So you're totally behind him if he's both stupid and a liar, but not if he's just a liar. Got it. Hey, if he's in on the whole thing he deserves everything he's got coming. But lying about details of a physical relationship with a girl he thought died of cancer and lying about the girl entirely are a lot different on the scale or moral awfulness. Based on the timeline, he was lying about the nature of their relationship before the whole death thing. Yeah, with the giant assumption that was he was naively duped, only because he was embarrassed that he only knew the girl online and over the phone.

Fabricating details of a physical relationship because you're embarrassed about your e-girlfriend to your parents and probably teammates is quite far removed from being complicit in a massive public relations hoax. You're missing the point - by making up parts of the story and letting that go viral, he was complicit in a massive public relations hoax. He WAS the author of parts of this story. Well yes that would be complicity. Except that the Manti as naively duped theory is predicated on the notion that he didn't know he was being duped until December. Doesn't matter. He was spreading his portion of the lies well before that. If nothing else, he certainly didn't stand up and correct anyone on any details. He went along with everything reported in the media and never corrected them about any of it. In other words, he was complicit in the hoax. There is no path here that leaves him completely innocent and naive. He lied and fabricated part of the story that became famous. It's only how big a liar he is that is in question. Um, I would say it does matter if he really believed that his presumptive girlfriend died of cancer or not.

I think that's more or less clear by now. That jrahz and ceee21 or whatever were joking about out her as Lennay because they knew Tuiasasopo was behind it. The question now becomes whether you think Tuiasasopo being behind the account makes it more or less likely that Te'o was in on it.

So it's simpler to: A. assume that an NFL prospect kills off a fake gf (rather than admitting to his family that he lied and then telling his teammates they broke up) and risks ruining his career rather than B. Te'o is one of a bunch of people that have fallen victim to these scams. It's possible that A is right. I don't think that's more likely nor simpler. Again, what about the stuff like his story about how they met? Do you think he decided to make that up on his own or did the Catfishes tell him to use that story? Are we talking Stanford 2009? Stanford 2009: te'o and a woman exchange numbers --unclear if any contact-- sometime in 2011: woman contacts te'o claiming to be woman he gave his number to. ...bunch of [expletive] happens leading to today... that seems pretty logically consistent. Or the entire Stanford 2009 thing was concocted by Te'o because he was embarrassed about only knowing "her" online. It's still consistent.

I was gonna submit that Tuiasosopo had a falling out with Te'o more than a year ago and decided to get some revenge...but obviously that doesn't jive with Te'o promoting the guy's music on twitter and hanging out with him. Good breakdown though.

I said this earlier but why would a long distance girlfriend, fake or otherwise, preclude him from banging chicks in South Bend? Would you be shocked if Tebow wasn't a virgin in college too? you know what i mean. he literally could have had anyone in like a 4 state radius be an actual girlfriend but yeah he totally fell for this dead fake girlfriend he'd only touched on the hand once. its preposterous Could've been some Samoan thing. Or an excuse to tell all the local tail that he's just having fun because his real girlfriend is miles away. But as far as I'm concerned, the whole thing hinges on who was operating that fake online identity. If it's the Tuiasasopo guy like Deadspin suggests, then Te'o was definitely in on it to some degree.

right. which is why we know that, at the very least, te'o was lying about something. i mean, he said he met her FACE TO FACE. unless they found an actress to play the role who also happened to look very much like the girl whose facebook photo they later stole, TE'O LIED ABOUT THIS. are you at least willing to admit that, MR? Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuup. You've got ND saying he never lied about anything when you've got multiple parts of this that require him to be lying for the story to make any kind of sense. ND/Swarbrick said that Te'o was the victim not that he never lied about anything (e.g. faking a physical relationship with someone he only knew online). I think Teo being duped is plausible although the connection to Tuiasosopo makes it unlikely IMO.

I raised a huge eyebrow when Swarbrick said his information said that Tuiasosopo fellow wasn't operating the fake identity. That'll be easily confirmed if true.
