  1. If we pass on Furcal, Nomar better be coming back @ SS for certain! However, I think we ruined the Nomar scenario - which means once again we screwed ourselves royally if we don't get Furcal. I'd settle for Bradley/Wilk in CF - what's our RF option then?
  2. Please elaborate how a mere Wilkerson or Bradley addition to this team would be that great of an improvement? I just don't see any difference with an outifeld of Patterson, Wilkerson/Bradley and Murton than we had last year. Also, with no Furcal, we'd be seeing an infield of Cedeno/Perez? Or Cedeno/Perez and Gonzo? I just dont like either one of those scenarios. I think for this team to contend, we need two offensive improvements in the OF, and an offensive improvement in the middle infield. Please elaborate and convince me otherwise :) I'm open to any alternate theories..... THANKS!
  3. Very disappointing news :( Furcal stays with the Braves - and Pierre going to the White Sox. Man, that Sox. And if we lose out on both those guys, count yourself in for a long, turdy season!
  4. Actually, heres' his K/BB ratio broken down from July - the end of the season: July: 17K 11BB August: 15K 14BB Sep/Oct: 19K 15BB I don't see an improvment....maybe his strike/ball ratio improved?
  5. The price tag issue definitely needs to be considered, especially after what moves we've done to improve our offense/outfield/etc - which I consider top priority. And again, don't get me wrong, I was pleased with Williams production as our 5th starter last year....
  6. I agree with the first sentence. There is absolutely NO guarantee Williams will improve, especially when regarding his pitching history.
  7. I was satisfied with Williams production last year as a 5th man, don't get me wrong. But Williams is a far cry from the production of Lowe or Morris at this point in the game. And it's a fact that quality pitching will when you more games than offense. Yes, I think our offense/outfield needs to be addressed first. But, I think both issues could be solved within our budget. And a rotation of: Prior Z Wood (barring a healthy season) Maddux Morris / Lowe .....would be absolutely devastating! Williams as a Cub: 3.91 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 109 ERA+ Lowe: 3.61 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 113 ERA+ Morris: 4.11 ERA, 1.27, 104 ERA+ That doesn't look like a far cry at all. In fact, he was better than Morris. This is what scares me about Williams.... As a Cub: 59k / 44bb You'r also completely disregarding his numbers last year with the Giants, and also disregarding the fact that those Cubs #'s are based on 100 ip's - half of the ip's of Lowe / Morris.

  9. You make a very good point.....they may very well have figured him out by the end of the year and is something I had not considered. I think it possibly had something to do with the fact that he started the season 8-0 and received absolutely no recognition for it - all you heard about was dontrelle and garland, etc.....cause' Morris started the season a few weeks later. Hell, I live in STL, and even the Cardinals fans made no noise about it as well! He's always had the dead arm period towards the end of the year, which is what would worry me the most. Those 5 consecutive losses in September when wins matter the most would definitely concern me. His stats from last year: 14-10 4.11 era 117k 37 bb 1.28 whip I really like that K/BB ratio. His #'s last year are as good or better than Maddux, and I've been perfectly satisfied with Maddux's role. The interesting factor is Morris has been known to give up the long ball numerous times, and last year he only gave up 22 homers through 192 ip's - a DEFINITE improvement.
  10. Morris is damaged goods. We would do best by staying away from him. You actually respect Morris the biggest whiner and the one who said he would throw the Astros games on purpose so the CUbs wont make it to the playoffs in 2003? Interesting. Yes I do :) I don't consider Morris damaged goods either - he goes through a dead arm period every year, but he has bounced back from his surgery very well, imo. I don't think there's a snowballs chance in hell he'd be coming to the northside, though. I also kinda like Oswalt as well - and YES, I've witnessed his hatred for the Cubs on numerous occasions. Bottom line, I respect the performances and could give a crap about the other superficial trash talk b.s.
  11. I would take Morris or Lowe in a heartbeat. I'm a cubs fan in STL and Morris is one of the few Cardinals players I respect.
  12. "The 33-year-old left-hander had received a two-year offer with a club option to stay with San Francisco, but was hoping for a three-year deal and wanted to play closer to his family in Florida. His agent, Tommy Tanzer, said before the signing that Eyre wanted to stay in the National League, though he also had serious interest from the Los Angeles Angels, New York Yankees, Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. Eyre played briefly for Cubs manager Dusty Baker in 2002, and is close with Chicago bench coach Dick Pole. Eyre made a career-high 86 appearances for the Giants in 2005, going 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA in 68 1-3 innings. He struck out 65 batters and walked 26. Several of his Giants teammates -- Noah Lowry, Jack Taschner and Brad Hennessey -- called trying to persuade him to stay. Eyre had been happy in the Bay Area since the Giants claimed him off waivers from Toronto in August 2002. He pitched during the team's World Series run that year under Baker."
  13. I didn't hear that one, but I'm sure you could post a link that I could do so. I did find proof to the contrary from TSN: Not only did he change his mechanics, but his approach. I'll be looking for that ESPN proof. I can't post a link since it was on my XM. I'm sure you guys at the score can call over there and get a transcript. It wasn't a "net" broadcast, so there's no link. I was driving in my car when I heard it. He did go on to say that he has changed his approach, but he was very clear that his mechanics were the same. I heard it as well -I listen to 175 on my XM all day long - K.K. and Dibb's show is my favorite....at any rate, what Vance claims is exactly what Carpenter stated - no change in his mechanics.
