    Excellent move by the Sox. Gives them 6 strong starters going into next year. Now, Williams has the luxury of letting McCarthy mature a little more or even trading a guy during a high value year (i.e., Garland) for another strong position player. In any event, a surplus of high quality pitchers combined with their improved team offense will make them a tough team next year. I hope these moves will put pressure on the Cubs to make their own headlines by taking a risk to get a good player.

    Mueller would be bad at 2nd. He has little range and couldn't turn 2 on any play with an above average degree of difficulty.

    If we want the Cubs to do this, Hendry needs to quickly head off Kenny Williams at the pass. It sounds like the Sox have been flying under the radar, and have offered either Garland or Contreras and an OF prospect for Vasquez, and seem to be the leading contenders to get him. As for Green, he has that limited NTC. It's improbable he'd waive it unless a team picked up his 2008 option. And, I'm not even sure he'd waive it anyway. Last time I looked, Vasquez hasn't pitched very well in the last 2 years. I don't understand why the Sox would even consider trading Garland. Contraras might make sense since his arm probably has more mile than Michelin from the Cuban league. As for Tejada, I don't think the O's would be interested in Vasquez when he hasn't pitched very well in over 2 years.

    Vidro is an excellent player, but I've always been concerned about his long term conditioning. While I think he'll continue to be a good offensive player, I also think there's a good chance he is the second coming of Carlos Baerga, a good player that suddenly declines.

    Maybe it's just symantics. He told an AP reporter that it may be best if he plays somewhere else. But, he never told the Orioles front office "I want to be traded....etc." Hence, no actual trade request. It's like talking to a friend and saying that you want to quit your job, but never actually telling your employer that you quit.

    According to the Washington Post, Tejada told Melvin Mora that he doesn't necessarilly want to be traded, but does want to be traded if the Orioles do not demonstrate a comittment to winning. Apparently, the O's are working hard to convince Tejada to stay and may try to make a couple moves to do just that.

    They are not any closer to competing in that div. than the Fish are. Hill, Williams, Cedeno and a Single A prospect for Miggy and a bit of cash, please. While it's true they are as close to competing as the fish are, it isn't Angelos style to rebuild... particularly with Lopez, Hernandez, and Mora as his top bats. But, the package you propose isn't just prospects since Hill, Williams, and Cedeno are major league ready players. So, the O's just might bite on it.

    I talked to Miguel at a friend's wedding when he was with the Yankees. He loved his stints with the Cubs. He thought Wrigley was the best ballpark in baseball and the fans were the best in baseball...just ahead of St. Louis fans :D He would be an excellent addition since he is a fundamentally sound baseball player and is one of those guys who is absolutely thrilled just to be playing major league baseball. He's willing to do whatever is asked of him and is truly one of the good guys in baseball.

    The only thing I don't like about the Marte acquisition for Boston is that he would be better suited spending another year at AAA and I see him as an Aramis type player that will take about 5 years to hit his stride. By that time, Boston's lineup will be past their prime.

    Given that we always seem to have an outfielder go down with injury for a long duration at some point in the year, Patterson would be a decent insurance policy for all three outfield positions.

    Grow up. That's a serious accusation of someone in the media. People lose careers over made-up stories. He doesn't need to make up a story. All he needs is a completely unreliable source and he'll run with it.

    Wilkerson takes a ton of walks, and he hits for a good deal of power. He plays a serviceable center field. He's no Milton Bradley defensively, but he's better than Pierre. What don't you like about him? AVG? K's? I saw Wilkerson play last year in the nationals games I attended in DC and he had little power (11 HRs in 565 ABs), played poor defensively (the Nats prefered he play corner or first), and he would K a lot in contact situations. While I think he may turn it around a be a solid ball player. He would not have satisfied our need for a leadoff hitter and barely looked better than Christian guzman in many of the games.

    I saw Wilkerson play a lot last year at Nationals games and I'd be hard pressed to say he is a better hitter than too many people other than Christian Guzman. One could say he had a bad year and will rebound, but he he made Preston Wilson look good last year.

    I think he may see what the Marlins are doing and it may be the best way to go. Toronto is loading up so there are 3 teams the O's have to pass. I think this would be a smart move for the O's to make a move toward the future. Granted, smart and Angelos don't go together but they can't compete with the others right now....not even close. I agree that that rebuilding might be in their best interest, but that's not Angelos style. They are pretty close to signing Ramon Hernandez. So, I'd say they aren't trading Tejada anytime soon to pursue a rebuilding phase.

    I think this will average out on those type of slap hits since Pierre is likely to beat the throw on any slow hit ball to the whole even if it is fielded by the infielder.

    To put this in perspective, that's only 4 runs scored behind Furcal and among the best of national league leadoff hitters last year. :shock: As such, it's hard to fault his runs scored.

    The Orioles will not trade Tejada unless absolutely blown away with at least 2 top players. He is the team leader with a reasonable contract for his production. The Orioles are trying to improve their team. They are going after Hernandez and/or Molina as a catcher. (Javey Lopez will be moved over to first.) Angelos is not interested in a rebuilding and realizes that his market is competing with the Nationals and he must field a decent team to fill seats at Camden Yards.

    Now that we have Pierre and don't need a leadoff hitting SS, I think it would be a good idea to bring Nomar back at reasonable salary with incentives. A lineup with Pierre, Murton, Nomar, D Lee, Aramis, Barrett, Cedeno... could be pretty productive

    While it is probably true that the players traded for Pierre could have been packaged with additional players for a better player, isn't that true of any trade where you didn't get the absolute best player on the market? Could they have gotten Abreu for more. Perhaps, but they would have had to assume Abreu's salary. That kind of salary hit would have made it more difficult to make other moves down the road. With respect to Jason Michaels, several of my coworkers are Philly fans and they aren't very positive on the guy and hope someone takes him off their hands. He's older than Pierre with less major league experience, he strikes out a lot for someone without much power, has little speed, and not much of a fielder. Overall, I don't think this is an awesome move by any means, but it appears to be a fair trade that does improve our team. Pierre in front of D Lee and Aramis is a whole lot better than Niefi or Macias batting in front of them.

    I read earlier on MSNBC that Nomar's agent approached the Yankees and said he would play any position, including center. The Yankees apparently have no interest in him for center, but may have interest in signing him if he is still available after they address other needs. apparently, he intrigues tham as a DH/SuperSub to spell any infielder and even maybe a corner outfielder if they have any injuries.

    "Ponson has quit drinking and lost weight" This is the same statement made in the Baltimore Sun every December only to find out that Ponson resumes drinking and 6 meals a day in April.

    There been a lot of discussion of Eyre's value in terms of BB, SO, ERA, etc... But, I really a big factor in his overall value is appearances. He seem to have a rubber arm that can be effective in over half the games played in a year. We all know how Baker can overuse a guy. Looks like Eyre can take that kind of punishment.
