That was one hell of a shot he hit to win the game tonight. A game the Cavs had to have. And all James had to do was take 4.5 steps to make the shot. Officiating for star players in the NBA is crawling ever closer to WWE levels... There's not a player in the NBA they'd call a travel on in that situation. Maybe not a star player, but if it were Smush Parker or some other scrub takign a jump stop, and then 2 extra steps in the lane I'd bet they'd call it. I didn't see that. His pivot foot slid, but he jump stopped and ducked under with a pivot. Didn't seem that outrageous to me. He jumped stopped outside the lane, and ended up inside the circle. He used his right foot as a pivot foot, took an extra step and then one more half step. Even my sports hating, sports clueless wife was shocked at the amount of steps he took.

Tex was taken fifth by the Rangers. You really have to think the two teams preceding them were boneheads: The Devil Rays taking arguably the worst pitcher in baseball, Dewon Brazelton, and the Phillies selecting Gavin Floyd. Wonder if the Rays could use Tex :-k Wow, I didn't realize he went 5th. The Rays' management suck.

I feel for Jets fans. They've never really been happy at the draft. If they swing a trade and take Bush, I expect much happiness.

I don't know that Mauer has been proven to be the best pick. Prior had the great 2003, and then injuries set in. Mauer missed some time due to injuries as well. You'd be better off arguing that Texiera has been the most productive of the 3 top picks.

What a terrible decision by Houston. It's never a good idea to pass up the guy who can touch the ball 20-30 times a game to take the guy who, if he's a success, might impact 5-10 plays a game.

My thoughts are they are about a game or two above where I was thinking they'd be, or maybe it was hoping they'd be. I'm hoping they can stay above .500 with Lee out, and get another bat within the next month or so. The bench was weak to start, now it's devastatingly bad. I'm looking forward to the slow and deliberate return of some of the starting pitchers. Hopefully Lee can come back at full strength, and if it's ahead of schedule, all the better. And yeah, Pierre's contract shouldn't even be a topic this season. My thoughts on the overall picture are that I am fairly encouraged by Baker's lineups thus far, and the performance of Murton & Cedeno. I think that if Wood and Prior get back within the next 6 weeks, we can hold on until Lee gets back or a deal can be made. The key is going to be whether or not the staff as constructed can keep us afloat until Wood and Prior come back, and if the offense can muster enough without Lee to win games. I think the former can happen, and I'm conflicted on the latter. I'd like to see our bench changed. Bynum is completely, utterly useless, even by useless Cub bench player standards. Get rid of him, and maybe get rid of Hairston or Perez, and upgrade that, and that would help a bit.

The prevailing thought I have thru 20 games thus far is that Hendry is wise not to have extended Pierre yet. Despite overpaying for him, he shouldn't compound that error by signing him long term. He's really not very effective at getting on base, nor can he throw anyone out from CF. I'm sure he'll heat up a little, but I'm having doubts he'll get on base at anything close to a .350 clip.

I think today's game is a very good example of why Pierre hasn't been worth the prospect investment thus far. The blame for the loss, though, goes solely on the 'pen. All of them save Novoa were terrible, and Dusty didn't help matters with the double switch. -

What's ARam's OBP/walk rate? It seems like he's at least being a little patient, even if he isn't finding holes on some of his balls in play. -
People never get banned for disagreeing. They get banned for acting like idiots. Don't forget those that go against the groupthink... I don't know if I would classify it as "groupthink" but there are certain posters that get preferential treatment, who are very sarcastic, patronizing, and condescending when they disagree with others - but either they've been around forever or they know the moderators. Because when others post in a similar manner - they get warned right away while these folk don't. But it isn't group think necessarily. Badge- I was just making a throwaway crack. I didn't mean to open that can of worms again.

I'll never bring up what I previously wrote ever again. Can we PLEASE forget it ever happened? Let's go over more better things. Can we talk about Adam Dunn now? He's got piercing eyes and a natural, easygoing walk that I could watch for 162 games. I was posting an old joke. I hope it didn't upset you. Please know that no one here wants to see anyone banned unless they are repeatedly violating the board rules, and everyone here welcomes debate. However, NSBB is a place you have to bring you "A" game, and back up your arguments. It's not that dissent isn't tolerated, it's that poor arguments get stomped in favor of reasoned ones...

That is internet folk lore propageted by people who were banned here posting on other boards. I read many boards, but this is the only one I post on becuase of the moderators. And they are more than tolerant of discussion and disagreement. I've read stuff from people who were banned here saying exactly what you wrote. But what they got banned for was continuing to flaut the rules of the borad. I remember quite a while ago engaging in a debate with someone here over something. Can't remember what it was about. After I made one post, I decided that it was way, way too inflamatory and offensive - possibly to the point of insinuating that whoever I was debating with was stupid - so I went back and edited it. Regretfully, my debate partner had already read and commented on the pre-edited post ... but I didn't get banned, so I have to figure that there's at least some deliberation involved before banning someone. Unless posters blatently violate the Member Guidelines, I don't think anyone is banned without a warning.

If you're polling people for optimism, I'll give you a couple nuggets: Ramirez is going to start hitting any day now, and Wood should be back within 2 weeks. The team is playing fairly well right now. Marshall has been decent, and Murton and Cedeno have played well. But again, I'll repeat-Pointing out the flaws in your favorite team doesn't make you a pessimist, a jerk, a Communist, or a bad Cubs fan. It means you are thinking critically and making judgements based on logic and reason, and adjusting your expectations accordingly. There's not a single Cubs fan here that wants the team to lose and players like Perez and Jones to suck just to have their opinions of them proven correct.

In a word, yes. Hmm... I must have not been paying attention when my dad was raising me as a Cubs fan. I must have been staring at a bee or something when he told me I couldn't love the Cubs and be critical of them at the same time. Oh, brain! Why must you continue to use logic and reason when thinking? Don't you know that if you apply basic reasoning skills to baseball you automatically aren't a true fan?

Note to Village Idiot and hack Paul Sullivan- Cub fans used to be ripped for just going to games to drink and watch Sammy. Now that we have standards and expectations, and get on a player for being terrible, we're getting compared to Philly fans? What's even funnier is that you'd be all over the fans for accepting terrible play. You're a hack. Get off the Cubs beat if all you are going to do is pursue your smarmy, Cub-hating agenda.
