  1. Torres blew at least six games.. as much as I love Tracy as the manager, he screwed up by not putting Capps in as the closer from the get go.
  2. Let me see if I got this straight.. Ryan Theriot is "okay" for a player that is making the minimum salary, but the Cubs need to upgrade down the road? Gee, the guy has solidified the number two spot in the order, plays ABOVE AVERAGE defense in a position that requires DEFENSE first, has provided this club with a spark in the top of the order that hasn't been there since Bob Dernier was in the top of the order many moons ago AND (if that weren't enough) has played his arse off with the intensity that is spreading both on and off the field. Let me clue some of you number crunchers in on something that those of us in the game already know.. sometimes, one must look BEYOND the numbers to see the value of a player. Theriot is that kind of player.
  3. Uecker is in the broadcasters wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame for a reason. The guy is tremendously gifted. Granted, age is finally catching up with him and maybe it is time for Ueck to step aside, but only when HE wants to. The older broadcasters in this game are like the grandfather that comes over for dinner. Sure he's lost a step and maybe he doesn't tell stories as well as he used to, but by God he's earned everyone's love and respect.
  4. I wouldn't necessarily call the Reds and Pirates pathetic. If Capps was the closer from day one, the Pirates are in this race and the Reds do have some solid talent (I know I'd like to have Harang in my rotation and Dunn in my outfield). Having said that, the Cubs are better than those two teams and need to play like it.
  5. IF the Cubs get into the playoffs, its a no brainer.. Soto is the guy. Getting this team into the playoffs concerns me more than the roster. The schedule scares the bejeebers out of me. The Reds have been playing very well, the Bucs have played the Cubbies VERY well and the Marlins have zero pressure on them.
  6. Huntsville got an extra home game in this series by winning both halves. It could come in handy if the Stars win tonight. As far as the "fans" not showing up.. get used to it. Knoxville and the surrounding area is all Vols, all the time. The Smokies are something the "sports" fans in the area support during the Vols "off-season." Rocky-Top is a wildly popular tune with the folks over there (as well as Pringles Park and everywhere else in that state). The fans get jacked up when they hear that tune, that's why it's played.
  7. When I heard the news that Monroe got dealt to the Cubs, my first thought was that Murton's days as a Cub are numbered or over. After thinking about it, I agree with Dude, I think Monroe becomes a terrific guy in a pinch-hitting role and fortifies the bench. As far as who gets shipped out, I think Fox goes back to Iowa. Bottom line is the bench gets better and the team is better.
  8. Keener, I tried out for the job.. finished in second place behind Cory.. it was more sarcasm than anything else.. would have loved to have done that job..
  9. I'll take Ruth over Cobb.. but not by much.. Cobb could flat out hit. BTW, is it just me or does the fifth inning become a snooze fest with the new guy on the radio? Dude sounds as excitable as watching paint dry.
  10. They got an off day before the mighty Diamond Jaxx come to town..
  11. A second baseman playing centerfield?? I like E-Pat and I think he can do well in the majors, but not in the outfield. Anyone who thinks that a career 2B/IF who has played only a handful of minor league games in the outfield is suddenly going to provide the Cubs solid defense at a premium defensive position is out of their flippin' mind. This is a bad decision. Pie needs to be up playing in center regardless of his lack of hitting. That outfield as it stands is a disaster waiting to happen defensively. Dude, what I said might be absured to you.. but the Murton part is the absolute truth "dude"
  12. I never said Pie was in Lou's "doghouse" (geez, what are you people Jay Mariotti schooled?? lol).. he isn't being called up because he hasn't proven that he can hit at this level. I think the desision is a bad one because you need someone to play solid defense, especially at that position. Here is what my lineup would be if I were Lou: Lee-1B De Rosa-2B against RHP, Fontenot-2B against LHP Theriot-SS Ramirez-3B Floyd-LF against righties, De Rosa-LF against LHP Pie-CF Murton-RF Kendall-C
  13. 98, Lou can't just bail on Jones and Eyre because they are on the forty man roster and its also abundantly apparant that nobody else in baseball wants them. Ryan Theriot has never been in Lou's "doghouse" so you can't put him in this discussion. Besdies, Lou loves the kid because he sees alot of him in the-riot. Cedeno has NEVER been given a second chance (but then again he shouldn't because Theriot has been outstanding at SS and is clearly the man over there). All I was saying is that Lou hasn't, and isn't planning on, giving Murton a fair shake because of what happened in April and that is flat out WRONG. I can understand not wanting to call up Pie from an offensive point of view, but Pie needs to be brought up because he is the only guy that can play solid defense in a very defensive-minded position.
  14. Raisin, I swear when I leave this game.. I am going to write a book on some of the things that goes on behind the scenes in this game.
  15. I don't understand why anyone is surprised by this move. Lou is consistent with his managerial style. He is someone who doesn't tolerate failure and in Lou's mind.. A) Murton failed him when he droped two fly balls in April B) Pie failed him because he couldn't hit good enough to stay in the show when given two chances this season You GOTTA love a manager that doesn't give another chance to let someone "wrong a right" (note the sarcasm).
