  1. My guess is that this year would easily be the lowest of the 3. Hell, I could see them getting away with 4 for this year. Just to keep payroll at whatever limit they had set, since next year they're losing alot of cash off the books.
  2. Wade was and always will be inside of Lebron's shadow on the national stage. It should have been a much larger story than it was and I hate to say it: But people just didn't care enough on the whole, for it to be a bigger story.
  3. I don't think that Lebron ever had any intention of playing anywhere other than Miami. I think that those 3 had that plan layed out for a couple of years, in all likelihood. I think that the FA crap was just a show for each of their egos. To show them how much they were needed throughout the NBA. On a side note, has anyone ever heard anything about the documentary Wade was doing during this process? Did it get shelved due to everyone hating on how everything went down? I would have loved to see all the fake acting about him mulling over Chicago and New York.
  4. I think the difference between 18 and 23 is huge in this situation. I think 3/18 would be a bigtime bargain and a deal we should sign off on immediately. On the other hand, 3/23 isn't bad. It's definitely possible that it could be a bargain over going year to year with him over the same time period. On the other hand, I don't think it'e enough of a bargain to justify giving him 3 years at this point. An injury, wildness issues, loss of confidence, whatever......These things can and do happen to closers all the time. Carlos is elite, no question. But, he's also human and if one of those things happen to him, then this contract won't look all that great pretty quickly.
  5. Very true. I just meant that Lebrin can't use the "they didn't build me a team" excuse as easily as others can in most situations, since they DID listen to him on the moves they made.
  6. And he's got a really, really, really good chance to win at least one while he's in Miami. And really, is it LeBron's fault that Cleveland constructed such a horrible team around him? If anything, their poor play just makes me understand better and even sympathize with why he wanted out. Didn't they ask him for his thoughts on most of their acquisitions though? They gave him what he wanted to work with basically? At least I thought that was the case. See, I thought it was usually more of an issue of him going "I want this guy or this type of guy" and then them coming back and being like "well, we we couldn't get you the puppy you wanted so we got you this really awesome gerbil instead." Yeah, I'm pretty sure he was wanting Stoudemire, but settled for Jamison, as the one obvious example. I do remember him being very happy about getting Jamison though.

  8. Should have been the best rotation any of us had or will ever see in Cubs uni's.
  9. For whoever it was that was asking about The Jordan Rules, I thought it was pretty good. i didn't think it even painted Mike in all that bad of a light either. I can't stand Lebron and Mike is, was, and always will be my favorite athlete of all time. That said, the one advantage Mike had over ANYONE playing today was the lack of technology he had around him at the time when he played. The reporters kept quiet too on most things pertaining to him. It's not like he had to worry about showing up on twitter, youtube, facebook, or the internet as a whole until the end of his career. putting a thousand in a strippers panties or gambling a mill on a shot sitting down on the sideline(which supposedly happened more than once). It's just different times and in al likelihood, he would have adapted to however he would have needed to, but the fact remains that he didn't have to. The bottom line for me though, is this: I just can't picture Mike(in his prime) losing. There's no one else, in ANY(even Tiger) sport, that I can say that about.
  10. Obama didn't even know a single player on the team. :-)
  11. Yeah, I remember thinking at the time that this could be one of those "Dusty ruins another one" type situations. Guess it was.
  12. Can't argue that at all. Didn't like the pricetag of prospects we gave up to get Garza would be my only issue, but even that was dealing from a position of strength inside the system, which is partly what it's needed for to begin with.
  13. I've been as negative as anyone on Ricketts so far. But, he's evidently given Wilken the OK to spend "significantly more" on the draft this year, as well as more on Int FA's as well. This seems like it's coming to fruition right now too, since we signed two Cubans for 1.7 mill and also gave Szczur 1.4 mill(plus the 100,000 he already had received obviously) to give up football. It was also said that Wilken basically is given final say-so on how good the draft is and they spend accordingly. Which at least does make sense. I was certainly vocal in thinking that they needed to spend more money last year and stand by that. But, in the end, if Wilken spent what he wanted and got the talent he wanted in the process, then it's definitely above me to question his talent evaluations. This upcoming draft and IFA period WILL tell us quite a bit about Ricketts true intentions though: He said that the overall baseball payroll wouldn't change from where it was last year, it'd just be reallocated towards scouting and player development. So, if we (hopefully) have an extra 3-4 mill to spend on the draft and then again on IFA, he's speaking the truth. And also will appear to the kind of owner we need as well, to build this team into a true perennial threat.
  14. I enjoyed AZ Phil's stuff in the past, but I do really see him on TCR anymore. Where do you find his stuff? Thanks. You have to sift through the comments on each article and sometimes he'll post stuff inside them. It's pretty tedious though, because sifting through all the other comments isn't very fun, when he's literally the only one you want or need to read. My guess is he'll have more articles up soon though, with ST starting now. With the total lack of minor league interest over there(other than those here who ask him questions, for the most part) I wish there was a way to get him to come here and post.
