While I agree with both you and Meph that Baseball Between the Numbers has its flaws (I'm only about halfway through it), it doesn't seem that you read the article very carefully. They use Bonds as an example to lead into their overall analysis, but the data they use to conclude that protection has no effect on performance is based on every player in baseball over an entire season.

It has? I'd like to see the source of this, as the few articles I've read that claim to prove this were so specious and riddled with flawed logic it's laughable. But you may be referring to a different study than the ones I've seen, in which case I'd be interested in seeing them. The best info I'm aware of (and I'm not aware of much, to be honest; I'm not as well versed in baseball statistics as some others here) comes from Baseball Between the Numbers. I unfortunately don't have a link, because I read it in a book, but the authors are all BP guys, so I'm sure their info is on the web somewhere. I didn't consider the logic of the analysis too deeply, but it seemed sound to me at first. If not, I'd love to hear why.

i'd actually take a job with the cards and then run them into the ground. it might get me fired, but my cub fan friends sure would appreciate the effort. I would go this route as well. I probably would too, but only because running an organization into the ground would give me about as good a chance of being hired by the Cubs.

If you bat him 8th he will never see a pitch to hit and you will destroy any confidence he has. 7th is debatable depending on who is 8th. Plus you will be wasting his speed down that far. This isn't really true. Lineup "protection" has been shown to have no real effect on a player's performance. Secondly, if the pitcher does nibble around the zone, it will help Pie improve his plate discipline.

I agree that Pie needs to play at least for a good while, if he's on the team. However, I don't agree that leadoff is better than 7th or 8th. Giving the most PAs on the team to a huge question mark who can't hit lefties even when he's going good and has less-than-perfect plate discipline is not a good idea. Leave him at the bottom of the order where he does less damage if he sucks and feels less pressure to "catalyze the lineup" or whatever nonsense they throw at him.

Maybe it will drive the O's asking price down? Or better yet, maybe it will make Hendry just not want him. Trading for Roberts in anything but a steal of a trade is a misallocation of resources. Focus on a good starting pitcher and a shortstop.

If he's actually as good as those metrics say he is, I'd bring him in - I'd still cringe every time he came up to bat, though, but it'd be an upgrade over Theriot, who isn't good offensively OR defensively. I'd probably explore trading Pie or someone for a good SS first, though - I'm all about targeting Greene, as has been mentioned.

I'm not happy about Prior leaving either (I have, after all, retained my handle this whole time), but I still cracked a smile at the use of the phrase "damn above average." I agree with your overall point, though.

Brian Sabean is hilarious. All the same, this is better than signing Hunter to his ridiculous contract (and, to be honest, better than signing Soriano to his ridiculous contract).

I enjoyed the highlights, but the song playing throughout that video is just horrendous. Anyway, YAY! Opening day should be fun (hopefully along with the rest of the season).

It can't hurt to ask - I'd be up for it, although I wouldn't give up Hill for him. He'd probably put up similar numbers to Fukudome, right? Or am I off base? -
I'd be all about it, if the price is right. I think that Cameron is generally underappreciated. As far as Pie goes, I think, and I'm really just guessing here, that badnews' hesitation isn't because of his sparse playing time in the majors. I think it's more to do with the fact that he can't hit lefties to save his life, he's shown limited plate discipline, and he strikes out an awful lot - he's very toolsy, but there are doubts as to whether he'll ever translate into the star we're all hoping for.

I agree. This should be his absolute final chance. Let him start the season as a Cub. And to think I was dead set against that Tejada and Bedard deal when it was proposed. I wish I had a time machine to go back on tha t one. Ditto. Think of how Bedard would look in our rotation now. If I recall correctly, Bedard was never on the table. Hendry insisted on Bedard's inclusion, and that's the biggest reason the deal never went forward.

I think the original idea was to trade for someone decent to play SS, so just trading for Crisp (while not necessarily a bad idea in itself) kind of defeats the purpose. That said, I agree with whoever said that deal isn't good for the Padres (I'm not so sure it's good for the Cubs either, value-wise - Murton, Patterson and Cedeno is a good bit to pay just for Greene, but if the Cubs aren't going to play any of them, I suppose it's best to trade them).

YES! It's nothing new, I know, but this makes me ecstatic - I won't have to watch Matsui in a Cubs uniform next year.

OK then. Who plays center? Fukudome, maybe try Patterson there, or try to trade for someone like Church. I'm on board with this 100%. If the Cubs could somehow get Garza for Pie and some, I think the best option would be to sign Fukudome for CF (his numbers there would be a lot nicer than in RF, anyway), play Murton in RF (yeah, right), and keep Rich Hill. Crawford isn't worth it. -
I SO hope this amounts to nothing. I mean, Matsui? It makes even less sense than I've grown accustomed to.

Given that Pie's likely starting for us next year, I'd love to see him figure things out by the end of this league. I'd still rather just trade him, I think. He might net something of value, and I have my doubts about his capability to do much on the ML level. If we start him, though, they better give him a legitimate chance.

Dude. Cory Bailey gets a lot of ground balls. Is that typical of him? Plus, I like his K/BB. If he returns to the Cubs, is he anybody worth watching? I bet no, but I figured I'd ask. Plus, I'd really like it if Ronny Cedeno could put up a .385 OBP. That would be groovy. Not so sure about the 6 Errors, though.

Weren't these way off last time? If I'm remembering correctly (and I may not be), the word on the street about Bill James' projections is that they tend to be a little too kind to below average players; an .800 OPS doesn't seem too hard to come by.
