  1. No, those numbers don't mean a thing actually. Using them to determine who makes it is just as good as arbitrarily pulling a name out of a hat. They absolutely should count when comparing him to Grissom for a bench spot. It's "what have you done for me lately." ST numbers should have less impact when evaluating Pagan WRT Theriot and Restovich, but if someone shows they can put out when the pressure is on, that has to count for something.
  2. Having Z, Maddux and a bunch of #5s filling out the rotation doesn't qualify as depth, IMO. Why are all the young guys fighting for a spot on the team #5s? It sounds like you're mixing quality and quantity. The Cubs do enter the season with pitching depth, though there is a qualitative drop from the depth we would have with a healthy Prior, Wood, and even Miller. The real value to this youth depth is, if Marshall and/or Guzman show up in spot starts or temporary rotation duty and really dazzle, then the Cubs can re-enter mid-season talks for an impact bat like Tejada, Abreau, etc. with real trade value as opposed to fan perceived trade value. They are #5s because they have little to no ML success. Don't confuse their ceilings/potential with their current abilities. They'll be good one game and get rocked the next until they adjust. A bunch of minor leaguers don't qualify as ML rotation depth.

  5. Hey, you can never have too many closers in my book. You don't weaken what is strong for your team. Or you deal strength for strength and improve your team overall. That's what ST trades do for the most part. IMO, keeping Williamson is the best option, but I can see how he was on the block before our pen developed some holes. I pretty much had Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Ohman, Wuertz, and Novoa as locks before ST started. At least Hendry didn't pull the trigger too early. There really isn't much room to improve this team via trade right now. The spots we can improve drastically on (OF, 2B, SS) are spoken for barring a blockbuster move.
  6. Super. The rumors that he'd make the team just b/c he was out of options had me a little worried. Great stuff, spotty control.
  7. The reason we overpaid for Eyre and Howry (according to Jimbo) is that they can step in and close. Howry was offered closing roles with other organizations, but chose to come here and set up.
  8. In fairness to Pagan, he looked to be improving pretty steadily until his first full season in AAA. It could have been a fluke. I don't know. We might have to trust the scouts on this one.
  9. Another is that with Hairston starting at second, we dont have anyone who can play outfield on the bench. Grissom dude! Grissom really doesn't play OF. He kind of misreads the ball off the bad, tries to make up for it with non-existent speed, and then lets the ball go over his head for a triple instead of a routine out.
  10. Mabry will hit way more than twice that by himself. How many homers do you think he is gonna get? 10, 15? Last season he hit 8 in 246 AB. The year before he hit 13 in 240 AB. Take his left handed bat in Wrigley and I don't see how he doesn't put up 6+ HR this season. Our bench not having a combined 3 HR all year... INCONCEIVABLE!
  11. Mabry will hit way more than twice that by himself.
  12. I'll take Pagan b/c of his speed and defense, considering that they're both not offensive threats. Mabry already gives us power off the bench. Pagan can play all 3 OF positions fairly well. Restovich is pretty much a butcher from what I've seen.
  13. thats what i thought too but his spring #'s are quite good. he must have regained some if not all of his lost velocity. williamson is a big risk imo and has pretty much said he wants to close again anyway so why not deal him? If it wasn't for Wuerz's unforeseen troubles and Novoa's illness, Williamson probably would have been dealt.
  14. He usually just starts slow. Unfortunately, we need to at least tred water until Wood/Prior/Miller arrive. Well, I like Guzman and Marshall but they both walk too many guys. I don't know if I like the idea of both of them in the rotation at the same time. Actually, Guzman walks very few batters, historically speaking. Well, K/BB ratio has concerned me this spring .57 K/BB. Sample size, my man. Sample size.

  16. Angel Pagan is going to get the Ron Santo/Billy Williams Rookie of the Spring Award, which is voted on by people including the players. If the players think he deserves that, I would imagine there are going to be some unhappy campers if he's left off the team.

  18. I thought Bruce flat out asked Dusty if that was a possibility (having youngsters 4 and 5) and Dusty said no. i'll go and try to find that quote to make sure a) i'm not on crack and b) that i'm not slightly misquoting Bruce. edit: here we go IMO, it's Marshall. I raised the question yesterday if one of those guys could move into the 4th spot. Dusty said no. ^^^ from the 3/26 Game thread (Cubs/D-backs)
  19. I thought Aardsma's velocity went down the crapper. He was hitting 93-94 pretty consistently yesterday. :? Hopefully it isn't just straight stuff - didn't look like it considering he didn't get hammered.
  20. What a tool. He actually asked a reporter if he should have one of his backup MIF pitch...like he had no other option. How many pitchers did you have warming up in the pen late in the game? I don't like calling anyone a liar, but that's about as obvious as you can get.
  21. The plot thickens: http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-cub28.html What a bunch of freaking Nancies.
  22. If Nolasco is indeed a "premium pitching prospect" in other peoples' eyes, we should have gone a different way than Slappy.
  23. He'd look really good with a baseball imbedded in his earhole.
  24. Out of players? Sounds like an excuse to me. He could have gone another inning or two. He didn't use all of his pitchers, and they have the DH, so they aren't burning bench players when they change pitchers. BOOOOOO!!!! HISSSSSS!!! I was thinking the same thing but they said he didn't bring all of his pithers. But he had a DH so his pitchers should have been fresher.
