  1. Harvey needs to have an amazing game tomorrow night...I'll be there :D Have been meaning to get to a game all year, but with Kerry in town (for 2 Innings, even better) it was too good to pass up. I've been wanting to see Harvey mainly, but also guys like Patterson and Gallagher... *wishes Alberto Garcia was healthy*
  2. All three are having (statistically) their worst year in a LONG TIME. Not fair comparison, IMO. Sosa's career IsoP is .264, almost .100 higher than Walkers. Helton's is .270. Beltran's is .203....really you can't put Walker in this category until he at least gets it over .200, which all of them AVERAGE over their careers. Walker's IsoP for his career is .150...it's only been over .200 twice...both when he was with the Rockies...*gasp* Once again, you pick out a guy like Patterson who's having his worst year of his career to compare him with. Patterson's is .166 for his career, so if you want to point that out as at least being comparible, that's fine. But don't use the stats of clearly superior power hitters (not referring to Corey, rather the previous 3) in down years for comparisons sake, it's unfair to them and it's misleading.
  3. I wonder if the O's saw the writing on the wall, and that's why they failed to make any moves at the deadline. Or it could have to do with the fact that no one was selling for anything less than the moon...and the Cubs made the biggest move by acquiring a career .270 hitter with bad defense, okay speed and power...who's getting paid 7.5 mil this season...
  4. He was always a gap hitter in the minors, someone who took a lot of walks. However, the Indians needed some thunder, so he became more of a free swinger, striking out more, walking less, and hitting a few HRs. (Still only 22 HRs that year) I don't think he was a steroid user, but just looking at his HR #s would possibly indicate usage. There was a story that someone posted in the thread about his trade (when we got him).
  5. Nice to see Mark Reed have a good game... Please stay hot Harvey...at least through Tuesday when I can come watch you...
  6. I thought about mentioning the possibility of bringing up Corey to man CF. Hairston doesn't accomplish much unless he's used as a leadoff hitter. Lawton will be our new leadoff hitter, so Hairston's really redundant. We could put Corey's defense back in CF, and just let him hit 7th for the rest of the year.
  7. Lawton LF Murton RF Lee 1b Burnitz CF Ramirez 3b Walker 2b Nomar SS Barrett C (Switch defensive spots for Lawton/Murton if ya want, and switch Murton/Nomar order-wise, also, if you feel the need)
  8. Infante
  9. Ryan Harvey went 3-3...up to .273...he's sizzling. If he finishes the season above .280, does that change anyone's opinion on him?
  10. Players who hustle just seem to make things happen. Murton hits a roller to 3rd that maybe Aramis/whoever wouldn't exactly run out, but Murton is hustling his *you know what* off and the fielder rushes his throw, putting Murton on 1st. Any type of ground ball, run your absolute hardest. Ramirez hits what should be a double play to possibly the best defensive SS of the 90's against the Giants...he boots it. Anything's possible, folks. Give 100% on every play, every day, and things will begin to go your way. Have to make your own breaks... *I'm done with cliches, resume your normal reading routines*
  11. Just to be fair, Murton does have some true thunder...watched him today in BP (i know, it's only BP) but he hit a bomb onto waveland and even took 1 or 2 out to right field. Like I said, he's got power potential, although it might not show up until he needs to put it to use (ie if he's used in a run producing role down the line)
  12. These two other guys I know also set aside their power in order to get on base: Wade Boggs and Ichiro Suzuki. Imagine that, players who have the ability to hit for power, but want to be better all-around players, so they cut down on their swing in order to do what they can to get on base...
  13. As opposed to Murton's .156, Dubois' .189 is hardly a significant upgrade, especially considering that Murton strikes out less, is a much better athlete, has potential to steal bases, and hit for a high average. Dubois relied on his power and power only. Murton K's about 10 less times every 100 ABs...(at least according to minor league #s) I'll take a .300/.365/.450 hitter in LF who can hit 15-20 HRs, swipe 15-20 bags, and take a decent amount of walks...he'd be an ideal #2 hitter, especially with his small ball skills. Say Murton continues to progress and gets his IsoP over .180 by next year, does that then mean he may be a legit threat, power wise? Or does he still need to improve it to over .200?? Personally, if the guy can hit .300/.360 with 20 SB and 15 HR, he can be my (speedier) Mark Grace for the next decade.
  14. Also, for comparison, Jason Dubois (considered to have good-great raw power) hit 15 in 443 ABs in AA West Tenn...the same guy who hit 31 in less than 40 ABs last year in AAA. The same guy who had 20 HR in 361 ABs in '02, and 24 in 443 ABs in '01... Banged up or not, Dubois also struggled with power in that stadium. He also had 13 last year at High A ball, so he's got power, it's just got a little ways to go before he starts hitting them regularly. I'm going to go out on a ledge and call a HR from Murton tomorrow (facing Halsey) just so the people concerned about his supposed "lack of power" will shut up  *I'll be at the game again today, I'd love to see Murton play...and we have bleacher tix too...gonna have fun with this...
