  1. They can still sign him for 2012 if they trade him.
  2. I will admit that my opinions about the song are biased. I'm off the age that my first real memories of the Cubs were watching games with my dad when they had a shot in 1984 (when I was 5) and they broke out the song right around then, so it's burned into my brain because of that. They dropped it within a few years, but I was happy to hear it back because of the personal connection.
  3. Who was saying it was a good song? If anything, you made a good point on behalf of the people arguing for it. It's supposed to be dumb and cheesy and easy to remember.
  4. I don't get your point. It's probably pretty dumb.
  5. I would assume Baker would get most of the starts. If they want to hold on to him I'm sure they'd like to see if he can improve his hitting against RH pitchers (doubtful).
  6. But neither were really top prospects. Sneaky's point is that guys with pedigrees that have surpassed their results so far, and are young enough to still be in/entering their primes are the inefficiency. Ah, gotcha.
  7. Older, yes, but weren't both effectively considered productive platoon/utility guys at best before they became full time starting 2B for the Cubs?
  8. Don't forget Carlos Quentin. I don't think the WSox gave up much for him and he's raking. This is one thing that Kenny Williams does extremely well (Quentin, Humber, Thornton). Obviously there are other examples as well (Josh Hamilton, Bobby Abreu--although I think he was an int'l signing, not a draftee). We tried it and got a few years of terribleness from Thomas Diamond. Thanks Hendry! Todd Walker, Mark DeRosa.
  9. I wouldn't be opposed to signing Ethier, but part of the reason I prefer Kemp is that he's younger. He'd be, what, 28 if he started the 2013 season with the Cubs? I think Ethier would be 31. Kemp's defense isn't something to ignore, and ultimately I'd prefer him to end up in LF.
  10. Why even go as far back as Bradley and Patterson? You've got tons of complaints from last year and this year about how "it looks like they don't care." Meatballs gonna meatball.
  11. Why pass on someone like Wilson? Sign him after this year and then use the money freed up by Demp and Z after 2012 to snag at least one of the guys on that list (plus Kemp. ALWAYS KEMP).
  12. Hah! This is serious? Because of course it is.
  13. Yeah! We're only 18 games under .500 now! (Rolls eyes) http://www.deathvalleymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Kicked-in-the-Nads.jpg http://www.deathvalleymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Kicked-in-the-Nads.jpg http://www.deathvalleymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Kicked-in-the-Nads.jpg http://www.deathvalleymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Kicked-in-the-Nads.jpg http://www.deathvalleymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Kicked-in-the-Nads.jpg
  14. I could see a team signing Marshall to be their closer, but they're not going to pay him like a top shelf closer. Just like they wouldn't give us closer value in a trade either. Right, that's why I said "decent money." I could definitely see teams lining up to sign him if the Cubs let him go, but he's not gonna get closer money.
  15. Marshall isn't one of those guys. Neither is Baker. Neither is Barney. So who else has he commented on?
  16. There's magic in the ivy and the old scoreboard The same one I stared at as a kid keeping score In a world full of greed, I could never want more Than someday we'll go all the way Granted, it doesn't flow perfectly, but the next line finishes the sentence. How is that a sentence? Yeah, that makes it even more nonsensical. If he said "than to someday go all the way," OK, but "in a world full of greed, I could never want more than someday we'll go all the way" is a "sentence" that even makes hccf cry foul.

  18. So you don't think any team would want him to be their closer if he continues his current production through next season? Probably not. Most teams don't sink decent money into a reliever that isn't already tagged as a closer to be their new closer.
  19. I mean, I get that he's saying that he's being "greedy" in that he wants the scoreboard to be filled with Cubs hits and runs, but man...that's a tortuous lyric.

  21. Marshall is getting over $3 million this year because his 2-year deal is backloaded, so it's not like he's making over $6 million over the course of it; the total is about $4.3 million. Thornton got the money he got because of his previous 3 seasons with the Sox (he was better than Marshall) and because he was signed with the intention of making him the closer.
