  1. The other guy has more RBIs, and we all konw how much people love that stat. Plus it was noted that he plays on the team that apparently is running away with the regular season title. Patterson has been the best player in this league the year, but the other guy won the MVP... that kind of thing happens a lot in the big leagues too. Serena's comment about Home/Away splits with Gonzalez lead me to believe that he may play in a pretty heavy pitcher's park, which would close the gap that Patterson has. Gonzalez is also several years younger than Patterson. It is definitely a pitchers park. Huge park, tough to homer at. But here are his splits: G AVG AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS GDP Away Games 52 .260 219 30 57 11 1 6 31 13 43 2 1 6 Home Games 66 .339 248 53 84 15 4 10 51 30 34 5 1 3 South Bend as a team has 63 Road homers and 43 home homers. Carlos is the ONLY Silverhawk with more homers at home than on the road...
  2. Gonzalez was the MVP cause South Bend is far and away the best team in this league and he is their best player....He is the MWL Prospect of the year because he is just 19 and has sparkling numbers.
  3. PEORIA, IL— The Peoria Chiefs, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that reliever Walt Nolen has been promoted to AAA Iowa of the Pacific Coast League. His promotion, along with those of Michael Phelps and Tim Layden on Monday leaves the Chiefs roster at 22 players for Wednesday night’s game. Pitchers Michael Hyle and Jeffrey Teasley will join the Chiefs in time for Thursday’s home game against West Michigan. In 37 appearances with the Chiefs in 2005, Nolen was 7-4 with a 4.61 ERA. He started on Friday in game two of the Chiefs double header in Quad Cities and took the loss allowing seven runs in five innings. He went 1-1 in two starts and won six times out of the bullpen this season. Signed out of McNeese State in June 2004, Nolen struck out 60 in 66 1/3 innings this season and help opponents to a .234 batting average. He is expected to be with Iowa for their first game in New Orleans on Wednesday night which is just 200 miles from his native Lake Charles, LA. Hyle was a 22nd round draft pick in 2005 out of the University of Georgia. With the Northwest League’s Boise Hawks this season, Hyle was 3-5 with a 3.18 ERA in 15 games, seven of which were starts. He made his last three appearances out of the bullpen and is expected to be a reliever with the Chiefs. Hyle struck out 37 and walked 20 in 45 1/3 innings. The 23 year old right-hander was 3-5 this season at Georgia with a 4.54 ERA in 14 starts. He is a native of Marietta, GA and played high school ball at Lassiter High School with former Chiefs outfielder/catcher Tyler Parker. Teasley was signed in June 2005 as a free agent out of Point Loma Nazarene University in California. In 20 appearances with Boise, Teasley was 1-0 with a 5.19 ERA and four saves. In 26 innings he struck out 28 and walked 12. The right-hander has earned saves in each of his last three outings and has posted a 0.75 ERA in 12 August appearances. Teasley transferred to Point Loma Nazarene from San Diego State University for his senior season and posted an 8-2 record and a 2.54 ERA. He was a NAIA Honorable Mention All-American and All-GSAC. The Cubs drafted him in the 38th round in 2001 out of Grossmont High School which is also the alma mater of former Chiefs second baseman Mike McCoy. The Chiefs play Wednesday night at Quad Cities at 7:00 PM. Peoria Enters the game 26-31 on the half, six games out of first and 3.5 games behind in the Wild Card race. Peoria has 13 games left on the season including eight at home. The Chiefs next home game is Thursday August 25th against the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:00 PM.
  4. just about every night. And he loves to talk to anyone. I love chatting with Pete every chance i get at games. He turns 80 one week from today!
