  1. I really wish Dusty would stop the whole righty/lefty match up game. Murton must play everyday. Cedeno must play everyday. They can't learn to hit good major league pitching by only facing certain kinds of pitchers, etc. I like Holly a lot, but the future is now.
  2. There are a few threads regarding coachs to replace Baker if he ever gets fired. I would like to see Joe Girardi at the helm. As for Hendry... Anyone who nets D. Lee and Ramirez in the last few years has job security.
  3. Murton has arrived. The kid gets a walk, single, sac fly, double.... The kid can play baseball. Already seems to know what is needed in the situation. Welcome to the major leagues.
  4. My understanding is that he already went through waivers. In any event, Corey at this point has only used one option of three (prior to yesterday's option) - his MLS (major league service) is currently at 4+. He could be optioned to the minor leagues as long as we secure Major League waivers on him in order to option him down. (Major League waivers are required to option a player once he has attained three years from the time he initially reported to the major leagues.) It looks like the Cubs already got him through waivers and now he only has one option left. Once Corey’s MLS reaches 5 he would need to consent to being optioned to the minor leagues.
  5. I like Wood and Zambrano, but a guy with a high of 14 games won in 6 plus major league seasons and a guy that is too emotional to ever win a big game are not exactly untouchable.
  6. Not that badly...Maddux in the AL (DH, etc.) in a small ballpark.
  7. C Patt should rent Major League 2, he'll have more time to watch on the team bus. He reminds me of Willie Mays Hayes from the Major League films. Remember in Major League 2 that he got a sluggers mentality and started trying to hit home runs all the time, but failed misserably. In the first game of the season when Willie Mays Hayes points to the bleachers, calls a shot, and then flies out to the left field warning track. The next time up, he points again, calls a shot again, flies out again. Then, Bob Uecker mutters, "maybe he was just pointing to the left fielder."
  8. He already cleared waivers. So, if they wont take him for nothing... probably wont take him for something.
  9. Let the kids play... 1. Greenberg -- CF (the kid has plate patience and decent speed) 2. Walker -- 2B 3. Lee -- 1B 4. Ramirez -- 3B 5. Murton -- LF 6. Burnitz -- RF 7. Cedeno -- SS 8. Barrett -- C If Lee is still out, then put Hairston at 2B and Walker at 1B. I think Hairston can play CF and lead off as well, but i'd like to see what Greenberg can do if given the chance. I hate platooning players with lefty/righty combos etc.
  10. Was glad Hendry got him in the Nomar deal...can't wait to see what he can do if Dusty gives him a chance.
  11. The Braves announcers were saying you'd think the Cubs would at least take a pitch with Smoltz struggling with the pitch count. They noted we were playing into Smoltz's hands by not taking any pitches. If they can see it, how come Dusty and Clines can't?
  12. Every team's fans do that. Look at the threads in this forum offering our spare parts for other teams' all stars. Unless Mac can draw walks like he used to give them out, he won't help us where we most need it. I wouldn't mind givng them Dubois strait up. If you project Dubois numbers in the minors he would be among league leaders in strikeouts if he played everyday. Dubois' minor league numbers - 430 Ks in 456 games, a K every 3.8 AB.
  13. I don't think SD would be interested in trading Giles. They paid way to much for him, he still does a fine job, and he is from San Diego.
  14. I agree. SD would be a great destination for him given their needs and their huge ballpark. Petco field will keep some of those long fly balls from going out. I just doubt the Tribune would want to eat much of his contract since we probably wouldn't get much in return anyway.
  15. At the rate we're going, we may be sellers by the All Star break. I only see three guys on the current major league roster as no trade guys if we want to compete in the near future... Prior, Lee, and Ramirez.
  16. More important to me is where Pie is mentally. Corey, in spite of his age, never has matured mentally as a player that can adjust his game. Reports are that Pie has a superb work ethic and listens to his coaches. In this respect, I think he fairs better than Corey. Another important thing to note looking at their numbers is their physical stature. Corey stands 5'9" and shouldn't be trying to hit the long ball every at bat. Pie, on the other hand, stands 6'2" and should swing for the fences more often at the major league level. Some may question whether Corey was rushed... I question whether Corey was ever going to be ready. He just doesn't have the attitude to excel to the next level.
  17. I think we need to look at these players as individuals and not lump them all in as the next Corey. It's clear that Pie probably needs more time, especially coming off an injury. Murton, on the other hand, is a little older (23), played in college, and is known for a high baseball IQ. In other words, Murton is the kind of guy that seems capable of making adjustments and already has a sound approach to hitting and getting on base. Murton's situation is not the same as Corey's. Corey was (is) simply all young raw talent that didn't (and still doesn't) have Murton's baseball IQ. I guess wht I'm trying to say is Murton appears mature enough to handle a callup and recognize that adjustments will have to be made for the majors. Pie may need more time in the minors to handle the adjustments.
  18. I think that he needs to AT LEAST taste AAA. He may get a cup of coffe at the bigs as a September call up, but i really doubt that we see Muton this year. AAA isn't what it used to be. Teams used to play their best up and coming minor leaguers at AAA, now they keep a lot of them at AA ball and use AAA as a practice squad team with the likes of Trenidad Hubbard and Ben Grieves getting at bats.
  19. I don't think we need to trade for a a corner OF either because I think we have the answer in the organization... Matt Murton is the long term answer for Left Field. He doesn't have a lotta pop in his bat, but doesn't strike out much, gets on base, and is fairly athletic. At 23 years old with college experience, he should be ready for the majors this year. It's time to call him up and see what he can do. I do agree that we need to trade Corey. I don't think he has much value other than an Austin Kearns or perhaps a quality middle relief pitcher. We have a tendancy to put much more stock in Corey than the teams around the league who view him as a sure out with a lot of unrealized potential.
  20. Manager - Joe Girardi (Knows players, knows pitchers, is respected, is a winner) Bench Coach - Eric Karros (Class act that recognizes the intangibles) Pitching Coach - Mike Maddux (Better at teaching than his brother) Hitting Coach - Mark Grace (Great approach to hitting, hope he can teach it) 3rd Base - Chris Speier (Seems to be doing a fine job) 1st Base - Ryne Sandberg (Great base runner)
  21. If the Cubs intentionally sit Maddux for financial reasons then they'll have little chance of getting a Scott Boras client. Nor will any decent agent agree that their client sign an option deal tied to performance with the Cubs. So, unethical behaviour would handcuff them in the free agent market place. Sure, they'll find people willing to play for them, but at what cost? Will the Cubs have to guarantee the last year of contracts instead of having options?
  22. Agreed. To intentionally sit a player so an option doesn't vest is completely unethical. If the Cubs did this then no respectible free agent would consider them, they would be subject to grievances, and they would lose the support of this fan.
  23. isn't girardi being groomed to succeed torre? Same as Randolph was being groomed. Yanks wont stand in his way.
  24. Joe Girardi may be a little young, but has the character and smarts to be an excellent manager. He has learned from the best, is a winner, and grew up rooting for the Cubs in Cardinal territory (Peoria, IL). Dusty can manage players, but can't manage a game. I can easily see Girardi doing a good job managing players and the game.
  25. I like the trade from a Cubs perspective, but I don't see Boston easily parting with their premiere kids in a single trade.
