dawson's legs weren't what they used to be by the time he came to the cubs. we all know the stories about the astroturf at olympic stadium destroying his knees. he was once a 25-35 SB/year guy but the most steals he had as a cub was 16 in 1990.
what makes pca's jump from all-star CF who can hit 30 home runs and play god-tier defense to an all-around MVP caliber player is his ability to take a walk. yes, he strikes out a lot (178 strikeouts coming into today) but the walks are what really made him go from great to supernova. dawson always had a low on base percentage since he did strike out a lot more than he walked (in his mvp season, he only walked 32 times).
in regard to game-winning RBI: RBI is heavily dependent on team performance. where did dawson hit in the lineup? 3rd or 4th (97 and 54 games, respectively). who was hitting in front of him most of those games? dave martinez (.372 obp), ryne sandberg (.367 obp) and manny trillo (.367 obp). you'll be more likely to have a higher RBI total if the guys in front of you are on base. PCA's RBI count isn't close to dawson's since PCA hits first in the lineup. i'm sure someone here can find the exact obp for the number 8 and 9 hitters for the cubs this season but i don't think they'll be close to what dawson had in front of him in 1987.
no one is knocking what dawson accomplished in 1987...dawson is the horsefeathers and i'm glad he won the mvp since he was a cub. but what PCA is doing this season is much more impressive than dawson's mvp year. again, that's not watering down his accomplishment at all. it's that pca is putting these numbers up at a premium position and has taken his offensive game to the next level.
