  1. Penalty will be announced before Thanksgiving, months before he Cubs are out of the penalty box. We don't even know if they'll be under IFA restrictions or not. Assuming he/they are, there's very few teams with money to spend. They could easily wait until July.
  2. Starting to sound promising here too.....
  3. Very interesting. Puts another guy on the market. No idea if he'll wait til the next class, take a smaller bonus from the Twins, or what..... I gotta wonder if the Twins did this to give them a slight shot at Ohtani.
  4. I'd be okay with it, tbh. I'd make some different choices after Cobb, but I think that still puts us as favorites in the division. I'm sure they'd make some additions at mid-season. It really, really makes me wish we had moved on Verlander, though. Regarding Verlander, I already don't remember: Did we not make a move for him, or did we not have any sort of prospects to get him? They wanted Happ or Javy evidently.
  5. Mooney just brought up Mikolas if we sign Cobb too.
  6. Injuries happen, I don't think there'll be issues finding AB's, to be honest. That said, I'm pulling for a trade.
  7. these are jesse rogers's opinions (as opposed to him reporting who tomorrow's starting pitcher is, which he can at least sort of do) so the correct way to look at them is to expect the opposite to be true Either way, its a very lackluster off season, in my mind. The main point was, what if that IS our off season? Its not beyond the realm of possibility, with no trades and looking towards the 2018 class.
  8. Jesse Rogers' article today saddened me quite a bit. Obviously, Rogers isn't great. But, it still made me think.... His off season expectations seem to be that Schwarber definitely is at the low end of his value and we're not selling low on him. He doesn't think Happ will bring back the young cost controlled type we'd want for him. And he just doesn't see us moving Addy or Javy, for that pitching. So, he expects us to add Cobb. But, then sees the 5th starter as a guy like Buchholz, Miles Mikolas, or bringing Lackey back. Minor would be our Brett Cecil type of acquisition, then finding a closer, which he didn't really get into options on. So, if we add Cobb, to go with Mikolas, Buchholz, or Lackey, for the rotation..... Minor, to go with one of Morrow, Nicasio, Shaw, or Kintzler(taken from another article as guys we think can close) for the pen..... With nominal other pieces...... 1) Are you OK with that off season? 2) Does that team likely enter the season projected to win the division?
  9. Toonster, you literally just took every possible positive look at one guy and the opposite on the other. Being in sales, I appreciate that. But, GM's just aren't looking at it like that. Soler was older, under a contract, injury prone, had struggled some, and was a liability defensively. And I'm not picking at things. Those are facts.
  10. Soler needed to completely mash, to just be a 2 WAR guy. Injuries and his defense had cut his value way down. Happ has tons more value than he did, or does going forward.
  11. If you part those guys out....I'd say Odorizzi probably brings back a borderline top 100 type, plus a top 30 in a normal system. I'd say Colome brings back a top 100 guy, plus a top 10-15 in the system. Kiermaier? My guess is he'd bring back a top 20 prospect, a top 75ish guy, another guy from the top 10 of a system, and probably a top 30 guy too. Obviously, I'm guessing here. But, the sheer numbers should show that they're just much better off parting those guys into separate deals, than to put them into one.
  12. I did. But, he wasn't throwing tons of pitches, if I remember. Plus, he's still gotta pass a physical, my guess is we'd leave no stone unturned on it. I'm figuring he's the best potential closer, on the market. Years and stuff too, he just seems a better option than Reed. I like Nicasio better than Morrow by a decent bit. I like Morrow's stuff more than Nicasio. But, the main reason I like Morrow, cis that I think it'll be POSSIBLE to get him on a two year deal. His health still scares me, if he gets 3 years, my interest level drops some. But again, his stuff is just nasty. I'd love to grab Britton and have Morrow for the 8th for a year, before giving him the closers job. In the end, if we don't trade for a reliever......I want two guys from this group. Morrow, Shaw, Reed, Cishek, Neshek, McGee, Minor, and Nicasio.
  13. I did. But, he wasn't throwing tons of pitches, if I remember. Plus, he's still gotta pass a physical, my guess is we'd leave no stone unturned on it. I'm figuring he's the best potential closer, on the market. Years and stuff too, he just seems a better option than Reed.
  14. If you get Britton, I think I'd be off McGee. You'd have Wilson and Monty as lefties, with Britton too. Grab Morrow and another Righty at that stage. Unless we have reverse split guys, which I don't remember.
  15. I guess I forgot he got hurt/wasn’t as good last year. I wonder if like Caritini and Zas would be enough if Moran was all it was going to take? They don't need Caratini, unless they're moving him off C. But, I could see him and Hatch, with an upside type 3rd piece. Maybe Assad. At any rate, even if it took Alzolay, I'd be completely fine with it.
  16. Britton makes perfect sense for us. He's on a one year deal and falls off the books in time for the 2018 class. Pair him with Morrow and you've got your 2018 closer groomed and ready to take over. The package didn't seem that bad, when Houston almost dealt for him last year. Collin Moran was the lead piece, not even a consensus top 100 guy. And now, he's got less control too.
  17. I think Jake signs in February, after a perceived contender loses a front line guy.
  18. Yeah, Rogers threw out a "bet money on it" lol. Nightengale is just flat out horrible.
  19. http://www.bleachernation.com/2017/11/13/report-cubs-topped-the-luxury-tax-limit-again-which-would-have-offseason-consequences/ According to Nightingale, we went over the LT in 2017. I don't see how and he's an idiot anyway. If we did, I'd say we'd be likely to stay under this season. But, I really don't think we went over. MLBTR says the teams that went over were the Dodgers, Yankees, Nationals, Giants, and Tigers. So, Nightingale has us and the Red Sox, and not the Nationals. I think MLBTR is correct. If we ARE in the LT, it means we lose our 2nd and 5th rounders for signing a QO player and it'd mean we lose a million, instead of 500,000 in IFA money.
  20. Beltran is retiring......
  21. I'm starting to think it'd take 2 of them, if you're actually going to convince Tampa or Toronto to deal Archer or Stroman.
  22. Gd right The last one is exciting. I don’t particularly buy into the non-Bryant/Rizzo/Contreras group and am excited by what the FO might land (coughStromanandOsunacough). I like those 2. I also want horsefeathering Neshek lol.
  23. 4th or 5th round pick.(5th, I think) Big power, had some hamstring issues during his HS season in Puerto Rico last year, so underperformed a bit. Healthy now, seems like we got a steal. Was over slotted, slot was 285k and we gave him 400k.
  24. A few general thoughts, from articles heading into the GM meetings, from Gordo, Mooney, and Levine.... We were mentioned on Morrow and McGee again. We supposedly have between 65-75 mill to spend. (Assuming arb guys included there) Seems like less spending this year, to open up next years checkbook Cobb mentioned as a guy we could sign very early, so we head into the Winter Meetings in a strengthier position for trading. One or TWO of our position player group could be dealt.
  25. http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/2018-chicago-cubs-top-10-prospects/?amphtml=1 Interesting list from BA.... Ademan, Alzolay, Albertos, Caratini, Lange, de la Cruz, Little, Hatch, Tseng, and Velázquez.
