    I think we all expected this, obviously not exciting. I hope we get an option year, it'd help when we deal him midseason. We're at 40, which may be the most interesting item about this transaction. Who gets moved off the 40 man? My guess is we'll try and send Marshall thru waivers.

    Damnit. That's what we should have done this year. Not to mention, if our idea is to trade away space this year, my guess is that's out the window now. No one else is going to need space, if the Yankees spend that much.

    Looks like he thinks Black can still be a starter. Has four pitches, the only question is the durability. I agree with Law. Keep Black in the rotation as long as he continues to show plus stuff. The guy at Bleachernation had an interesting piece the other day on Black's change of approach after coming over to the Cubs. http://www.bleachernation.com/2014/01/28/prospects-progress-corey-black/ This addresses the theory that the Cubs are acquiring undervalued pitching prospects because of their size. I wonder if part of that theory is the front office isn't necessarily looking for a guy who can throw 220 innings for 15 years, but would be quite happy to get guys who can throw 190 innings for 5 years. If you can get that sort of performance out of undersized pitchers, you will essentially use up all of their cost effective years, and then let the doctors, pitcher and/or another team figure out how he'll make due during his late 20s/early 30s. I like the idea, but isn't it kind of a "needle in a haystack" thing, trying to find undersized starters to begin with? Or are there more out there than I'm thinking? RHP's, not lefties, as it does seem to me they may be a bit more abundant anyway.....

    6th round pick out of Pepperdine this year. Large frame, excellent stuff, hasn't gotten control yet. More of a thrower than a pitcher. Had first round ability, just not the results.

    Yeah, but that doesn't really tell us anything. De La Rosa, Malave, Acosta, most of our recent high priced signings come over for that.

    I think that Castro would bring us an interesting package right now. Interesting being the operative word there obviously. I think we could get a package of (from our own system as an equivalent) of Pierce Johnson, Jeimer Candelario, and Paul Blackburn. No, that's not enough to make me consider trading him, but if he puts up a 3-4 WAR type year again? I could see that package turning into the equivalent of one elite prospect(top 25), and a pair of top 100's to go along with it. Again, as I mentioned earlier, I'd want that package to have THAT value, just including at least one guy you'd be able to put into your rotation or lineup immediately.

    I don't put much hope into him as a starter, but I think he's got a solid shot at being a back end of the pen arm. And having DJ around him isn't going to hurt his chances either. If he can lengthen out his arm action a bit, maybe at the expense of a couple of MPH, who knows? Starting isn't completely off the table for him. At any rate, as a 4th piece in a Garza rental, he was an excellent get. He'll be in my top 20.

    I think everything depends on if Javy CAN stick at SS myself. If he can, I feel very confident that 1B and 3B will be settled headed into 2014. Between Olt, KB, and Villanueva, I think we're going to be just fine at 3B. That leaves 2B as the only true question, in my opinion. If Javy looks good at SS, then I guess you weigh what you can get in trade for Castro versus what you can get for Alcantara and maybe Vogelbach, as a package. If the packages are close, then you'd need to decide if you think Alcantara is going to provide you with close to the same production as what you feel you're safely going to get out of Starlin. One way or the other though, if Starlin bounces back AND Alcantara continues on his current path, it's likely one or the other is gone by Opening Day 2014, in my mind. Unless Javy really takes a step backwards, which I don't see happening.

    Violent delivery, Texas had tinkered with it a few times. Has had at least two shoulder issues. One a few years ago and one last year. Has had a hard time controlling anything other than his FB for long stretches.

    I don't think you can trade Starlin for strictly minor leaguers. If he bounces back, you've got to get back a major league starter(if really young, its OK if he's struggled some obviously) that has frontline ability, plus minor leaguers. Or you could trade him as part of a package for something elite. Position be damned. Teams that have a SS need are the Yanks, Rays(longterm anyway), Twins, Angels(longterm), Marlins, Mets, Phillies(longterm), Reds, Pirates, and Giants.

    Don't get me wrong, this IS it for Olt, just as last year was for Brett. Either he'll have carved out a major league role or he'll be off our prospect list by this time next year. But the talent dictates him being given this chance.

    It's more plausible to believe Olt has a shot than Brett did.(says guy who believed in both) It's more plausible to believe a guy can come back from sight/brain problems that really aren't even diagnosed or have a known cure than it is for a guy to improve off of some mechanical adjustments? Sure, if you believe the articles that it was a tear duct issue and that drops cure them. I'm more willing to believe in a concussion related problem taking hold during a season and getting fixed afterwards, than in something basically every guru said had no chance of working. Which is how everyone had diagnosed Brett's swing.

    I know the guy has stuff, but Alberto Cabrera has had 90 good innings at Daytona in 2010 and was solid in his THIRD and FOURTH seasons in AA. His control has sucked out loud in his two major league stints. Yeah, he's got some talent, but at some point, you need to produce. At 25 years old and needing to make the team, since he's got no options left, I think he's an ex-Cub soon. Likely to be passed thru about 10 different claiming teams hands, before landing somewhere.

    In order, I voted for Olt, Vizcaino, and Hendricks, with Blackburn on deck. With the voting from last time though, it looks like quite a few have changed their minds on Hendricks. I thought it was going to be pretty set with the next 3, in the order I had them. That said, these next 4, I'm basically OK with them in any order honestly.

    One, we certainly had access to his medicals. Two, we probably want someone we deem an "innings eater", I can't see us looking at him that way currently. Personally, I think Hendricks will have a better major league line than Baker at the end of the year.

    If Toronto is actually looking for TWO SP at this point, which has been mentioned, I could see this getting serious. Their system IS pitching-heavy and they have two protected picks in this upcoming draft to replenish from, if they do decide to make a trade. Shark comes at a good price point for them as well, as his salary isn't all that high, which could allow them to still pursue Ubaldo or Santana as well. That said, my guess is AA called Theo, the price hasn't changed, and there's nothing more to the rumor.

    You like Hammel? I just don't see it with him. Rather have Maholm. I don't LIKE him, but if Bosio can get his GB rate back to where it used to be, I think he's got a better chance to get us something decent at the deadline than Maholm likely will.
