  1. Isn't Bob Kravitz a dope? Yes. He's a huge dope. I have no idea what makes Kravitz think Izzo would leave Michigan State for Indiana. Doesn't make any sense at all. Kravitz is the guy that suggested JohnCalipari (after saying IU shouldn't hire anyone with any taint whatsoever of being unethical after Sampson) and Paul Hewitt (one winning season at 9-7 in the ACC in eight years), among others. He's a huge dope and Izzo seems about as unrealistic as you could get. I don't think I believe IU can't afford Miller's buyout. I've read that, but a donor ponied up $550,000 to make Sampson go away; the university is also apparently willing to go at least to $2.5 million per year for a coach. Finally, Sampson was hired the Wednesday before the Final Four two years ago, so I'd expect Thursday to be a reasonable deadline.
  2. Not cool. I've known A.J. for eight years now. All his family looks like that.
  3. UNLV was a No. 7 last year. Yeah, my bad. I just picked a 10-seed to beat them last year (couldn't decide between UNLV and Georgia Tech; should've gone with the coaching). Nice research above, thanks. Knew there couldn't have been many easier seed paths. Also, my bad on saying MSU had a good chance. They are getting dominated and look awful
  4. I think they have a very good chance. Hope I'm right.
  5. I'm not too surprised Davidson won. They beat Georgetown, who, in a lot of ways, is just a superior Wisconsin. Plus, Curry was the best player on the floor. However, I'm stunned they dismantled the Badgers like that. Two straight tournament losses to 10-seeds for Wisconsin. If Kansas makes the Final Four, they will have beaten a 16, 8, 12 and 10 (obviously Davidson isn't a typical 10). Perhaps, seed-wise, the easiest path ever (off the top of my head). Curry is absurd. Great player. I wish IU would've used Gordon similarly; Davidson does a good job of getting Curry open, Gordon had to get his points all on his own. Oh well.
  6. [-X Seriously, during the Davis era every opposing fan attempted to convince me he wasn't that bad and IU should give him another year. This happened every year. Ahh, that happened in Lavin's last few years. In fact, when it was obvious Lavin was done in that painful last season, Arizona fans would call in to LA sports talk radio pretending to be Bruins fans and try to prop up and defend Lavin. USC fans were doing that a bit with Dorrell last fall. Yeah, Davis, Lavin and Dorrell were great. If you were a Purdue, Arizona or USC fan.
  7. You do realize the reason Pearl feel off the face of the Earth was because he made it public hat a recruit told him he was choosing a different school because they offered him money and new SUV. I would say he doesn't like cheaters. Yeah, that's the whole story. He didn't tape conversations without permission, didn't bait a high schooler into making incriminating statements, didn't splice different conversations together, etc. Nope. Didn't do any of that.

  9. Be interesting to see if IU went with their 3rd straight minority hire. I don't think Purnell is that good of a coach though. I am certain IU would have no problem with a third straight minority hire. However, I'm not really sure what candidate is viable. The closest might be Anthony Grant, but I don't see him as much of a candidate for various reasons. Nor do I think he should be. Great post, CCP. I agree with everything you said. I simply quoted the Pearl part to reduce clutter and to agree that I don't want Pearl because of mainly ancillary reasons. I do think his offensive style is a concern and not something that would go over well with the IU fan base. And, again, I've seen his teams play in person a TON over the years. I like Pearl a lot and will always root for him, however (anathema to Illinois fans, I know).
  10. I'd prefer Miller to Bennett, but yeah, they are my 1 and 1a. Nobody else is even close. I prefer Bennett, but those are 1 and 1a for me too. I'd be ecstatic with either.
  11. 1. Tennessee's simply not a better program than Indiana. Tennessee has had three good years in a row. They've been better than IU the past three years, but it's just three years. The Indiana job is much more desirable. 2. I don't believe Pearl is a direction IU will go. He's close to a pariah in the Big Ten, among other things. 3. Alford isn't going to happen. He and Greenspan evidently don't get along at all. Even if they did, it's not happening. 4. I have no problem with a different style for Indiana, but Tennessee's is not a style I'd want. Up-tempo is great, but Pearl's style of "controlled chaos" is basically just chaos offensively. I've seen a lot of Pearl since his USI days and his teams simply do not take good shots.
  12. Four out of four last night; though none of the results were surprising. I could potentially get three more right tonight, but I kind of doubt it. Something unexpected has to happen. While I agree that UNC has looked dominating, Louisville was sloppy and beat arguably the best No. 2 seed by 19 points (UNC beat a No. 4 by 21). Louisville also decimated Boise State and Oklahoma. While I picked Louisville over UNC, the Tar Heels have to be the favorites. Still, the Cards are really good and matchup pretty well with UNC. I expect a great game.
  13. Ohio State v. Florida for another college championship!!!!
  14. Isiah Thomas or Jim Harrick to IU?? =P~ There's a lot of talk that Tony Bennett is the favorite for IU. There is also a LOT of Pitino to IU chatter, as well. While I don't really believe that Rick Pitino will end up at Indiana, that certainly has been the majority of the scuttlebutt over the past week or so here. I can say that IU's administration not only seems adamant on a big name type coach, but some seem very proud of themselves as if it's just a matter of time. I have concerns because I don't believe them, nor do I trust their opinion of what constitutes a "big name." I like Tony Bennett a lot. Isiah Thomas is a big name. While I'm not concerned about Thomas actually getting the job, I'm still concerned about this big name obsession. Because, you're right, Thomas is certainly a big name. Someone was on ESPN (NBA analyst) said that Thomas just sat on the bench the whole game and has basically quit. I wouldn't want a guy like that near my school no matter what the name is. Plus the guy ruined two NBA franchises and the entrie CBA. He was a hell of a player, but is horrible at running a team or program. Add to that the sexual harassment which is worse than a few phone calls. As incompetent as I think IU's administration has been recently, I'm not concerned at all about Thomas being in the coaching hunt. I am concerned about other names I'd prefer to steer clear of.

