    You need let go of what Pujols has done in the past, and focus on what he's going to do in the future. If you sign him for 9 years, and he's elite for 4 of those but only good -- and vastly overpaid -- for the other 5, it's a bad deal. The absence of an immediately-available better option doesn't justify jumping into a bad deal. A well-run Cubs team can easily take the hit of a player being overpaid in the final years of his deal. Just because they can doesn't mean they should. Yeah, it kinda does.

    Citation needed. My wife is a tech/engineering recruiter. Absolutely common practice to run a programmer, an engineer, etc. through several hours long tests. Can take a whole day and sometimes longer. Often the final interview will be with the folks on the team--even if it is a manager being hired. Often, those teams ask the best questions. I don't think it's as common as you think it is.

    Merchandise revenues are shared by all 30 teams. For every Cubs Pujols jersey sold, the Cards will get as much $ as the Cubs. (AFAIK It's not 100% that simple, but basically that's the case.) I believe it really is that simple when it comes to merchandise.

    Most? I'd say most Cubs fans do. Most here perhaps. I have yet to talk to anyone in the real world who even knew who Hoyer was.

    How is it not flawed? Comparing their ages and contracts is hinged on what type of players they are. It's flawed because I don't think there's a strong connection between skillset and aging curve. The notion that Soriano should be expected to decline faster than Pujols because his game is more predicated on speed seems specious. The studies I remember seeing have shown the relationship to be weak or nonexistent. I'm open to being shown otherwise, though. But it's not just his speed; Soriano has always been an obviously flawed, streaky player. Failing speed was hardly the only major concern, as that guys like him tend to not age well as their relatively limited skillset starts to decline. And I'm saying that all sounds like rubbish to me. A "streaky" player ages differently than a "non-streaky" player? A "flawed" player ages differently than a "non-flawed" player? (And dare I even ask how "streaky" and "flawed" are defined?) Really? How so? And what is that based upon? Sounds like something you made up, rather than anything that's actually been illustrated with rigorous research. Again, I'm open to being shown otherwise. There must be some article or study you're basing this upon. It's probably based on their results for the 10 years each of them have been in the league.

    I don't think you'll find many that think Reyes is not a good player. The problem is, he will cost a lot of money and plays a position where we don't have a huge hole to fill. Prince Fielder will cost a lot of money and fill a huge hole. Priorities, man.

A: Free agent after 2012, 4.8 WAR last 3 years, Best 3 seasons - 4.2, 1.7, 1.6 B: Free agent after 2012, 7.8 WAR last 3 years, Best 3 seasons - 4.4, 3.9, 3.2 Going forward, Cabrera is a better bet to outproduce Byrd with the 7 year age advantage and all. Maybe he is that 800 OPS guy he was last year, but I wouldn't count on it especially when combined with the less than stellar defense. I'd give him a shot over Byrd next year, but I certainly wouldn't give up more than a fringe prospect or two to get him.

    Who the hell is saying that? Whoever wants to see a bad team next is not a Cubs fan. Lots of people because that's the message they're getting from people like @thekapman who think the team is the worst team in the history of the game with no possible way of being competitive next year.

    Most of that 3rd tier should actually be listed with the 4th or 5th tier.

    Yeah, and I'm not sure what to take from it. How strict will he be with that? Does he oppose ever giving any big contracts to any guy who is outside his prime years? What if he's in his prime when you give the contract, but he'll exit it during the contract (Prince)? It's a great rule to follow in general terms, but I think it has to be a flexible rule when considering specifics and I'd imagine that's what Theo will do in practice. I'm not sure about that, though. It was in direct response to a question about pre-and-post prime players, and I don't really think he made any sort of statement that he would never sign a 32 year old. More specifically, he said the ideal is to have as many players as possible in their prime but there will always be a mix of younger, team-controlled guys as well as veterans.
