  2. Indeed. It's sad that we are wishing that a 36 year old journeyman would get out of a game. But that's how the Cubs roll against scrub pitchers.

  4. just started an AIM chat room. PM me if you want an invite.
  5. Yes, it is MISERABLE in Jackson, MS this time of year. I can't imagine that there is any other TC that has worse heat problems. 97 degrees and 60-70% humidity is NO fun. When I used to play Legion Ball around this time of year, we'd pour ice into our hats and wear them like that.
  6. 5 votes short, and I have to imagine there were 5 veterans who never bothered voting If they don't vote, their right to vote should be taken away. A voter shouldn't have to vote for somebody if they don't feel anyone's qualified. There have been vet committee elections where there wasn't really a viable candidate. Forcing them to vote for somebody isn't the solution. I believe Mike Schmidt said he never votes for anyone on the VC ballot because, and I'm paraphrasing, "If the writers didn't vote them in, then why should we?" Yes Mike....spot on buddy, spot on. ](*,)
  7. Not that it really adds anything to the discussion, but I really hate the fact that there are 6 teams in our division. Move the Marlins to Portland and put them in the AL West and then move Pittsburgh to the NL East in the spot where the Marlins occupied.
  8. Or me. I get the dreaded red x. Think I fixed it. Fantastic. No problem. I like the picture of him and Aaron the most, from one of Santo's NINE all-star appearances.
  9. Some of the possible negatives against Santo: http://bruce.mlblogs.com/archives/2007/02/the_curious_cas.html

  11. I've searched far and wide for good Santo photos in the past and there just aren't that many on the web and many of the ones that are out there are copyrighted.... http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/ron1.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/ron2.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/ron3.jpghttp://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/ron4.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/ron5.jpghttp://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/ron6.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/ron7.jpghttp://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh153/OleMissCub17/ron8.jpg From the 1972 All-Star game: http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/1171/santoallzv4.jpg Frank Robinson attempting a triple: http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/9303/santofranknv0.jpg
  12. MVP winner and Hall of Famer Joe "Ducky" Medwick was a hell of a ballplayer for a time, but was pretty much a jackass to everyone. From James' Abstract, which has him at #13 All-Time at Left Field: Another interesting thing happened with Medwick in the 1934 World Series that you can see in the video that I put up of Medwick on youtube. During the seventh game of the series in Detroit, Medwick appeared to spike Tigers third baseman Marv Owen on a triple. The Detroit fans (as they do) got rowdy and started throwing things on the field. As a result of this, Commissioner Landis ordered that Medwick be removed from the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8ZsLxSdrzA
  13. almost? i think it's pretty clear he was, and has been. There is a segment of the voting body who just doesn't like the guy *cough*new york media*cough*
  14. It really makes you wonder how someone who, at the time he retired, ranked second ALL TIME in most offensive categories among third basemen, only got 15 VOTES his first year eligible. 15 VOTES!?! It's almost as if he was being colluded against or something.

  16. Did Bill James ever say anything about Rich Hill?
  17. James' entry on Mays as his #1 CF:
  18. James' entry on Cobb as the #2 CF in his Baseball Abstract.
  19. That's an extremely hard decision to make from those two guys. With the way your team is set up, you'd probably want Mays starting in CF because his defensive prowess would make up for any deficiencies caused by Williams and Ruth. However, Cobb was considered to be an incredible defensive player during his era, second only to Tris Speaker. On the other hand, with the amount of brute sluggers on your team, you might want a higher OBP and baserunning wizard like Cobb on your team. Imagine a lineup with Cobb (48 steals on average), Morgan (42 steals), and Wagner (42 steals). Like I said though, it's really an impossible choice because you really couldn't go wrong with either of them.
  20. Williams in the two hole and Mays leading off? I'd have to think that Wagner would have gone better in either of those spots with his speed.
  21. Geo really does look like he wears eye liner
  22. Anyone else think that Morello's voice sounds like Obama?
  23. Aramis' D must have improved four-fold since he has gotten here.
  24. Another neat article from Bill James' Baseball Abstract about which position players are the "nicest". Another neat one:
  25. The record is what, 35 or 36, by Jim Rice? D.Lee has 22 now....so perhaps.
