    Few have said he wouldn't be an upgrade over Hairston. At issue is how much of an upgrade he'd be and what it would likely cost to get him. I'd agree with that - but that doesnt seem to be the general consensus here at all. His numbers this year and in years past show hed be a considerable upgrade in our outfield and batting in the leadoff spot - correct?

    So on the one hand, you don't have faith that CPatt, who is struggling, can turn things around this season, but on the other hand, you do have faith that Juan Pierre, who is stuggling, will turn things around this year. :? Pierre is not struggling, so I'm not too sure what you are referring to. Once again, he got off to a slow start and didnt kick it in until the end of May. Pierre is not playing AAA ball either - nor did he go 0 for whatever in his last stint in the big leagues. Pierre is still playing MLB baseball, still getting on base, and stealing plenty of bases....enough said. Patterson has yet to even get it together in AAA.

    and as I mentioned in a previous post - Pierre got off to a bad start this year - just like many other Cub favorites we all love have done the same thing. He was overworking himself and training too much, and apparently got his act together as his numbers since the end of May have been very respectable.

    I'm sorry, but I just don't understand these comparisons of Hairston to Pierre. That is just plain crazy. Look at the stats and the facts. Pierre would definitely be an upgrade. I, too, would love to see CPat get it going , but how long are we going to wait around for him to get his act together and continue to "hope"? We've been hoping for quite some time now. Meanwhile, Pierre has proven his abilities and has plenty to show for it, including lots of postseason experience and a WS ring. You can't compare Pierre's role on a team to Patterson either. Patterson is DEFINITELY not a leadoff guy and never will be. Pierre is. Personally, Id love to see Cpat find his groove and continue doing what he does best - which is drive in runs and hit the long ball. He'd be a great asset to us in the 6 spot. What if Patteson gets back in the groove and we get Pierre too - that sounds like the sweetest deal to me. Cpat's big bat back in the lineup, and Pierre at the top of the order. Plus, I'd love to see those two speedsters shagging balls in the outfield together.

    Shingo has nothing to back up that ridiculously slow changeup. His delivery is funky and kinda cool - but its either the hanging changeup or a slow fastball with absolutely no movement. So guys are just waiting for that fastball and smacking the crap out of it. I dont think Shingo would succeed in the NL for very long. He may be worth a couple bags of used baseballs, though.

    that must just be a pipe dream on Florida's part....cause I was under the impression that the Skankees made it VERY clear that he's not going anywhere and will be replacing Torre on down the line. Why can't he come to the Northside?

    I thought it was extremely moving and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I love Ron to death, and "this old cub" just added to my feelings more. To hear Brooks say he deserved to be in the HOF meant alot as well.

    Here's the deal with Pierre. He got off to a ridiculously slow start this year and didnt really "turn it on" until the beginning of June. He has a problem with working out religiously, and he spent WAY to much time in the offseason doing so. He had a slight injury at the beginning of the season due to overworking himself....and after some patience and taking it a little easier, hes's back on track to have a great year. He definitely has the potential to steal more bases - and I think with a new team you may see a little more spark from him. The main thing is to keep him from working out so much that he loses gas on the field. I think he'd be a great asset to our team!! He would make a great CF/leadoff guy for us and give Pie more time to develop in the minors.

    Scored some sweet tickets last nite to the Clemens/Carpenter matchup today @ Busch which is apparently sold out. Oughta be one helluva game!! I'll be sporting my cubbie blue proudly and cross my fingers for a cardinals sweep of the stros and a victory from Zambrano today to move another game past the 'stros. :D Interesting tidbit.... In 7 appearances on the road totalling 45ip, Clemens has only given up ONE RUN!! Which yields a road ERA of .20

    one thing is for sure - Woody has looked pretty sharp since his return from the DL. I love the fact that he's got his BB's down considerably, and his motion does look alot less jerky and smoother. Go Wood!!

    P.S. The other thing the papers down there made very clear: the Marlins were very embarrassed about being man-handled by our Cubs. McKeon was even quoted to say that a sleeping giant may have been awoken. The Pirates series is huge for psyche - players, team and ours. I'm confused...was he saying that the Cubs were the sleeping giant, or that the Cubs made the Marlins look bad and it was a wake-up call for them? He was referring to the Cubs as the sleeping giant....hope that is the case.

    2001 was Sosa's best year. Period. McGwire was the better hitter in 1998 - his OBP and SLG were each 80 points higher than Sammy's that year. Sammy's completeness as a player often rested on his speed - that year he was successful on 67% of his SB attempts (18 of 27). The debate over who was the MVP is a fair one, but the debate over who was the better player should start and end with McGwire. I'm not sure that is the case. In 1998, McGwire led Sosa by four homeruns, and out slugged him by 100 points. Sosa had more RBI and a higher batting average. In 98, Sosa was a better base runner and better defender. It was close. If you're talking better career player... :-k McGwire has a career 263 BA compared to Sosa's 277. McGwire has a career 394 OBP compared to Sosa's 348. McGwire has a career 588 SLG compared to Sosa's 545. McGwire has 583 HR's compared to Sosa's 574. McGwire showed more power throughout his career, but if you use a grouping of five best seasons, Sosa looks a little better. McGwire was a decent fielder, while Sosa showed athleticism but had flaws. Sosa was a better base runner, especially earlier in his career. I don't think either one is clearly a better player than the other. Didn't Sosa hit the 583 HR mark last week and tie McGwire?

    Just heard last nite from a diehard cardinal fan buddy that they are adjusting their rotation at the return of the break so that Carpenter, Morris, and Mulder see us the most in our upcoming games.... thought that was very interesting....

    I listened to Dibble go on and on about this today on XM. Then the Yankees fans called in and basicly told Dibble that he was wrong - mentioning Jeter's sub-par defense among many other things.

    Kotsay really wants to stay in Oakland - and I heard earlier today that they're close to agreeing on terms for a 2 year contract.

    I have defended Dusty as well - but I can't take it anymore. He needs to go, or this team loaded with tons of talent will continue to suck.
