  1. i think that's what a Hammel trade would look like; think of how much sense an Aaron Blair - Hammel swap would have made, assuming, you know, sanity had prevailed likewise, the Cardinals have a 400+ IP hole to fill- when the alternatives are throwing 9(!) figures at Chen or Leake, maybe giving up Luke Weaver or Marco Gonzales for the same kind of pitcher, only due 2 years and $18M starts to look pretty desirable (this is more a basic example that admittedly ignores the obvious hurdles in StL/CHC dealings)
  2. No it doesnt? Dave Stewart's happy with his delicious doorstop ugh i gotta explain everything
  3. thinking on it, this sums up the trade pretty well http://babysimpson.co.uk/gallery/frames/4/9f15/164.jpg
  4. This is only an educated guess and when the Cub Reporter/AZ Phil updates their 40 man we'll know for sure, but I believe Warren is in the same boat as Grimm and Brothers. They have options, but they have to pass through Optional Assignment Waivers (which are revocable) in order to be sent down. In the case of Brothers that's probably not a huge barrier, but it seems likely that someone would try to claim Grimm or Warren so it's probably best to assume they can't be sent to Iowa. For the sake of completeness, but at the risk of a rebuke from sneaky, Hendricks could still be sent down. he could, but i'll happily bet you this year's RK MLB 1st he won't be
  5. my kingdom for a rim protector
  6. let there never be a doubt this FO hates guys who chase outside the zone & vice versa
  7. Szymborski was pointing out the horror show of his comps earlier on twitter
  8. Dan Rosenheck did a great essay on opt-outs http://www.economist.com/blogs/gametheory/2015/12/contracts-baseball
  9. about that... http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/top-100-prospects/2012/2612998.html i meant as a pitcher, lefty, gas, huge breaking ball, 13.5k/9 in AAA as a 22-year-old i just like that he was listed above Mike Trout 3.5 years ago and now we're talking about what we'd have to add on their end to give up .598 career OPS Javy Baez

  11. you still have to play those 19 intradivisional games, so i could see that at least being a tiebreaker, wanting to avoid a star player you're losing if at all possible

  13. i think we have a poster who might have some thoughts on that somewhere. "i like the way snrub thinks!"
  14. yeah if they didn't even have to part with Jose DeLeon, i'm prepared to be a little bit rankled about this trade
  15. yet the Lions are all lined up in the back of the end zone like he's gonna just heave it 80 yards There were inexplicably 2 lions on the sidelines at around the 20 yard line and Haloti Ngata on the field like, he could have been left completely unblocked and his slow ass wouldn't have affected the play in any way...oh, that Jim Caldwell

  17. fwiw James Shields had basically the same HR/9 as Dan Haren this year i could be talked into taking his contract off their hands, but not giving up an actual real prospect to do so

  19. it was talked about yesterday with price. some posters liked it because if he's good, you get out of 2 expensive years in his mid-late 30's at the end of the contract. if he's bad or just ok, you would have had him for 5 years anyway. But if he's good, those two years theoretically wouldn't be expensive, they'd be a bargain. Right...there's no scenario where the team comes out ahead with an opt out. Tell that to a Yankees team who hypothetically didn't re-sign A-Rod or Sabathia. hypothetically they could have traded either one at the same point assuming they possessed the foresight to see both guys crumbling; they were ultimately valued on the open market higher than what their remaining contractual obligations were

Right...there's no scenario where the team comes out ahead with an opt out. if a player scales back his asking price to get the opt-out, then sure why not, but just adding it on top to be nice like Hendry was always assumed to do with NTCs is obviously pretty foolish negotiation
