  1. No, just sadness for me. . . How about we don't write the season off and instead start directing hostilites at Johnnie B. Jr., the Cardinals, and White Sox Definitely - b/c its Baker's fault that Lee got hurt. Perhaps the injuries haven't been Baker's fault. However, poor decisions made in trying to adjust to those injuries are. But I won't go into those mistakes here. Lots of other threads about those here and elsewhere.
  2. So your allegiance to a team is based on whether or not they're going to be good? Personally, I love MLB EI for more reasons than just the Cubs. I almost cancelled my Extra Innings package but I didn't. To that I added satellite radio, so I could listen to games even when I couldn't watch. No regrets. I still love baseball as a game, so I will always watch baseball. I'll still wear my Cubs hat and stuff when I go to local college or semi pro games. NoI am not ashamed of being a Cubs fan. I have a great deal of respect for the personal qualities of many of the players, especially Maddux. I just..... Well I'll tell you what it is; I still remember 2003. I just haven't gotten over that. I just so much want the Cubbies to win I can't stand it. Say what about that other first baseman called Lee, the one that plays for Tampa? Ah well, I can dream can't I? Sorry for the rant folks.
  3. Nothing personal, but I am getting just a bit tired of hearing that. Meh. I publicly announce I am switching loyalties to the Blue Jays.
  4. Don't worry. Dusty won't talk about it either. (j/k)
  5. Welcome to the boards. I haven't posted much. I sort of got "flamed out" over at one of the other boards. That doesn't happen here. Let's see, there's you from New Orleans, crazy Vance in Monroe, and myself in Shreveport. Say, if there's anyone from Lake Charles around here, we have the whole state covered.
  6. So what makes you think the Cubs are going to be needing a new manager?  My choice: Manager. Maddux is smart. He would do well with either job, but the weakest link appears to be at the Manager's position.
  7. I agree with this sentiment. I read Conseco's book, and listened to the congressional hearings. From these new revelations, along with others, it appears that much of what Conseco wrote was true, and much what what was said at the hearings was lies. The truth, always.
  8. Aside from the added injury risk, I've always been intriqued with Carlos getting some ph at bats. Z can flat out mash, with the only drawback being his high strike out rate (which, if put in a different situation, I think he'd curtail). He also scares the hell out of me everytime he slides into base. It sure would be something to see though. He scares the hell out of me period. Wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley. :P
  9. Have many of you seen this article in the Tribune today? I didn't realize there had been that many mangers. That's probably due to my own ignorance. There have been a lot of managerial changes in the last 20 years, haven't there? Have any of the changes had an effect that lasted beyond one season? Would firing Baker make any difference for next year? I just don't know. If it is true, as I have read here, that Baker's was Hendry's pick, and that Hendry is the real problem, then perhaps they should keep Baker until his contract runs out, because only then will the owners get embarrassed enough to get rid of both Baker and Hendry.
  10.   I guess I am kind of slow.
  11. Hmm....I would agree. They lack heart. For about the last 30 years I have been in higher education. I also, when I was younger, coached youth sports through the local YMCA. One thing I have learned is to trust my "gut feeling." Some would call that way of knowing the "still small voice". Others might be more religious and refer to it as the voice of the spirit. Regardless, I could always tell , from this gut feeling, when a class would turn out fairly well, or when a team I coached was gong to win. Last June the 16th, right before the start of the series with the Yankees, I just got this bad feeling. I mean really bad. I can't explain it, but I know what I felt. Talk about a downer. Maybe I was psychic or something. Anyway I stopped watching the games. I had spent all the money for Extra Innings and digital cable, but I just stopped watching the games. I have always checked the box scores, and read some of the posts at various forums, but I just stopped watching the games. I feel better physically, But I still grieve. I almost watched the game tonight. But there was this storm which shut down cable TV. This just isn't right. I know teams can't win all of the time. But this is different. They just don't [censor mode] cuddling[/censor mode] care. They ought to be ashamed. But they aren't. Excuse the rant folks. I am new here and shouldn't have vented so much. But I believe you folks understand. 8)
  12. Hmm.... I read the article about Baker's cancer. From the information in that article, and my own experience as a cancer survivor, I would say Baker has beaten that one. So the person who wrote that hate filled note is ignorant about how often cancer can be cured as well as being a jerk. Ah well, my dad once told me that 90% of the people I would have to deal with would turn out to be SOBs; I think he may have had the percentage about right. And to Serena, thanks for the welcome. I have been a lurker here for a long time. Seems to be a lot of good folks and lively discussions here. When the season's over, and I have had a chance to calm down some more, I'll share why I left another discussion board; and no, it wasn't associated with Cubs.com. Let's just leave it at that.
  13. If you think that article was really something, wait until you see the one in the latest issue of SI. My copy came Friday. They give a lot of play to Baker's son (the human shield) Darren. It's because of stupid articles such as that one, along with other reasons, I am not renewing my subscription.