  5. If you follow the rest of the links too there is a certain radio broadcaster quoted a few times as well... http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/12444524.htm
  6. Kevin Baxter of the Miami Herald spent 3 days in Peoria on this series. He interviewd Montanez and Gallagher as South Florida natives and also talked with myself, Rocky Vonachen, Pete Vonachen and a couple of our interns about the business/promotion side of baseball. On the first segment from Sunday there were quotes from Rocky and also photos of O'Brien Field on the slide show. And this segment on baseball in Peoria as a feature!! http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/12452382.htm
  7. MWL MVP went to Carlos Gonzales of South Bend. He also won Prospect of the Year. He is a 19 year old Left handed hitting OF hitting .302 with 16 HR and 82 RBI, 83 runs scored, 26 doubles on easily the best team in the league. Plus he has 12 outfield assists. You can't vote for your own players, I had Gonzales as the 1st team MVP and Prospect of the year as well for what its worth. He killed us last week at SB and we face him again at Peoria next weekend. South Bend was the only other MWL team with 3 players on the team and they swept the awards with their manager Mark Haley winning MOY as well.
  8. PEORIA, IL— For the first time in seven years the Peoria Chiefs placed three players on the Midwest League Post-Season All-Star Team. Second baseman Eric Patterson, outfielder Ryan Harvey and right-handed pitcher Sean Gallagher were all selected to the 14-man team. The only other MWL team to place three players was South Bend who has had the best record in the league all-season. Patterson, an 8th round selection out of Georgia Tech in 2004, heads into Wednesday’s game leading the league in batting average at .333. He is also in the top five in the league in stolen bases (38), hits (139), runs (85), triples (10), on-base percentage (.406) and slugging percentage (.529). Patterson also leads all MWL second basemen in fielding percentage with only nine errors in 106 games. Eric has homered 13 times and driven in 67 while leading the team in walks. With 13 games remaining he is 16th on the Chiefs single season list in hits, third on the single season slugging list, 6th in average, 11th in stolen bases, 8th in triples and 8th in runs scored. Harvey, the 6th overall selection in 2003 out of Dunedin (FL) High School, leads the MWL in homers (22) and RBI (92) with 13 games to play despite battling hamstring injuries and back spasms. Harvey is 6th in the league with 29 doubles, 3rd with 53 extra base hits and 5th with a .502 slugging percentage. Ryan is batting .266 with 65 runs scored. He has a shot at the single season Chiefs RBI record of 104 and is currently 6th on the single season home run list. Gallagher, a 12th round pick in 2004 out of St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) High School, made headlines in April and May by starting the season with 40 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. The stretch was a Chiefs record and he was within five outs of a Midwest League mark when the first earned run scored in mid-May. With an expected two starts remaining, Sean is 13-5 with a 2.86 ERA on the season. He is now second in the league in ERA for the first time all year and tied for first in wins. In addition, Gallagher enters play tonight 4th in the league in strikeouts (132). Gallagher started the Chiefs no-hitter on April 20th in Cedar Rapids throwing the first six innings. He also tossed the first six innings of the Chiefs one-hitter at home against Kane County on May 1st. He is 8th on the Chiefs single season win list, 15th on the ERA list, and 20th on the strikeout list. The MWL Post-Season All-Star Team was selected by a vote of league managers. In addition to the three Chiefs, the rest of the team consisted of: Cesar Nicolas (South Bend) and Tonys Gutierrez (Dayton) at first base; Patterson at second base; David Winfree (Beloit) at third base; Matt Tuiasosopo (Wisconsin) at shortstop; Carlos Gonzales (South Bend), Harvey, and Javier Herrera (Kane County) in the outfield; Michael Collins (Cedar Rapids) at catcher: John Jaso (SW Michigan) at designated hitter; Gallagher as RH pitcher; Chi-Hung Cheng (Lansing) as LH pitcher; Matt Elliott (South Bend) as RH reliever; and Kevin Ool (Quad Cities) as LH reliever. Carlos Gonzales of South Bend was selected as both the MWL Most Valuable Player and Prospect of the Year while South Bend manager Mark Haley was selected Manager of the Year. The last time the Chiefs placed three players on the Post-Season All-Star Team was 1998 when shortstop Pablo Ozuna, RHP Tristan Jerue and RH reliever Gene Stechschulte were all selected. The team high is 1996 when the Chiefs placed four players: second baseman Andy Hall, outfielder Kerry Robinson, RHP Britt Reams and LH reliever Armando Almanza. The Chiefs had catcher Daric Barton on the team in 2004, third baseman Travis Hanson in 2003 and shortstop John Nelson was the lone selection in the Championship 2002 season. The Chiefs play Wednesday night at Quad Cities at 7:00 PM. Peoria Enters the game 26-31 on the half, six games out of first and 3.5 games behind in the Wild Card race. Peoria has 13 games left on the season including eight at home. The Chiefs next home game is Thursday August 25th against the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:00 PM.[/img]
  9. Thanks for the question! That "contest" lasted about two days. It was only a mustache to start with. It was a lot more talk than action. Aaron Smith and Joe Simokaitis started and when no-one else joined them they bailed on it. Smith and Larsen did it earlier in the year for a road trip but that was it. I think they all knew they couldn't compete with my goatee!! And no, Patterson was not involved...