  14. Preston Wilson? Are you joking? Id take Murton over Wilson any day..... If Macias is on the roster and Murton isn't - it's nothing short of a joke.
  15. If there was any deal involving the Royals, I'd want Runelvys thrown in there somewhere..... still can't think of any crazy combo of players that could pry Pie from my hands though....
  16. Interesting - well, I wonder if that's attributed to the recent rash of bandwagon fans my buddy was referring to despising. I've seen both teams play in various ballparks throughout the U.S all my life, and aside from Busch, Kauffman, and Florida (due to Spring Training) I have yet to see St Louis fans pour out at other stadiums in numbers that even half compare to what the Cubs bring. They may very well be in the top 5 in road attendance, but there must be a substantial drop after the first 3 teams.
  17. "Talent" and "valuable" are definitely not 2 words I would personally use to describe the Todd Hollandsworth that I have been watching the last 4 weeks. I'll be honest with you Hoops, I think the Cubs are missing a wonderful opportunity and should be sellers. Again, not to the point where they get rid of quality like Lee and ARam but sell the Perez, Holla, Raush, Remmy and maybe Burnitz and CPatt if the offers are right. Teams are willing to overpay and I'd take advantage of that if I were Hendry. I think selling Burnitz would be a BIG mistake. Also, why would be sellers when we are very much contending for the Wild Card, and the trib hs sunk a ton of $ in this team? They're trying to win - not give people away. However, I do see where you are going with the Perez, Holla, Remmy thing - they're all replaceable within our system.
  18. Interesting - well, I wouldn't neccessarily refer to the Cards fanbase as enormous .....maybe in few parts of the midwest and around St. Louis. Take a trip to the west coast and compare the amount of Cubs hats to Cards hats....I lived there for a long time, and never met a single Cards fan - yet ran into plenty of cub fans. On a side note, I was talking to a buddy of mine the other day, who is a life-long diehard Cardinals fan. He was going on and on about he disgusted he was with the "bandwagon" cardinals fans......thought that was mighty interesting. Then, at last weeks matchup at Busch, I spent the entire game sandwiched between 2 ladies talking on their cellphones throughout the entire game. "To say that Cubs fans are more devoted than fans in other cities with equally long baseball history is just self-promotion." - In retort to your statement I would have to say it takes ALOT more devotion to root for a losing team year in, year out than it does to root for one that wins all the time.
  19. How about the fact that we have an uncountable amount of fans, potentially more than any other team in baseball. Also, let's attribute the devotion factor to a team destined for losing year in and year out. or Loyalty? Does that mean anything to you? I guarantee you that if the Cubs were playing Kansas City, there would damn near be a sellout - yet the white sox play them and the stands are STILL empty. Nationwide fanbase. WGN.
  20. True...but it was also almost expected...seriously...someone in the game thread said it, but it deserves mentioning again...how freakin bad is Holly right now that they pitch to him with 1 out and a guy on 3rd...yet intentionally walk Ronny with two outs? Do we have a kangaroo court (to match our kangaroo manager), in which each of these guys gets fined for not getting the runner home from 3rd... that is so very true.....I knew it was coming.....didn't anticpate Blanco K'ing as well, though. Thought he could pull off some contact.....
  21. that was nothing short of pathetic.... :(
  22. Why is Hollandsworth even at the plate in the first place? You'd think after Murton's success thus far, Holly would be strictly coming off the bench.
  23. Gotcha!! I don't get the chance to go to wrigely more than 2-3 times a year....so I wasn't able to say for certain if there were shirts from "our side" knocking other teams - and Wrigley would be the place to find them. Ebay is what gets to me the most, though.....just type in cubs on eBay and every 20 auctions or so is a "cubs suck" shirt, navel ring, beer koozie, etc......
  24. Unfortunately, this isn't something that just popped up this year. For many Sox fans, it's a state of mind. Take a look at a typical Sox fan site, and see how many anti-Cubs screennames, avatars, icons, or sigs there are. Then take a look at a Cubs fan site, and compare. Exactly.... Something else that I find odd.....the numerous tee shirts advertising the "suck" factor for the cubs - distributed by both Cardinal and White Sox merchants. Yet, I've never seen a Cubs shirt knocking another team (not saying they don't exist, but by no means do they exist in a realm even remotely close to the magnitude of the Cub bashing shirts). The Cardinals have many shirts claiming - Cubs suck - "Cursed" - etc. The White Sox have the ever-so-clever whte sox peeing on a cub advertisement, as well as endorising the cubs suck shirts too. Just go to ebay and type in Cubs and you'll find a plethora of shirts being sold degrading the Cubs, yet none for the opposite. Also, how many websites are out there that are soley devoted to Cub trashing? The most ironic thing I find about the "cursed" shirts, which you can find in large quantities by taking a gander around Busch Stadium, is that from a relatively small distance, it just looks like a Cubs shirt.....fools!!
  25. Thank you for an educated opinion. I truly appreciated it!! It didn't have to be this difficult..... :)
