  1. No big boys drawn together. Also will be the second time Liverpool has played Brighton this year (won at Brighton 2-1 in the Carling Cup).
  2. I don't believe that's true, at all. If Manning is healthy the Colts will retain him. He, however, is not likely at all to be healthy by March 8, so they're not going to retain him. I don't know. With all the holes they have do they really want to commit $28 million to a QB who may have 3-4 more years left, or use that money to sign some good FA's and just stick with Luck through his growing pains? When that quarterback is (a healthy) Peyton Manning, yes. A million times yes. He's worth well more than $28 million. The Colts had these same holes -- perhaps less than they do now -- the year before and won 10 games, hosted a playoff game, and, if the new kickoff rules were in effect, would have won that playoff game. Every team has holes -- New England was thirty-first in total defense, the Giants twenty-seventh, the Packers thirty-second, and New Orleans twenty-fourth. You simply do not discard a healthy Peyton Manning for "the future." Things change way, way too fast in the NFL to take such things for granted. And, as far as the cap hit goes, this year the Colts used, roughly, 16.5 percent of the cap on quarterbacks; next year, Manning/Luck/scrub would use about 18 percent of the cap.

  4. Seems like a really good hire. I'm quite pleased, again. Arians' was QB coach for the Colts in Peyton Manning's first three years. Of course, this is a bit odd since the Colts still have/had an offensive coordinator, Clyde Christensen. Christensen is evidently going to be demoted back to WR coach for the Colts or end up with the Bears as QB coach.
  5. Dirk Kuyt with a late goal as Liverpool beat Man United 2-1 in the FA Cup. So, a week after being dominated by Bolton, Liverpool knocks Man City out of the Carling Cup and Man United out of the FA Cup in a four-day span.
  6. I'd posit that's because they make very little sense and are almost irrational. Allowances for not remembering perfectly, but when Wisconsin took their first lead of the second half at around nine minutes left, and the crowd woke up, my guess is that probably every other coach in the Big Ten calls a timeout (especially those coaching teams that seem to be a bit mentally weak, especially on the road, and lack a point guard to settle things down). Heck, Penn State called a timeout in the game at Bloomington on Sunday when IU opened the second half with two straight baskets. Oh well. Edit: As to your other post, I like Abell quite a bit and believe he deserves more playing time. I wondered during the last two games why he wasn't playing at all.
  7. Yes, I also should have mentioned Remy Abell's treatment. Abell had not played at all the last two games -- and only two minutes the game before -- yet he is the correct substitution, as a freshman, with four minutes left in a close road game?* Perplexing. *Note: This is not meant to be in any way derogatory to Abell. He seems like a nice player with a lot of a potential. He's also shown an ability to take, and make, some shots that show some "onions" for a freshman.
  8. Ron Zook? C'mon now. Crean completely failed at game theory last night (if Zeller doesn't foul out, then he was not played enough). Zeller should have been in the game at the under-4 timeout, roughly, and having him at the scorer's bench ready to check in and pulling him back with (approximately) one and one-half minutes left was foolish. However, unfortunately, this conservative style coaching is rather epidemic across sports. Crean will never be confused with Bob Knight; but he's still above average-ish. A closer approximation of Zook's coaching, ahem, acumen would be Mike Davis (who, unlike Zook, couldn't even recruit well).
  9. I was sitting next to some Marquette fans at a bar last night and all they could talk about watching the game was how happy they were that Crean wasn't their coach anymore. Marquette: 2012: 17-4 (Pomeroy No. 19) 2011: 22-15 (9-9) (Sweet 16) (No. 32) 2010: 22-10 (11-7) (First Round) (No. 33) 2009: 25-10 (12-6) (Second Round) (No. 19) 2008: 25-10 (11-7) (Second Round) (No. 11) 2007: 24-10 (10-6) (First Round) (No. 38) 2006: 20-10 (10-6 Big East) (First Round) (No. 28) 2005: 19-12 (7-9) (NIT) (No. 93) 2004: 19-12 (8-8) (NIT) (No. 80) 2003: 27-5 (14-2) (Final Four) (No. 16) 2002: 26-7 (13-3) (First Round) (N/A) 2001: 15-14 (9-7) 2000: 15-14 (8-8 CUSA) (NIT) Well, I suppose if you squint the right way, Marquette is better off without Crean.
  10. I despise playing at Wisconsin. I don't think I'm the only Big Ten fan with that sentiment.
  11. so i guess they are going 3-4, then. That's certainly an interesting question. Obviously, you hire a 3-4 coach you expect to play a 3-4. However, the Colts do not have the personnel -- not even remotely -- to play a 3-4. A transition to 3-4 may seem likely, but it's surely going to be a slow(ish) one. I'm expecting mainly 4-3 for next year, at least. At his press conference today, Pagano said he wouldn't fit square pegs into round holes and would not force a move towards a Baltimore-style defense. He said he might use both 3-4 and 4-3 looks; but also mentioned that if Mario Williams can play OLB in a 3-4, then Dwight Freeney (I'm dubious here) and Robert Mathis potentially could as well.
