  1. If the Cubs were going to clean house, they should have gotten rid of Pierre and Ramirez at the deadline. That would have made the prospect haul they received significantly more than if they clean house this winter.
  2. Letting Ramirez walk is not an option in my opinion. When Hendry didn't move him at the deadline for prospects, that indicated to me that he was going to re-negotiate his deal. Losing Ramirez's production without getting anything in return (especially given the Cubs inability to spend the left-over dollars wisely) would be suicide.
  3. If I were Jim Hendry, the first thing I would do is fire myself. That would be a good start.
  4. One way I can see this contract benefitting the Astros is that it may just have raised the bar on what Zito is going to command that it will be out of St. Louis' price range. Maybe they are overpaying Oswalt a little, but if that extra money spent helps keep Zito in the AL (probably with Boston or New York), it could be beneficial to the Astros in the long run.
  5. I didn't get a chance to see tonight's game and am just browsing through the box score now. Does MLB have it right that Dusty make a double switch in the bottom of the seventh and took out his leading hitter (Barrett - .314) when the game was tied? How can someone do that with as anemic of an offense as they Cubs have displayed this season? Does anyone on the coaching staff have any common sense?
  6. I have no confidence in this organization to be able to "buy" the right players to win a championship.
  7. Can someone enlighten me of why the Cubs weren't interested in Abreu? I tune into FOX today to see Abreu hitting 3rd in the best lineup in baseball. Somehow, I think the offensively challenged Cubs could have found a spot for him in our lineup.
  8. It's about 3 and a half years too late for that.
  9. If you could go back in time knowing what you know now, as a fan would you still "let their be light" at Wrigley Field? I am kind of torn on this issue. I get to watch many more games now than if there were no night baseball. But, on the other hand, some of my fondest memories of childhood were rushing home after school to catch the last few innings. Seeing the shadows creep across the diamond as Lee Smith began his long, slow walk in from the bullpen was something that I enjoyed greatly. Anyone feel passionately about this, one way or the other?
  10. I hope your wife doesn't find out you are blaming your marriage on Bartman.
  11. Stupid coaching staff still made the final decision. Shouldn't let a player who has never been seriously injured and doesn't know how his body would respond with his wrist not at 100% make the decision. If the player says he's good to go and doctors can't find anything structurally wrong, you can fault the team for letting him play. Until D-Lee swung the bat, you don't know how his wrist would respond. I was there in the Wednesday game when Lee homered his first week back. It was obvious that he wasn't 100% healthy. Most, if not all, fans could see that he wasn't ready to be in a major league game. How our coaching staff/front office was unable to reach this conclusion for three additional weeks boggles the mind.
  12. I sent him a question similar to this. No other options? Perez is 14th on the Cubs in OBP (of guys with 75+ at bats), yet Dusty continues to hit him second at least 3 times a week. In fact, in Minnesota, he had Perez hitting 2nd and Walker hitting 8th. Under no circumstances should Perez ever hit above 7th in any lineup. How do you explain Baker's insistence on using Perez and his .266 OBP at the top of the lineup?
  13. Followup question, then (not specifically for you): If Dusty's bad strategy is the problem, why do most of the posters here keep suggesting managers known for the same type of strategic blunders? Some people just want a change because the current situation isn't working... Other people want change because the manager can't (or refuses to) fill out a lineup card correctly manage the pitching staff effectively utilize young players in situations best suited to their talents hold players accountable for terrible fundamental play understand the importance of getting on base drill the pitching staff of the importance of throwing strikes and pitching to contact etc etc etc
  14. An easy rule to remember - Never make the first or third out at third base. I learned that when I was 8. Could someone please pass that memo on to Aramis Ramirez?
  15. Capuano 23 straight scoreless innings versus the Cubs. I sure can't wait until we get the book on this guy. Then, he's ours.
  16. Do we ever use the same lineup in multiple games? I understand that today we are facing a tough lefty (Capuano) and last night we faced a tough righty (Oswalt). But, going back to Tuesday night (Pettite), only the top 4 guys in the lineup are the same (including Perez). It just seems that our coaching staff is just throwing garbage against the wall to see what sticks without any real plan or idea. Shouldn't they have a better idea of their personnel and have settled into a typical lineup by now? Is that too much to ask of a major league baseball team?
  17. Maybe we aren't thinking outside the box enough on this A-Rod thing. If the Yankees are looking for outfielders and don't think Jones is good enough, let's go get a better outfielder and then spin him to the Yankees. I know I got eaten up before for my Ramirez for Abreu deal but what if we sent Ramirez to the Phillies for Abreu and then turned around and dealt Abreu to the Yankees (with whatever other players it takes) for A-Rod.
  18. If you don't trust Hendry to rebuild and gather the proper prospects necessary to help the Cubs down the road, then he needs to be gone. The strategic plan shouldn't change because you can't trust the people in charge to execute it. If this is the case, the leadership needs to go.
  19. Maybe Abreu isn't the guy to seek in a trade involving Ramirez, but I'm sick of watching Ramirez put forth a half-ass effort (like today when he was jogging on the way to first on the ball off the wall). Changes need to be made on this ballclub and I'd start with the guys not putting forth effort. Time and time again, Ramirez is that guy. Down the road, with a manager that stays on his butt all of the time, he's going to be an all-star again. But that ain't going to happen with Dusty and his hands off approach.
  20. The announcers are pretty fair. The actually care about Zambrano and his well-being. Announcer - "here comes Todd Walker" Analyst - "thank god. Anybody but Zambrano" And I'm pretty sure they were saying this as in Zambrano could blow out his arm if he continues to pitch 120+ per outing, not thank god he's out so we can get to their bullpen.
  21. My favorite comments from the Brew Crew's announcers That's the kind of poor fundamental play that has killed the Cubs this season. And (insert announcer's name), it has been their veterans that have been responsible today. (After Zambrano leads off the bottom of the seventh with a hit)...I guess pitch counts don't apply to Zambrano as he leads off the seventh despite throwing 104 pitches already. Neifi Perez to the plate (bottom of the seventh), turns around to hit lefty. His average just dropped 100 points (Perez predictably pops out on the infield). Just some examples of things they have said that indicate they know more about the Cubs than MacPhail/Hendry/Dusty. How can two run of the mill announcers have a better read on this team (in watching the Cubs play all of 5 or 6 times) than the Cubs GM, manager, coaches, etc? I find it absolutely amazing that these guys have pinpointed some of the (many) Cubs ailments but no one that is employed by the Chicago National League Ball Club can identify any problems.
  22. Oh my god, no. I never had considered the repercussions of how this could get Neifi in the lineup even more. Can I go back in time 10 minutes and rescind this trade proposal?
  23. If I have to listen to the Brewers announcers, I wish it was Uecker and not these guys. They make "watching paint dry" seem exciting compared this game.
  24. Both players appear to be stuck in a rut with their current team and could benefit from a change of scenery. Maybe the Cubs could throw in Hill or a young reliever if the Phillies felt they needed more out of the deal. My whole thought process on this is that I feel Ramirez has regressed to where he was at the end of his tenure with the Pirates (non chalant, lazy play). Ramirez is a guy that needs a manager who is always riding him to ensure that his effort stays high. Obviously, Baker is not that guy. Plus, Abreu gets on base at a much greater clip than Ramirez. What's everyone else think?
