  1. Well, I've never argued that we should have signed Furcal. I've just argued that it's too early to call him a bust. If I were running the Cubs, I would have worried about RF and CF (in that order) before worrying about SS. But had we signed Furcal, and had we been in a position to contend, I wouldn't have been upset had we given him a contract similar to the one that LA gave him. He's locked up for what should be his prime years, and if he's a bust, LA won't be stuck with him for two more years like the Cubs would be with their 5 year offer. That said, overpaying for talent IS a good idea if that talent could push a contender over the top. In 2003 and 2004 (and maybe 2005) the Cubs were in a position to win and overpaying for top-level talent would have been justified. I don't think the 2006 team was in such a position in the offseason, so it didn't bother me much when LA upped the ante and he went elsewhere.
  2. Well, maybe the Cubs have been reading up on the benefits of a four-man rotation and decided they don't need a fifth starter.
  3. No, he's in the rotation again. Haven't you heard? Please no. For who? Rich Hill. Dusty and Hendry got together and decided that Rusch can give up just as many runs as Hill, but at a higher price.
  4. No, he's in the rotation again. Haven't you heard?
  5. Is that sarcasm? I sure hope so. Yep. I still remember hearing about the trade on the radio and not believing my ears.
  6. Roberto Novoa: He's not as good as Farnsworth, but he's not a jerk. Good trade!
  7. YESSS! Gotta start somewhere. Way to go Hendry... In fact, our defense has improved every year since 2003. If we give Hendry 30 more years, he'll put together a defense so good that we'll shut out our opponents every game.
  8. On the bright side, the Cubs are #5 in MLB in defensive efficiency, ahead of the #6 White Sox. We finished last year at #13. Hendry's offseason magic did improve the defense.
  9. That's a lie... This order doesn't HAVE a heart. Barrett = FIRE! and INTENSITY!
  10. How about OBP among all players that have started every game in the season? I dunno about that - it would be hard to check on since different teams have played different numbers of games thus far, but I can tell you this: Pierre's OBP in the leadoff spot is the worst among qualified batters in MLB. Cedeno's OBP in the #2 spot is second worst among batters with 75 AB or more at that position in the order. Our OBP in the 1 and 2 spots in the order is actually worse so far this year than it was in 2005, when we had that fabulous 1-2 punch of Patterson and Perez. hilarious. But, but, but we haven't been dealing with a full deck, it's the injuries!! No, the guys in the heart of the order haven't been driving in the guys at the top of the order when they don't get on base.

  12. Random stat: Among qualified batters, Pierre has the lowest OBP of any leadoff hitter in baseball. By 35 points.
  13. One of them beat cancer? Actually I think both of them have. You're right. I didn't realize Baker had been diagnosed with prostrate cancer. Up until now, I thought the only cancers he had to deal with were Farnsy and Sosa.
  14. Don't worry. He has no speed. As Hawk Harrelson would say, getting on base isn't important. It's what you do when you get on base that's important. Therefore: Pierre > Cabrera
  15. Neifi gets brushed back off the plate and promptly adjusts himself.