  12. Yeah, this makes little sense to me. It would be like me -- a white dude -- not wanting to play in Seattle or Denver.
  13. Colts hire Chuck Pagano, formerly the defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7503273/chuck-pagano-hired-indianapolis-colts-coach It's, of course, a crap-shoot with assistant coaches becoming head coaches, but I am pleased. And he can't help but be an upgrade over Jim Caldwell, who was utterly clueless and one of the worst head coaches in the (modern era, at least) history of the NFL.
  14. Craig Bellamy with a late-ish goal against his previous team, Manchester City, to secure a 2-2 draw and advance Liverpool to the Carling Cup final against Cardiff (for which Steve Gerrard's cousin plays). Not the most important of cups, but it would be nice to win something.
  15. After the initial shock, this was my first rational thought. The Fielder move is surely a win-now move -- goodness, they must know that the deal is going to be really bad at the end -- so jumping in for Garza seems to make a lot of sense. Not really. They are already positioned to win now, at the very least their division. If anything this deal is more of a reason to keep their own prospects so in 3-4 years they will have affordable players to fill in for the aging fatties. We're assuming foresight of long-term planning for a team that just myopically gave a 5-ish WAR designated hitter $23.8 million a year (citing bukie, 2:53 p.m., 1-24-12)? I can't help but read this as anything but a Grossman-esque "eff-it, I'm going deep" move.

  17. I strongly wanted the Cubs to make a play for Fielder . . . but not at that price. That's outlandish. I'm completely shocked he got that deal.
  18. This. At least Tom Brady is a great quarterback who belongs in the discussion. Eli -- who I like and hope wins -- is not even remotely in this discussion.
  19. Really? I find I think at least one player is a incredible douche on every team I root for every year. I'm pretty good at compartmentalizing these things, so it very rarely is overly bothersome.
  20. Also he is an idiot kicker Ha ha, that comment was awesome and hilarious. And only blamed Vanderjagt for being drunk and an idiot, instead of what I would have been tempted to say: "our idiot kicker -- that choked another playoff field goal costing our team a game -- got liquored up and ran his mouth."
  21. Then he should have said "I", rather than "we". He very likely was implying that his O-Line and backs failed to understand the calls he was making. Sure, we can pick at these nits if you want. In a perfect public-relations world, maybe he should have said "I"; but,at the same time, he said "we" not "the offensive line" or "the idiot linemen" or something. And I disagree quite a bit that he was implying what you say, much less that it's "very likely." I think he was saying he made poor reads, the offensive line blocked poorly, he did a poor job feeling the pressure and throwing the ball quicker, etc., etc. Football is a team game; the collective "we" win and lose together.
  22. How is this persuasive? This isn't his first rodeo. He's not a moron. No ones arguing that. He is consistent in making this sort of statement. Contrast that with Peyton, who has his moments, but just as frequently implies or directly assigns blame to others. Favre did/does the same thing. The point is that Brady is on par in terms of celebrity with Peyton and Favre, but he, IMO, is easily the most humble (at least publicly). In terms of his intensity and demanding nature, it plays out in how Brady communicates with the players and coaches in the lockeroom and on the sideline (rather than through the press). That's fine with me. People with good leadership skills do that all the time. Working very hard and expecting the same of your teammates isn't a bad thing. That's crap. People say that because he said "we had some protection problems" in the playoff loss to the Steelers in 2006-06 -- but forget to note, he makes the protection reads and calls.
  23. My goal would be to have homecourt advantage in the first round and win a playoff series (obviously the latter is more important). That would be very good progress for this team. Oh, I suppose I should add that they aren't embarrassed in the second round (if the second round was something like last year's first round against the Bulls I would be quite happy). In a way, I think the Hawks are an apt comparison. The Pacers look like a team that probably peaks at 50ish wins and second round playoff losses. However, they don't have a Joe Johnson-level contract and therefore have more cap space*. This is a subjective opinion, but they also seem a more likable team than the Hawks (the Hawks are a bad word for NBA fans, but I don't t hink that's only because of their ceiling). *As CCP said, in the NBA, they'll be held back by their market. A super star free agent is almost certainly never going to sign in Indianapolis. Because of that, the Pacers best bet is to build a deep quality team like they have now. That's the best a market like Indianapolis can hope for without lucking into being bad, winning the lottery, and having that year come in a very specific year when a superstar is available.
  24. Yeah certainly, and Roy Hibbert, wow. Thoroughly outplaying Bynum with a broken nose was beyond impressive. He should make the All-Star team. Also, love when Granger plays D, and he's returning to that this year after an extensive layoff. Yeah, it's been a really fun year so far. Pacers are quite enjoyable to watch, lots of good players, but no super star. Also thrilled for Roy Hibbert; I've been probably the biggest proponent of Hibbert since he was drafted. Nice to see him doing well -- and, selfishly, proving me right, ha.
  25. Colts still have as many wins against teams that finished with a winning record as the Patriots.
