    That would be a bad move. There's not a catcher on the market who could replace Barrett's production while there are CF who are as good if not better than Wells. Sign JD Drew and you can have both Barrett and a good CF.

    Between Rogers and Sullivan the Trib have no good Cub reporters. they had a chance to sign bruce miles for $8 million but opted for rogers and sullivan for $5 million each. What a deal! 2 bad writers for $2m more than one really good one! Did Andy MacPhail swoop in and insert a "No-Freelancing" clause at the last moment?

    What Hendry accomplished this weekend was to basically start the offseason without one foot in a bucket. Had Aramis walked, he may have resorted to rash, desperate moves, and those don't usually work out. The real key is where he goes from here. We got great value from Ramirez and Wood's contracts-both far lower than most would have thought. We have plenty of cash to throw around. I'd like to see him be procative and strike quickly. The GM meetings are going to be a good place to start.

    That's a really untrue statement. He's probably been their best offensive player over the last three seasons. I think Z is more valuable, but it's not "clearly" anything, Phil. While the attempt at statistical analysis is welcome, range factor is garbage. The justification for his point could be made for Derrek Lee, too. Did Phil write a similar article 7 months ago when Lee was extended? While I want Ramirez to improve, if he simply recreates his 3 year averages over the course of this contract without an ounce of improvement he'll be a bargain. I really don't like Phil Rogers.

    Manning isn't exactly lighting it up. Are Giants fans wishing for their backup? Rex is good. Rex is learning. Rex has no running game and no O-Line. Cust him some slack.

    Griese would be doing nothing tonight too. Grossman has no running game to take the pressure off, and the receivers aren't getting open. Yes, he's trying to make things happen that aren't there...but that's because he has to. I'm not a big Grossman fan at this point, but lets be fair. Okay, but let's face it, we're not going to win with Grossman in there tonight. What does it hurt to put Griese in? It's the 2nd quarter of a 10-3 game, for starters. Secondly, you're trying to develop Rex. You want an endless parade of journeymen QB's or do you want to show patience with a good young QB who has started 16 games in 4 years?

    Well in fact we are higher than we were before. Derreck Lee isn't injured, we do not have Pierre in CF. We are not paying Wood $13 million. Miller is probably close to fully rehabed and is only getting $0.5 million more and could be our #5 next year (in APRIL). Prior "could" come back. We have a hitting coach that preaches more patient hitting practices. We have a manager that will not stand for loosing and demand the team win close games. (IE: not laying over for the pirates and reds). We have a president and team that knows fans are angry and they are obviously going to push hard for some top talent and the goal is to win next year. And according to sources payroll was upped to $115 mil. So I would hardly say we are were we were last year. We are MUCH better. And it's going to get MUCH better. The Cubs.com article that talks about Ramirez & Wood signing also said that Hendry will be talking with the agents for Pierre & Blanco over the next week. Ugh. We can do better than both of them.

    New England is snakebit. Demspey should have been your 5th shooter over Heaps. I guess they were saving him for the 6th spot. It was a pretty okay final, actually..I thought it was better than the World Cup final.

    Pretty darn good Cup final going to penalties. 1-1, with both goals coming in the second OT.

    If you think about it, that kind of contract might not be all to suprising if Hendry really is changing his style. Last year he was the slowest GM in baseball, and made barely any moves at the beginning of the offseason. Now, he will make a quick strike at a top FA target. That would be his final offer. If Drew and Boras took to long to look at the offer, and weren't definitive on an answer, Hendry will have moved on to another target for the the OF in a week or so. At least im hoping thats what this kind of large offer would mean. I don't see any of Boras guys signing quickly. Especially if the Cubs and Red Sox are both interested. He will use them to drive up the price. good point.

    Unless that was part of why Aramis came back and gave the discount-to allow JH to be more aggressive in improving the offense.

    Hendry does work fairly well with Scott Boras...

    Wow. That's a sweet deal for Drew. I don't know many other teams that would match that in per year, maybe an extra year though for less money. If this rumor is true, than I am very pleased with Hendry today. I kinda doubt it's true, but if it were I'd be absolutely thrilled if we signed Drew.