  10. For a guy who was a 3rd baseman 4 months ago, I was very impressed. He was 90-92 on the QC scoreboard. Im not sure how accurate thier board is but either way 1 or 2 MPH up or down is still good. He had a good curve and good control as well. Probably helped that we were up 14-6 so no pressure which Im sure for Julio and Tom was an ideal situation to bring him into for a 1st outing. im interested to see how he performs back to back or with runners on when he comes in... That leads me to ask - do you know if Alfredo throws anything besides a FB and a curve? He did also throw a change a couple of times the other night. No sign of a slider yet though or anything fancy like a split or sinker. Ill check Wednesday, just didn't have time to ask TP (Tom Pratt) over the weekend.
  11. I have no idea. All I was told was he had a left arm injury and wouldn't be coming back this season. I'll ask Matt Johnson our trainer on Wednesday. And you are right about guys playing out of position. We haven't had a first baseman since mid-June, our 3rd basemen (larsen/granato) have been playing 1st or left and with Harvey out for a while our DH (flowers) has been in the outfield. Its a testament to Julio as a manager that we are still even in this race...
  12. Yeah, no work days are normal until October, and then Im just bored! Things are different home/road and I don't want to bore anyone so I'll do it as a timeline though at home, I guarantee you no two days are the same. This example is for a 7:00 home game. 11:00 arrive, start working on stats/game notes. Stats are easy they go to coaches just print/copy/staple, my intern Bryan Moore usually did this. Gamenotes are more complex adding in numbers, writing paragraphs on starting pitchers, oppoising team, last night's game recap etc. My game notes are 13 pages long in Microsoft Publisher. Then I also update my 6 Excel sheets. 1:00 grab a lunch either bringing something, fast food or occasionally heading out to a sit-down with co-workers. 2:00 usually by this time Julio has his lineup ready as the players show up around 2:30 or 3. So we head down to get the lineup, write it on the board, etc. I usually spend some time in the clubhouse chatting with the coaches, trainer or players as well when I go down to get the lineup. Then we usually have some "dead time" until BP which begins at 4:30. Here we help out where needed, placing giveaways at the gates, setting up tables and chairs, moving tables, etc. and then when the visitors arrive we get their lineup and then takes full lineups to both clubhouses and the media room. 4:30 during BP I sometimes hang out on the field and chat or sometimes I shag fly balls, somtimes i catch for the fungo hitters and when it is just too hot I head up to the booth and get my book ready. After BP i just get ready and kind of roam around the ballpark when I am done. By getting ready I mean making sure I have everything for my Video Board pre-game show and fill out my scorebook. 6:15 head down to the field 6:30 pre-game show 7:00 game time post-game. Bryan writes the recap while i do the post-game show and run box scores down to the managers and see if they have any concerns over scoring. usually i chat a little here post-game but not too long. Then i go-over Bryan's recap and post it on the website while he faxes to our media. Then we hit the bar... As for my other responsibilities: I run the website Handle all media requests, pre and post game as well as phone interviews for players/coaches Am responsible for player movements and other press releases Help out with marketing ideas Create/Compile our monthly Programs which are handed out at the gates and in the off-season I compile/create our Media Guide, Calendar and Yearbook. Hope that answers your question!
