  1. Joe Sheehan from Baseball Prospectus on the trade:
  2. I've got no problem with Walker for Ceda. Walker wouldn't be back next year, anyway, and Ceda may or may not contribute in the future. This organization has developed some decent pitchers in recent years. However, I can't believe Hendry did the deal for Izturis instead of a couple prospects. Izturis - whose glove is probably going to be worth three wins next year - is redundant on a team with Cedeno and Perez.
  3. Omar Vizquel is Izturis's #1 comp in PECOTA, with a score of 53, which means at his age, he looks a lot like Vizquel did at the same age. Izturis's #2 comp is Cristian Guzman, though, with the same score of 53. I hope he progresses like Vizquel in the near future, but I think it's more likely we see the second coming of Cristian Guzman.
  4. Yeah, I thought it was really odd that he signed with Houston knowing how bad they were/are.
  5. Front page of ESPN has a story about the Red Sox trying to get Clemens. Apparently Clemens wanted to be traded to Boston, but everyone's favorite owner (McLane) thinks the Astros still have a shot at the playoffs. Houston has, according to the simulations at BP and coolstandings, a 3-4% chance of making the playoffs. They should have been sellers, not buyers.
  6. That's not what casual fans are saying now, it's what Jim Hendry is saying. Strange that so many here knew this team would not be good, but Jim "can't put his finger on" what went wrong this year. The fact that he can't see the problem or won't acknowledge the problem means we can write the Cubs off in 07, too.
  7. I am anxiously awaiting the beginning of the Cesar Izturis Era. With his defense, the Cubs might be winning 4-3 instead of losing 15-4.
  8. Its easy. 1) Defense is not our problem. 2) Maddux's contract was up after this year, so his millions come off the book, we could spend it somewhere else. 3) Izturis's contract is in the range of $4-5.5 million for the next two years for production (both defense and offense) that is the same as Cedeno's who would do it at a fraction the cost. edit: 4) we could have had one of Los Angeles's better prospects (who were cheap and have a WHOLE LOT more upside then Izturis) insted by most accounts. How the hell do we know that we could have had one of LAs better prospects? Just because somethings been reported doesen't make it the truth. Will Carroll is very reliable. But even if you don't want to believe we could have had Kemp or Guzman, please address the other 3 points.
  9. Two big problems with your statement: 1) So if someone states that Hendry made a terrible trad, that's a personal attack against him? No, it's not. People here don't dislike Hendry because of his body type or his somewhat lacking sense of style. He is disliked because he doesn't get it. 2) There are plenty of people who have jobs that they don't deserve or can't do well. The fact that Hendry is a GM doesn't mean he knows how to put a team together better than some of the people who post here. Evidence: many here knew this team would be bad BEFORE the season started, but Hendry was just on TV saying he can't put his finger on what went wrong this year.
  10. I don't see Aramis here next year. I think he will opt out of his contract, and there are several teams that will need a 3B next year. I doubt Murton will be our starting LF. Look for the Cubs to sign a Ryan Klesko or Luis Gonzalez type past-his-prime veteran.
  11. sure, I don't really have a problem with it. especially when we're out of the playoff race. but it would be nice if he looked at other stats, too - like Jacque's splits against lefties, for example.
  12. With so many teams looking for pitching, I can't believe we didn't trade Rusch at the deadline.
  13. Coming into tonight, Mabry had faced Webb 7 times and had five hits, including a HR and a double. Dusty does look at stats, but he doesn't look at sample sizes. In 7 atbats, it's possible that Mabry really hits Webb well, or it's possible that he just happened to get 5 hits.
  14. from hearing Hendry talk, the Dbacks would be getting a steal if we traded a "great player" like Izturis for Gonzalez.
  15. Looks like Rusch won't start Thursday, so I guess we can be thankful for that.
  16. stupid Dbacks are wasting Byrnes' power by batting him leadoff. they wish they had Pierre.
  17. It's certainly possible. There are plenty of players who have struggled due to psychological issues. Chuck Knoblauch is the first one that I think of. Rick Ankiel is another. Steve Sax. Maybe Latroy Hawkins, although I sometimes wonder if we just expected him to be better than he really is. Was it Mackey Sasser who couldn't throw the ball back to the pitcher? pretty sure that's correct.

  19. The ball that was hit off his elbow wasn't Dusty's fault. But I really wonder how you think overwork is tied to injuries. I used to think that fatigue itself was a problem, and all an overworked starter needed was rest. The research shows that's not true; fatigue causes a pitcher to change his mechanics, and throwing one pitch with bad mechanics can do irreperable damage. Anyway, it's entirely possible that Prior's injury history means he'll never pitch the same way again, and no amount of rest or passing time will make a difference. We can't arbitrarily say that he should be fine since it's been a few years.
  20. He has absolutely no confidence anymore in his stuff. He lost that in 2003 after Game Six of the NLCS. He's never been the same. Or Dusty pitched his arm off. Take your pick.
