, and yeah when you share unpopular news it isn't well recieved. I want Cuban as an owner more than anyone. It's just that when someone close to the situation tellls you it aint gonna happen like they tell you there is no Santa you understand or you deny. The ESPN and Cuban talk is just spin-control. MLB will look very bad if this is proven. On another point though, other than Bruce Miles, these writers who cover baseball in this town don't know Howry! Not saying I do, but holy Howry they make this stuff up it seems half the time. Hendry told me that the only reporter he trusts with anything is Bruce Levine. Mostly because Levine has info from all of the GM's and they share. Levine has been way out in front on the Peavy stuff as the writers were poo-pooing it. Now they jump on the bandwaggon. So, in short, there's still absolutely nothing that indicates this is anything besides an MLB employee talking out of his or her ass or giving their opinion.

    Given how much the economic situation is going to hit baseball, that some of them would refuse to bring in an owner that would help them all make more money seems remarkably stupid.

    I poked fun at how he got the info, not who he is. Called that being cyncial about all big names trades after what happen in the Roberts trade discussion. So if he thought I poked fun at him, then I apologize, I meant no harm. I was trying to poked fun at how he got it. It seemed as though you addressed the situation with your usual careful consideration and research.

    Yeah, definitely. He was gone the first time around when I was barely old enough to appreciate him. He didn't set the world on fire with his 2nd go-around as a Cub, but it was cool seeing him get his 3,000th k.