  13. our trainer, Matt Johnson said he doesn't expect anyone immediately. We did have an eight-man bullpen so it isnt dire straits. That leaves our bullpen as follows: RHP Walt Nolen RHP Alfredo Francisco RHP Drew Dickson RHP Mike Jones RHP Adalberto Mendez LHP Jerry Blevins (can't throw until Friday as yesterday's starter)
  14. The Peoria Chiefs, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that relievers Michael Phelps and Tim Layden have been sent to High-A Daytona of the Florida State League. The Chiefs, who won’t play again until Wednesday, have not immediately had either player replaced on the roster which now sits at 23 players. Phelps, a right-hander, was the Cubs 11th round pick this June out of Central Missouri State and had the best numbers of any Chiefs reliever this season. In 12 appearances, Phelps was 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA and a save. He allowed earned runs in just two of his 12 games, July 19th vs. Cedar Rapids and August 5th at Kane County. Phleps struck out 17, walked three and allowed just 12 hits in his Chiefs career. Layden, a left-hander, was the Cubs 6th round pick out of Duke University in 2004. He made 38 appearances for the Chiefs in 2005, second highest on the team. Layden was 4-4 with a 4.62 ERA and four saves. In 50 2/3 innings, he struck out 53, walked 22 and allowed just two home runs. Layden’s August ERA in nine appearances was just 2.84 and he picked up three straight wins out of the bullpen between July 31st and August 5th. The Chiefs have Monday August 22nd and Tuesday August 23rd off before returning to Quad Cities for a 7:00 PM game on Wednesday August 23rd. Entering Midwest League play on Monday, the Chiefs are 26-31 on the half, six games out of first and five games behind in the Wild Card race. Peoria has 13 games left on the season including eight at home. The Chiefs next home game is Thursday August 25th against the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:00 PM.

  16. Rivera has looked great at 3rd. I think he played more shortstop in college, but he has impressed at third base moving to the line and also toward short. he has a strong arm and is improving at the plate daily as evidenced by a 4 hit game today
  17. Michael Phelps will leave us tomorrow morning....0-1 1.59 ERA 12 games, 17 inn, 12 hits, 3 bb, 17 k....by far been our best reliever...
  18. Just not as sharp. The curve isnt as tight, the fastball isnt as fast, the location isnt as precise. It will happen when you are 19 and logging 140 innings...
  19. there were 2 walks...1 in 2nd, 1 in 5th...i missed one going through the box score...my scoreshee is too cluttered with lines and runs scored in this game!
  20. yeah they left Mike Cooper out on an island in the 3rd...without even warming anyone up until he gave up 7... He finished 2ip (+ 9 batters faced in the 3rd) 14 hits, 13 r, 12 e, 1bb, 3k. ERA on the day 58.5 and on the season goes from 3.3 to 5.71....OUCH and Gallagher just gave up a 2-run shot..14-4 in 4th...7 Ks for Sean
  21. Technically Sonnanstine (who has been promoted but will still qualify) is ahead 2.545 to 2.552....and Gallagher just allowed two in the 1st so his ERA is rising as we speak...
  22. My understanding is that we are getting someone from Boise before our game here on Wednesday, but that may not be accurate....And from what I heard on the bus, Daytona has a pitcher who just underwent an appendectomy and that is the reason for the move.
  23. Ball was 10 feet foul....Julio Garcia tossed as a result.... Chiefs now up 3-1 in the 3rd
  24. Just in case there are any issues again or a change of mind I'll wait until tomorrow. I'll ask tonight if it is public knowledge I'll put it up from the hotel. The player did know he was going up and a tickets had been purchased, but I want to wait until I get the go-ahead.
  25. yeah he will be in our bullpen. we have a reliever going up to Daytona on Monday who was supposed to go up yesterday but we couldnt get a player from Boise cause they are in Canada and had transportation issues and Julio didnt want us heading into a 5 game/3 day stretch with just 23 players. Francisco tossed 38 2/3 innings at Mesa. he will probably get in tonight since Nolen cant go, Blevins being held for game 2 tomorrow. Phelps has thrown 2 days in a row, Dickscon 3 of 5 days and Jones was getting some treatment today. So that leaves us Mendez and Layden rested.
