  1. 1957: Good quality pic of some good players with some crazy names: Moose, Minnie, Nellie, & Mickey:
  2. but...but...he still 100 bases!!!1!1!!
  3. I think David Wright would have been a better candidate than Rollins as well last year. I'm still trying to figure this one out: 1972 NL MVP: Pete Rose: .338/.401/.437, 138 OPS+, 5 HR, 36 Doubles, 8 Triples, 64 RBI, 115 Runs, 10 SB BEATS Willie Stargell:.299/.392/.646, 186 OPS+, 44 HR, 43 Doubles, 3 Triples, 119 RBI, 106 Runs Although, maybe one of the worst ever was 1942 AL MVP: Joe Gordon: .322/.409/.491, 155 OPS+, 18 HR, 29 doubles, 4 triples, 103 RBI, 88 Runs, 79 BB BEATS Ted Williams: .356/.499/.648, 217 OPS+, 36 HR, 34 doubles, 5 triples, 137 RBI, 141 Runs, 145 BB
  4. I'm terrified right about now. I wish I could be more optimistic, but I just can't force myself to. I think I'll be watching every pitch of the playoffs with one eye closed.
  5. It's nuts. It reminds me of 2003 when Texas Tech played Ole Miss and BJ Symons threw for 661 yards and Eli threw for 409. That game was a complete mockery of passing defense.
  6. Who? the correct response is "who dat?" No, I seem to recall having heard of a guy named Deuce who played for the Saints, but I've seen the Saints this year and hadn't seen any proof. Well, they kept him out the first three weeks since he is coming off a knee surgery. He looked pretty dang good today.
  7. Who? the correct response is "who dat?"
  8. OMG, someone get a screencap of "Brewers she-fan crying" to Deadspin.
  9. DEUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!!!!
  10. Croom comes from the old Bear Bryant school of smash mouth football which is about as archaic as writing with quill pens. man, you'd think that you'd be all over that. Naw, when I used to use quill pens I got lots of ink under my fingernails.
  11. Just be glad MSU is a Howry team with a dope for a head coach. Their playcalling is completely moronic. Croom comes from the old Bear Bryant school of smash mouth football which is about as archaic as writing with quill pens.
  12. I wish I was an LSU fan. LSU is the LUCKIEST team in college football history. I've watched them enough over the years to know that a) they are usually badass, but b) are also the benefactors of some incredibly lucky tips, bounces, etc.
  13. LSU should be killing the Dawgs, what the hell is going on?
  14. State's unbelievably and comical offense scores, but only after TWO turnovers. 17-10 Tigers.
  15. State hanging in there against the Tigers so far. I suspect this one will be very ugly before the night is over. However, with the way things have gone so far today, you never know.
  16. oh lord, Texas is destroying the Hogs. I can't wait to see what the Tigers do against MSU tonight.
  17. What's a pity fan? Did I miss something?
  18. HOTTY TODDY!!!!! http://www.gallerysouth.com/gallerysouth/col%20reb%20300.jpg - Harvin is sick nasty. - Stupid playcalling there at the end saved Ole Miss' biscuits. Instead of going for the deep ball they should have just kept doing those 10 yd slant passes. OM had no answer for that. - Dexter McCluster is damn fast. - If the Rebels didn't play like fools and do stupid Howry like fumbling on the goal line against Wake and Vandy, they should be 4-0. - Florida's defense is hella fast - Nutt runs the "wild rebel" too much
  19. LOL....pretty strange topic. Probably damn near impossible to know the answer to your question.
  20. That is just terrible. I guess it explains alot of his strange health issues. He had the chance to be an All-Star caliber player, I think.
  21. Just wanted to have a mini-rant about Rollins winning the MVP award last year. Jimmy Rollins - .296/.344/.531, 118 OPS+ Matt Holliday - .340/.405/.607, 150 OPS+ Watching the talking heads on ESPN shill for Rollins the last month of the season was just bizarre. Rollins wasn't even the best player on his own team. There's no way the Rockies would have gone on their historic run without Holliday, not even close. Holliday was a MOST VALUABLE PLAYER in every understanding of the award. He not only lead the league in RBI and BA (which we know sportswriters love to erroneously gawk at), but also truly WAS the most valuable player to his team. So under both interpretations of what the MVP award is, Holliday should have won. Matt Holliday 2007: BA - 1st in league Hits - 1st RBI - 1st Runs Created - 1st XBH - 1st Total Bases - 1st Doubles - 1st OPS - 3rd SLG - 3rd HR - 4th Jimmy Rollins (who had a terrific year, don't get me wrong) basically put up similar numbers as Curtis Granderson, who was merely 10th in voting in the AL. Rollins Granderson BA: .296 .286 OBP: .344 .368 SLG: .531 .552 OPS+: 118 127 Hits: 212 185 Runs: 139 122 RBI: 94 74 HR: 30 23 2B: 38 38 3B: 20 23 SB: 41 26 And while I'm on this kick, Rollins winning the Gold Glove last year was a joke also. If you look at the defensive metrics like FRAR, Tulo had one of the best seasons of all time last year defensively at SS. In fact, only ONCE (1985) did Ozzie Smith have a better year than Tulo's. But of course, sportswriters could care less about those things.
  22. A legit point. However, which sample size should be studied in this case? Do we use the accumulated effort of a guy who's had a 10 yr career? If so, How much does it matter right now, what Ward produced in 2003, or even 2007? So, since both are likely to see playing time vs RHP, what is the difference between 57 AB to 83? Everyone can look up the numbers difference and see how slanted they are in Hoffs favor. Is that enough to make a statistical based decision? Maybe, I don't know. Where do we place the weight of an additional 290 AB's that Hoffpauir has seen this season when we consider "sample size?" Not to mention the ridiculous numbers those 290 Ab's bore? What of the intangibles? Who's hot right now? I love the idea that Ward is more likely to take a walk in his AB but is that alone worth taking on his anemic performance? Again, I don't know. Who's likely to need a automatic pinch runner, thus burning late extra inning options? Who can play what position? I'm not sure that Hoffpouir completely dominates in these intangibles but he certainly looks healthier. So in sample size, we must consider the timing, players health, players recent performance, and players long term performance. I'm looking up and down these sample sizes and the only ones that make a case for DWard are a year old. Unfortunately it's not 2007 anymore. Great post. Welcome to the boards.
  23. A typical Mississippi fratboy
  24. Cool article and photo from the Chicago Tribune about Lou Gehrig when he signed with the Yankees out of Columbia. Very cool (if for no other reason than to see Gehrig as a pitcher):