  16. If Pitino would leave Louisville for IU he should be given the job immediately without interviewing anybody else. I was at Kentucky when he came in and cleaned up a mess much worse than IU is facing in no time at all. Then he got Louisville back to an elite level, even though it may have taken a little longer than it took him at Kentucky. He's exactly the fix for a broken program. Problem with that is Indiana athletics can't afford Pitino. That's not true anymore. It was true two years ago, but it is unequivocally not this time around. IU is pouring money into its athletic department with a new basketball practice facility, new baseball and softball facilities and enclosing the north end of the football stadium. The football team made more money this year, went to a bowl, IU's not paying any former coaches or AD's as in the past, Bill Lynch is extremely cheap, they paid only $200,000 to Sampson (the rest was picked up by a donor), and the Big Ten Network has been a huge financial boom for all schools involved. They can afford Pitino, without much question. Still, I doubt it happens.
  17. You think Kent gets canned this offseason? Braun started out well at Cal and had heck of a reputation nationally. Then they just started going backwards. He's had some pretty decent talent out there. He's really unpopular with the big donor alums who have clout. It sounded like a forgone conclusion before they swept the Arizona schools to make the tourney but I still think he's gone with their new big arena opening. They'll probably try to grab Mark Few. I think Cal will get Mike Montgomery. I'd guess he's really unpopular since he's a terrible coach. He's made two Elite Eights, I know, but he's not a good coach. Braun, however, is a good coach but things just didn't work out that well.
  18. I think he's a bit too much West coast, especially with his recruiting connections. He'd probably be most successful staying in the Pac-10. I'm a big fan of Montgomery's. However, besides the west coast connections, he's 61 years old. He's a very good coach but IU should go a different direction.
  19. Not for a championship-caliber team. I'm not going to go to the trouble of finding the stats because it's not worth my time, but that's just plain wrong. Why? He's a poor defender who doesn't hit right-handed pitching very well. He's a fine platoon guy or fourth OF, but no good team should want him getting 600 at bats. Because it's basically a guarantee that worse players have started on championship teams, even at the corner outfield positions. It probably happened very recently, too.

  21. The baseball-style approach has always been my preference for basketball, as well. The one-year rule is a sham perpetuated by the NBA upon college basketball. It makes a mockery of college athletics. If a player is prepared to jump straight from high school, let him. If a player goes to college, he should go to college as a student-athlete (and I'm not naive about this sort of thing, I'm actually more cynical than most. The NCAA just shouldn't sanction non student-athletes is all.).
  22. Maybe they ranked them by most recognizable names. Williams, Calipari, and Huggins are mediocre coaches. The first 2 just get great talent. Huggins is a great motivator. My top 5 would be Howland, Ryan, Miller, Bennett, Izzo. Is that the Sean Miller that used to play at Pitt? Yes. Thanks. Do any of you remember when he was on Johnny Carson as a 3 or 4 year old and showed off his dribbling skills? No, but I believe I may have seen clips. When he was three or four I wasn't even a sparkle in my father's eye.
  23. I agree with this. I've actually argued both sides of this argument. Wisconsin has much, much more talent than people realize or are willing to admit. This current version has two five-star, five four-star, and four three-star players. That's quite a bit of talent. Bo Ryan is not winning with five scrubby white guys he found at the YMCA. However, his teams are always among the most fundamentally sound, disciplined teams in the nation. He's not winning with a ton of NBA talent, but he has talent. He's worlds better than some of those coaches ahead of him though.

  25. Bo Ryan at No. 9? That's just, well, completely asinine. This is all ambiguous I know, but Rick Barnes (especially, there are others I take exception too as well) ahead of Ryan is unbelievable. There aren't eight coaches in the nation better than Ryan, much less of the teams left.
