Rosenthal's entire reputation pretty much hinges on this type of stuff, so I have to think it was a pretty good source who told him that.

I don't think the Cubs will go that high. But then again, I'm not sure if any of four teams will. All four teams have pretty smart front offices.

His pitch mix changed a good bit in Oakland. The worst case is that happened to help prevent injury, so going back to what made him effective before will lead to a DL stint or even arm surgery. The best case is that coming back to the NL, Bosio, and more usage of hard stuff that breaks(2 seamer/slider/cutter) brings him back to his Cubs levels without missing a beat. More likely, I think you can hope for him to pitch at a 2-3 win pace, maybe on the lower end if he isn't able to go 180+ IP, but with the possibility that 2014 Cubs Hammel shows up to offer some ceiling. He bombed in his first four starts in Oakland and then was fairly solid after that.

I think he does. I recall reading an article after he was traded where somebody commented how highly Hammel spoke of Bosio.

Is it a swing and a miss if we opt to sign Scherzer instead of Lester? How about if Theo gets Amaro drunk enough to deal Hamels for something reasonable? Of course it's not. So relax and wait to see how it all plays out. It's not a swing and a miss unless we go into Opening Day without having made the upgrades. Resist the urge to feel like our offseason hinges on one guy, because it doesn't. I think deep down we all know those two possibilities are pretty unlikely.

Yes, please. Maybe Valbuena and a B prospect gets it done. I'd prefer holding off on trading Valbuena until we know whether Bryant can actually play third base.

I'm not saying that so much as that there are more pressing areas to target via trade, and to expend trade resources on. Would Donaldson have been a boon to the team? For sure, but there are far more glaring weaknesses to address. I am chomping at the bit for the Cubs to make a meaningful move, but at the same time I'm not going to get bent out of shape every time another team adds a player that the Cubs could have gotten and made fit, just because. Now if SP, OF and catchers start moving for prices the Cubs could have bested, then I'll get a lot more angsty. Why does it have to be for one of those positions? If you trade for Donaldson, you've essentially gained an outfielder since Bryant now has nowhere else to play. Catchers shouldn't cost that much. As for SP, [expletive] pitchers. -

Why do you think they have to blow everyone out of the water rather than just being the highest bidder? Because there are more and more indications that going back to Boston is his first choice. I don't want the Cubs to be used as nothing more than leverage to raise the price on Boston and then, when the price is right, the Cubs aren't given an opportunity to counter. I'd rather the Cubs simply make an offer that the Red Sox won't match.

Realistically, it's looking more and more like the Cubs will essentially get one good offer out of this. If they really want him, I feel like they're going to have blow everyone out of the water and offer $180 million or something close to it.

The rumors all along have been $150+ million, so I have trouble believing they would waste everybody's time by offering $110-$120 million. If Boston gets the sense that Boston is where he truly wants to be, they'll wait to see what the Cubs offer and then decide whether they want to match it or not. Kind of like how Anibal Sanchez used the Cubs.

So, using two years worth of splits vs RHP: Montero .728 OPS, Castillo .696. From an offensive perspective, you're either counting on an aging catcher returning to levels of production unseen for him in several years or a very marginal upgrade vs right handed pitchers for a platoon. I understand the defensive difference and why that might drive the decision, but I don't understand why you keep painting Montero as a somewhat ideal platoon partner for Welington. 8th highest OBP during that time though, and a few of those guys aren't even catchers anymore.