  16. I think it's incredibly ignorant to just assume that any player playing 30 plus years ago would take steroids if they played in this era. Speaking of this era, as much as it is cool to see some really good talent.. the talent in today's game doesn't even COMPARE to the talent thirty and forty years ago thanks to the number of major league teams. With thirty teams and 180 plus farm teams total, the talent is very dilluted. And enough of the "guys are throwing harder" argument. Throwing hard is the single most over rated part of the game. The fact that a person can throw a baseball 90+ is irrelevent in this game if they don't have a slider, curve, screwball or change in their arsenal. Location is something else a "hard throwing guy" needs as well or he gets the crap beat out of him in the show. As far as Ruth goes, he was the greatest player in the game because he could have easily pitched his way into Cooperstown..but having said that, Ruth didn't play against the best in the game thanks to the racist bigotry of Kenesaw Mountain Landis and the other idiots that ruled over this game. It would have been fascinating to see Ruth have his numbers matched or exceeded by Josh Gibson (who might have been just as good or better than Ruth offensively). BTW, I love this website.. you guys are great.
  17. If Soriano is out for four weeks, he won't have an opportunity to play any games in the minors.. the minor league season ends on Labor Day.
  18. Derwood, you hit the nail on the head a few posts ago with the reason why Lou isn't playing Murton. Last week, I had an opportunity to talk with someone in the Cubs organization (God I miss not having the Cubs as our Double-A affiliate). Anyway, this person told me straight up that Murton isn't playing and probably won't be playing anytime soon because Lou is still pissed at him for dropping those two fly balls in April when the Cubs were struggling. I like Lou, but this petty, sophmoric grudge-holding thing is going to cost this team a chance at post-season. Obviously he still holds it when: A) You don't start Murton with a lefty on the mound B) You don't put Murton in the game when Soriano gets hurt C) You continue to use your BEST RF as a freakin' pinch-hitter (in the ninth inning, down five.. basically setting Murton up for failure unless the Cubs score five or six runs)
  19. Ron Potesta: "Here come and the Diamond Jaxx and listen to this crowd!" (Cue Ron Potesta with crowd mic in hand waving it outside the broadcast window, hoping for sound).. Potesta: Yes sir, they REALLY love their Diamond Jaxx here in Jackson.
  20. It's a great place to see and broadcast a game. I just wish the knuckleheads that live in West Tennessee understood how fortunate they are to have a Double-A team. I guss this would be as good as anytime to say this...I recently resigned from the Diamond Jaxx effctive at the end of the season. I'll be trying to find another job in baseball broadcasting, but if I don't.. I will be incredibly grateful for not only having had the opportunity to do this but to have done this for the Cubs organization for four years. I can't wait to get back to Illinois after the Jaxx season is over and get into the pennant race with the rest of you fans.
  21. Peoria, I wasn't talking present persay, I was talking about the rate the Cubs are going with this. Like it or not, Murton is the best player available on this club to play right. Past history (albeit brief) has shown he can hit major league pitching and unlike Floyd, he isn't 135 years old with a gimpy body. Murton was sent to Triple-A to learn how to play right and to get his stroke back. He didn't make an error while at Iowa and hit well over .300 with 5 or 6 homers in a brief stay. I'd say mission accomplished on both ends. I'll continue to say that if he plays everyday, Murton hits .300+ with 20-25 homers, 15-20 steals a year and an average defensive player. I know you anti-Murton folks out there will laugh at the home run numbers, but given the fact that he has a loft in his swing that will produce homeruns, it isn't out of the realm of possibility.
  22. Soul, you hit the nail on the head with Rome and some of other "Rome sound a like" shows. I'll be the first to admit the guy makes a crud load of money and has made it to the top. I'll give him credit for that but nothing else. What bothers me about his show is what you said Soul. Heaven forbid if Rome gets a "real" caller who knows his or her stuff. Rome couldn't hang with anyone like that and the intelligent fans like yourself and most of the people who log on to this website know that. That's why Rome's show is filled with callers who, like Rome, don't go into a locker room or clubhouse. So Rome and his callers know there is no chance that they won't confront the player(s) they rip, so they take the pu**y way out of it by ripping them on a talkshow. Shows like that make me sick.
  23. Jersey.. even in huge markets like Chicago and New York, they take your calls..the difference between the major markets and a smaller like the one where my show originated (I did my show in Youngstown, Ohio which is a top 100 market) is that so many more people are trying to get on and you normally get a busy signal. When you do get on, you only have so many minutes depending on there commercial break. For instance, if caller A gets on the air right after the break he or she has more time then caller B who gets on the air a minute or two before the next commercial break. For me, I put the people who sound great on the air longer because that makes for great radio. Unfortunately, there are people in this business (and I get the feeling management at "The Score" maybe some of them) who feel that putting moronic idiots who have no business talking sports let alone talking sports over the airwaves makes for great radio (BTW, I'm talking about the callers, not the hosts).
  24. As someone who has been a sports talk show host, I can tell you that there isn't a radio station that hangs up on a potential caller. Anyone that calls, gets on the air unless they swear or talk in a threatning way to the producer that screens the calls. Having said that B&B are morons because if you notice, they hang up on anyone who challenges there "authority" on sports.
  25. Don't get me wrong, I like Lou. He's put a fire under this team and for the most part, he does a good job of managing. I just wish he would give this kid a legitimate chance now that the Cubs are playing better. It makes ZERO sense to have Murton sent down to Triple-A with the sole purpose of working on playing right-field and getting adapted to the subtle changes and then have him rot on the bench when he gets back to the majors.
