  1. FWIW, the Boston Herald and Rotoworld speculate that the Reds will join in the Indians/Red Sox deal to make it a three team, nine player swap, where Kearns goes to Cleveland and Clement to Cincy.
  2. The deal may not be off. However, some are speculating that a nine player deal involving the Reds and Austin Kearns may materialize. Boston Hearld Rotoworld speculates Boston Globe
  3. As who promised? Some NSBB folks? Rhodes is a respectable arm that Philly needs. Michaels is a spare bench player. Rhodes, like all relievers, is inconsistant. Michaels is a spare bench player with a .380 career OBP. If the Cubs had a lineup full of "spare bench players," they'd have one of the better offenses in the league. The fact that the Phillies are settling on Arthor Rhodes for Michaels, tells you the value Jason Michaels has around baseball. He couldn't beat out the likes of Glanville, Ledee, and Bryd, for goodness sakes. And that decision making got the Phillies what? A new GM? So Jason Michaels is the reason Wade and Bowa aren't there any longer? Decision making, not just that singular decision. I know youre just dying to argue, but at least read what he said. What do you think? If I honestly knew, I wouldn't have posted...
  4. Great, you confirmed it! I posted a similar story from Rotoworld here: Link
  5. You're the first person to say this. I'll say this, maybe Michaels does have some glaring deficiency that none of us have noticed, but maybe he doesnt, and the upshot is that he is better than Juan Pierre (hell, better than most CF in baseball), and all it costs to find out is Arthur Rhodes. Forgive me, but I can't tell if you're serious or if this is sarcasm. :-k A number of posters have pointed this out.
  6. This trade is on hold pending the reliever the Indians get from Boston. Mota failed his physical.
  7. Guillermo Mota Failed his physical. Rotoworld
  8. Michaels' 3 year numbers against RHP are plenty good for a CF. Add in that he'll face some LHP in full time duty to raise those, and it's still a perfectly fine argument. I didn't say his numbers weren't good against RHP. My point has to do with using an extreme example of a platoon and saying that the results should be used to support an argument for fulltime play.

If the Cubs had a lineup full of "spare bench players," they'd have one of the better offenses in the league. if he was all that great of a player, one would think he would manage to accumulate more than a year and a half's worth of big league ABs before he reached 30. we are talking about the guy who could't win a position over Doug Glanville and Marlon Byrd here. There are much better ways of making a point about Michaels' offensive abilities. Unfortunately, this is not a reasonable argument. The nature of a platoon is to allow a guy to play to his strengths so pointing out that Michaels' and Lofton's platoon numbers were higher than the entire Cubs outfield doesn't necessarily mean that, given fulltime play, the same results will exist. You might want to point out that Michaels' splits are more than respectable (even though he batted 34 points higher against LHP). By comparison, when Murton batted only against LHP his numbers were exceptional however, the more he was exposed to RHP the more his overall numbers declined.
  10. BH05 I hope you're right because Mr. Hendry seems to have a lot of money tied up in injured pitchers. I wonder if Wood is throwing the ball 60 feet without pain? If not I would have to assume he would be behind Miller in rehabbing his shoulder and that would be June at the earliest. It was reported in the paper that the Cubs believe Wood is a month ahead of Miller.
  11. I think Miller's convinced that he'll be able to pitch effectively this season which is why he was willing to sign without a saftey net (an option). From what he and his agent said last night, on the radio, he has basically been assured of a spot in the rotation; so don't expect to see him out of the bullpen. Of note, he has already started throwing the ball 60 feet without pain. Perhaps, he is overestimating his ability to come back quickly from this surgery but it seems he's staking his current (and future) standing on doing well enough to get a longterm deal. Only time will tell.
  12. I also read in the paper (or maybe Bruce Miles posted here) that Hairston improved his relationship with Baker as the year progressed.
  13. I'm more excited about Miller. Weaver was just someone to keep us in games but if healthy, Miller maybe dominating. With the Cubs off of his short list, his demands will certainly have to go down. One of the other teams will probably get him relatively cheap for one year. I don't know about you, but I'm sick of "If healthy" be attached to every player on this team, especially pitching. Its like we are the Red Cross of the MLB. 90+ years and we are hoping 2 guys will be healthy enough to pitch, and counting on a 40 year old broken down maddux. I hate being a pessimist this early, but for the money, the pitching scares me. I understand the frustration but this is the way it is, for now. The 2007 rotation will be minus Maddux and most likely Wood will be gone as well (there is a mutual option). At least in Miller the Cubs have the opportunity to strike gold. If he's a bust they can always go with the guys that have been here all along (Williams, Rusch, Hill, etc).
  14. If the Cubs make that trade it has more to do with finding a home for Walker so that someone else can start at 2B (Plus, Walker may have an opportunity to start there pending Roberts staus). The argument for getting rid of Corey is to allow him to have a change of scenery. I'm not so sure the Cubs want Matos but they might not be able to get a better quality ML for Walker. From the Orioles perspective, ridding themselves of Matos allows Patterson to start.
  15. Hi, that's being discussed here: Link
  16. That should be the most one sided competition in ST, but something tells me in won't be. One-side in favor of whom? Frankly, I 'd like the best overall player to get the job. If it turns out to be Walker that's fine but I wouldn't mine Hairston earning the job either. If he is 100% healthy, like he claims, he might be the best complete 2B on the roster.

  18. Mike Kiley, Link, seems to echo the same sentiments. Yeah, i read that too. I wonder if it's true or a smoke screen attempt to get the Rays to lower their asking price? In either case, we have people in-house that can do the job. Spring Training should settle this issue for the starter's job.
  19. I'm not so sure. Ponson could be healthier since it's hard to miss time with pulled fat. I got $100 that says that pulled fat wins more games than Kerry Wood this year. Make it ERA+ and you might have a deal. Wins are a poor indicator of pitching performance. ditto
  20. I'm not so sure. Ponson could be healthier since it's hard to miss time with pulled fat. I got $100 that says that pulled fat wins more games than Kerry Wood this year. Why is everything about Wood? The comparisons were Miller and Ponson.
  21. Not quite, unless the Braves plan on shipping him to Baltimore.