  15. Matt Murton is a very solid hitter for average, and he was probably on pace for about 15 HRs this year, or around there. 15 HRs in a pitcher friendly league (in AA, or any level of the minors) isn't bad. Generally, players develop power as they get older. Sosa didn't start hitting HRs (don't bring up steroids...) until he was 24 (hit 33) but his highest total in the minors was 11 in 519 ABs...he's 5th on the all time list. Lee had very good power numbers in the minors, but he also went up from 4.2 HRs per 100 ABs in the minors to 4.6 in the majors (prior to this year)... In over 1000 ABs in the minors, Raffy hit 28 HRs...he's had 28 HRs in almost all of his prime years. Plus, he hit 26 when he was 26, 22 at the age of 27...and he finally broke the 30 mark (37) when he hit the age of 28. Oh, also keep in mind the fact that Murton has won HR contests in the past, and also is said to keep pace with Sing/Pie in batting practice longball....so it's not like he's a weakling. He may just swing for base hits, because *gasp*, sometimes those are just as effective, and much easier to obtain.
  16. Like it was already said, Hendry seems to go for his guy rather than the popular choice. He wanted Ramirez over Lowell (plus Florida got hot and didn't need to deal him then) and he took Nomar over Cabrera (despite the fact that everyone assumed we'd get Cabrera because we needed a leadoff hitter) Whether or not he can pull off a deal in such a weak market this year, that's another question. However, if he does get a player, look for the guys like Kearns or Pena...both are young, underachieving, very talented players who could benefit from a change of scenery and/or a playoff race. I'd love to see a guy like Huff (career .290+ hitter with 25 HRs and 100 RBI) or Dunn (perennial HR leader potential) or even a Griffey (having a great year, and can still go get 'em in CF)....but I'd definately settle for just some flat out consistancy in LF. If they feel Murton's got enough talent to get the job done, great, let him play (personally I love the kid). If they think an upgrade is needed, GO GET ONE. However, don't yank Murton/Holla around and keep each of them in a role they shouldn't be in...
  17. IDK, but I sure would like to get at least ONE decent positional prospect out of this draft, and right now he seems like our best bet.
  18. I would still love for Kearns to be a Cub come July 31st...the kid's only 25 and he's very gifted. He's shown ability to play well at the big league level already, too.
  19. LMAO...hilarious abuck...and dead on. I love how ANY problem our players have nowadays is automatically a psychological issue and they need time to "straighten out" or "get their head on straight"....it'd be completely far-fetched to believe that a player may have a true problem he has NO CONTROL over...
  20. I believe he is, and I believe he was last year, was he not? This year would be much more of a concern, IMO. If he plays well at AA to finish the season, there's no reason he SHOULDN'T be protected.
  21. Right now, we know we can get at least .260 with below average pop from Hollandsworth in LF, along with pretty solid defense. We can get very good defense from Gerut. We *may* have a .300 hitter in Murton who takes a good amount of walks. Basically, we need either a BIG bat (Dunn...Kearns when he's on) or to just stand pat and give Murton more of a shot. The offensive production out of Murton/Holla wouldn't be as big of an issue if we had Nomar hitting 6th and playing well, then you can have Barrett 7th and Murton 8th, leaving us with a very solid lineup. However, taking Holla out of the lineup leaves just Walker and Burnitz as the only every-day LHs in our lineup.
  22. Go Philly, Bravos, Pirates and Rocks...
  23. A team that's 4.5 games out of the wildcard with over 60 games left...should not be sellers. We're 1.5 out of 2nd in the wildcard. That's not too far off folks. A few wins strung together, we're in a great position to make a run. This team should NEVER be sellers unless they are well under .500 heading into July. We don't need the money...the only reason to sell is to play the kids, but right now Dusty's here anyway, so we won't get that accomplished even if we do sell. We'll have 60+ games of Macias in RF with Holla in LF...that would be exciting.
  24. Williams gets the job done. It might not be pretty, but he does good enough to WIN games. Williams has started 5 games, got 3 wins, and has a 4.15 ERA as a Cub. I'll take a starter that wins 60% of the games he starts...if he only gets 30 starts, thats 18 wins :o If he gets 35 starts, thats 21 wins. Of course there's no way I expect him to do that with a 4.15 ERA over a full season, but as long as he gets the W, he pitched good enough to win, and thats all you can ask for out of a "5th starter". He's got as many wins as Wood, in 5 less starts than Wood.
  25. Could very well be. Hopefully it wasn't injury, because that's the last thing we need is another starter going down, even if it is only a AAA guy. He's been involved in tons of rumored deals, so it could very well be a deal is in place involving Wellemeyer, and with Iowa taking an early lead, they might have just wanted to play it safe. Actually I guess that doesn't make much sense...they had a 2-0 lead and he gave up the HR making it 2-1, why would they pull him after that inning? Maybe Phil Norton needed innings...