  15. If you look at it like he'd get close to 5 this offseason, then probably 8-9 next year, if he has a decent season in 2012, that'd leave 2013 as his first true FA year and he'd command over 10 mill per for sure. If he signs a 3 year deal for 18 mill or so, that's a tremendous bargain.
  16. By the way, I think the smartest thing we can do this year, if we're on a fixed budget for this upcoming draft, (even if it's quite a bit higher than last year's budget) would be to give our 1st rounder a major league deal. That way, not only can we give him a large bonus, we can spread it out so it won't affect this year's budget nearly as much. Example: Bubba Starling is sitting there at 9 for us. Instead of giving him a 4 mill bonus, give him a major league contract if it's a college player(or in this case(HS), a Zach Lee contract, which wasn't a major league deal) for 6 years and 6 mill or something like that. That way, you're getting the BPA and also saving money on this year's budget that allows you that much more to go spend on overslots, in what may be the last year it's possible to truly put a stamp on your system very quickly, if you want to spend the cash to do it.
  17. I read today that the possible changes to the draft include fixed slotting(which we've heard before) or possibly allowing smaller market teams MORE of an overall budget for the draft than major market teams. No idea how this would work or what constitutes small vs. large market teams either. The possibility of a "world draft" will be brought up again too. I don't like the idea of hard slotting, because that means you're almost definitely losing guys like Zach Lee last year or guys like Bradley and Starling this year to football. I don't like the small vs. large market thing at all, but I could get on board with an overall team budget for a draft based on previous year's record, maybe some sort of formula that calculates the previous year's spending as well somehow, along with comp picks weighted to where if a team loses a player. They aren't technically getting punished for it, if they were good last year and also takes into account any potential money left over from the previous year's budget. I don't think a world draft is truly a possibility, but I guess I'd be up for hearing how anyone thinks this could work?
  18. Byrd's contract is totally tradeable. I've thought about this one a little bit and I've come up with 2 deals I'd do, to get Young.(NTC's get waived both ways here) I'd send Soriano, DeWitt, and Dolis to the Rangers for Young. No monies exchanged other than Cubs send Rangers 8 mill in last year of Soriano's deal. Other deal I'd do is Byrd, Silva, and Grabow for Young. 4 mill coming to the Cubs in 2012. More of an NBA type bad contract type deal in a way. Rangers have no use for Silva or Grabow, but maybe they want out of Young so bad, they'd look at them as potential depth for a season. Do the Rangers do either of these? I wouldn't, because I'd just keep Young personally and make him understand he's just a part of a team and he needs to do what's best for everyone involved. But, who knows? They may think they have to get rid of him and maybe other teams don't want to take on as much of his contract as what we're offering in this. If the Rangers have no interest in either of these scenarios, then I have no interest in Young, if I'm the Cubs.
  19. For as much crap as the Cubs have put us through, either being non factors or breaking our hearts and the Bears being non factors most of the time as well, what the Bulls gave us with Mike made up for it, as far as I'm concerned. The older you get, the more you appreciate what you're watching, I guess. I was 10 when the Bears won it all, so I certainly enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as I would have if they had done it recently. The Bulls were winning during my college years and shortly after. Way easier to appreciate at that stage. And the funny thing about it was that I never worried about them. Mike was going to win. Never a doubt in my mind. Not a chance anyone ever comes close to him as far as being my favorite athlete of all time.
  20. Looks like the Chargers will franchise V-Jax as well. And since he'll get about 10 mill(up from 3.2 last year) for the 2011 season, it's not likely he's going to make a big deal out of it.
  21. What I can't stand is that Goodell is making it out like it's the fans that want an 18 game schedule. Which just doesn't appear to be the case from any poll I've seen anyway. He should just admit that it's his biggest agenda and not the fans or anyone else's. Just another huge payday for the owners really.
  22. I think Pujols is riskier than Fielder personally. But, I also acknowledge the payoff is much bigger as well. At least for the next 4-5 years anyway. After that, it basically becomes pick your poison: Prince's weight issues in his early 30's or Albert's elbow in his late 30's?
  23. To me, the owners already look fairly bad here. When the union made their proposal for a split of revenue at 49/51 and establishing their ceiling in the process, the owners got up and walked out. Instead of countering and giving everyone an idea of how much work there is to be done. To me, it already shows the owners as bullies, since they have the ability to withstand a workstoppage better than the union does. There's not a reason to respond in that way, if they truly want to see things get done quickly.
  24. Sloan just signed a one year extension on MONDAY. To resign 3 days later is almost proof that something crazy happened between then. My guess is it did have something to do with Williams. And for Utah to listen to him over their longtime coach is probably stupid, since I doubt he sticks around once his contract is up.
