  1. If Ramirez hadn't loafed out of the batter's box, that would have been an inside-the-park homerun.
  2. OK, so now watch Baker call for a sac bunt here. :D
  3. But does he catch the ball? How fast is he? Can he sac bunt a runner from first to second? Can he play multiple positions in the infield? Is he a switch hitter? Those are the things Cubs look for.
  4. Maddux got a questionable called strikeout on Jacobs. I haven't seen any sign of him being squeezed.
  5. What happened? Text message..."I heart U, actual leadoff hitter! Come play for my crappy team!" As the Cubs keep losing, the banter here becomes more and more entertaining.
  6. Not having been on the basepaths in such a long time, I think he got lost between 1st and 2nd.
  7. If I were the Marlins, I'd paint those seats camouflage. I can't believe how much orange I'm seeing right now.
  8. A little soon to make that judgment, don't you think? Furcal had offseason knee surgery and started off terribly, but his OBP is already about 30 points higher than Ronny's and 60 points higher than Pierre's. 5 more years and 45 million for 30 points of OBP...I think they made the right call. Again, it's a little too early to judge. There's only a 30 point difference in OBP right now, but the gap is widening rather than closing. Furcal had offseason knee surgery and probably shouldn't have gotten onto the field as quickly as he did. If Ronny can cut down on the throwing errors and drastically improve his plate discipline, he could be an asset on a contending club, but he does need to improve in those two areas.

  10. How about jerking Walker around in the offseason, virtually guaranteeing that he won't be back next year. I'd rather not have Hairston as my starting 2B, and EPatt probably won't be ready yet, so add 2B as yet another hole that will need to be filled.
  11. Who - Ozzie? What strategy are we talking about? Ozzie is no genius...Fans give him far too much credit. When you have that lineup with a healthy pitching staff that gives you 6-7 innings just about every start you are going to win and win often. How many moves does Ozzie actually make during a game? Give the credit to the GM Williams, this is his team, and a fine team at that. 1. Healthy pitching staff - Ozzie pulls his pitchers at 110 pitches - 115 max. Do you think the fact that the Cubs starting pitchers are hurt so often is just bad luck? 2. How many moves does Ozzie make during a game? If he's smart, not very many. Usually the best thing a manager can do is put his best players on the field and get out of the way. Dusty believes calling for a double switch is making a good move. I'm sure there are cases when it is, but often he is replacing a position player with an inferior bench player.
  12. He's handsome - I'll give you that - but smoking hot?
  13. Ah, good! I'm all for Weaver-ball, too, but from your original post, I thought you were endorsing manufacturing runs with high-OBP players. It's only natural to compare the Cubs to the Angels right now. We're 29th in OBP and they're 30th. We're 30th in SLG and they're 28th. The Angels lead the league in stolen bases. The Cubs are tied for 8th. One big difference: the Angels don't bunt so much, but the Cubs are 4th in MLB.
  14. What do you mean by "manufacture runs?" I can't tell if that was a sarcastic question or not It's not a sarcastic question. I'm with you about the lack of OBP. But it sounds like you're in favor of "manufacturing runs" instead of "Weaver-ball." Players with high OBP are usually also players who hit a lot of homeruns. It sounds to me like you want to have high OBP without relying on homeruns. That would be hard to do. Players in the top 40 in OBP last year with fewer than 15 homers: Luis Castillo, Placido Polanco, Sean Casey, Joe Mauer, and Bill Mueller. I really don't know how we could field a high-OBP team that "manufactured runs" without relying on power. I think you missed the point of his post. He meant that the Cubs have always sucked at manufacturing runs, but they could get away with that sometimes due to the fact they also hit a lot of homeruns. Now that the Cubs can't hit homeruns and we still suck at manufacturing runs, our suckiness is even more obvious. I thought he was endorsing Weaverball, if anything. That's why I asked the question. It wasn't clear to me exactly what he meant. As for "manufacturing runs," is there a team that doesn't suck at it?

  17. i never said he was the answer, just that he'd be one of our best hitters instantly, even with minimal improvement over his current average. His current average is .100. What do you consider minimal improvement? i was being facetious, do you want the definition, too? I'd rather have Alfonzo's "absolute psychological profile."

  19. This surely complicates things if the Cubs are to go into fire sale mode. That's surprising. Rosenthal must have information that Nate Silver doesn't: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=5090
  20. Is that you, Jim Hendry? Murton would be a better leadoff hitter than what we're using right now.
  21. Then use Murton or Church in a deal for a good RF, and let Jones play CF. I like it. Or if we can trade pitching for a good RF at the all-star break, I wouldn't be opposed to getting a good RF, a Jones/Murton platoon, and Church in CF. One of the writers at BP (I forget which one - Sheehan maybe) envisions circumstances in which Philly would trade Abreu for Maddux. That scenario would require Maddux to pitch more like he did in his first few starts than his last few starts, and I do believe that Abreu is at the beginning of his decline, but that would be a no-brainer if it were possible.
