  1. I think Colorado may fall completely out and Calgary/Detroit may be the 8th seed. I watched some of the Sharks/Oilers game and oh my, Sharks are completely lost right now. What exactly is failing for them right now? Just a bit of everything or one specific area? Well when you lose 6 in a row there is usually multiple issues. It was hard to say since Edmonton is not exactly a playoff caliber team. Things I noticed. Bad goaltending, defensive lapses(amazed how often Edmonton had guys in front of the net without a body on them), low intensity, when there was a puck on the boards you just felt like Edmonton came out with it every time. The Sharks have no confidence right now. I know I just watched one game but they look much worse then the Hawks at this point.

  3. I think a reason many people paint these types of trades as either/or is because that is usually what they are with the Cubs. When was the last time the Cubs traded a player in his prime that still had some sort of value to the team? I honestly can't think of any at the level of Theriot. DeRosa? that was a sell... I should have put more parameters on my statement. One that came to mind after I posted was Lee Smith for Nipper and Shiraldi edit: actually it probably does fit tims criteria since it did lead to other moves that were supposed to make the team better. I am not sure DeRosa was in his prime though

  5. I dont think anyone can compete with the Yankees financially. I do believe it is possible to market your team in almost any other market to become a large or small market team. A couple of examples off the top of my head are teams like Toronto and San Diego. In the last 20 or so years they have played on both sides of the fence
  6. The Cubs will win fewer ballgames in 2010 if Blanco/Barney is their everyday SS rather than Theriot. For all the Theriot hate on this board, I have a hard time believing anyone would disagree with that. Now if you're a sad-sack club like the Royals or Orioles or whatever, then maybe you'd trade a few wins this year for a nice prospect that might help you down the road. However if you're the Cubs, you'd be more inclined to do the exact opposite -- trade prospects for an upgrade that will net more wins now. This is why the original notion that Theriot could be traded and replaced by Blanco/Barney is silly and pointless. How many games do you think Theriot is over Blanco/Barney? If I had to put a number on it, I'd say three. I agree that this whole debate is pointless because Hendry/Cubs are not going to trade Theriot. I do believe though that a player who probably is at the peek of his trade value right now should not be considered untouchable if at the most he worth is 3 wins this season. If good value can be had in a trade it should be considered.

  8. I don't have a big opinion one way or the other about trading Theriot. Mainly because I think the Cubs probably value him more than the rest of MLB. However, I do agree that trading Theriot would not eliminate the Cubs from contending this season. I also ran into this either/or concept when I thought the best move would be to trade DLee this off-season. There seems to be this idea that good players being traded is always a fire sale move. Is it not possible to trade players who will probably never have higher trade value then they do now to improve your team?
  9. I didnt watch the whole game last night, but what I did watch I thought the Hawks did a great job of not having defensive lapses. Almost like they were over compensating for injured dmen and bad goaltending. I think this style may look sluggish, but might be the best remedy to get their confidence back.
  10. I didnt here what Bernstein said, but honestly what little I have heard hockey talk on the Score it is generally dumb. However, having a goon would not have stopped either of these recent hits on Hawks players. Campbell's hit was just a fluke injury after a pretty common hit. Seabrooks hit was a response to what Wisneiski thought was a dirty hit by Seabrook, Wiz was actually playing the goon. I personally feel that the NHL could easily reign in cheap shots and goon tactics with making all head shots illegal and then consistently suspending players who violate that rule. However, they often listen to a vocal group of fans who think the goonery is a key part of the game.
  11. Yes you are. What do you think a Chicago sports talk station is going to talk about? Former well liked Blackhawk gives ex-teammate a cheap shot, injuring one of our starting defensemen one game after another player who plays the same position is injured by another semi-cheap hit, or Blackhawks player gives another teams player a cheap shot and other player is left uninjured. I was listening to the Score all day and I never heard one person even put the hit in context. Not until I watched the video myself did I see what Seabrook did to initiate his hit. Was Wiz justified in doing so? No, but it definitely played a part and any good sports talk host would have at least mentioned it. yeah, it really got the conversation going the wrong way also. There ended up being a lot of talk about how the Hawks need a good enforcer. Which is really out of context of what happened last night
  12. byfuglin is playing d? or is it just the pp? I just tuned in so not sure
  13. Listening to the Score this morning for about a half hour, there was not one mention of Seabrooks hit on Perry. They kind of painted Wiz as a cheapshotter with no reason. I am not taking sides, but at least give the whole story.
  14. I am pretty sure that managers are at will employees and are not covered by the collective bargaining agreement
  15. I'd be panicked if my team had the best record in hockey last year and lost in the first round too. You are going to worry about everything until you get over the hump. Hawks fans are panicking becuase they are Chicago sports fans, who in general, panick about everything and anything. Yeah, truth is the until 97 the Wings were similar to the Sharks. I wonder if what the Sharks need is an enemy, like the Avs became for the Wings, to motivate them to get over the top.
  16. I read through a Sharks board this morning. Bad Goaltending, defensive breakdowns, bad coaching, oh know Detroit is going to kill us in the playoffs. Sounded familiar
  17. probably play the point on the 2nd PP unit
  18. And most of the opinion I've read was that it wasn't warranted. I agree. I hate it when the NHL looks at the outcome of a play to decide the punishment. No question, if Campbell had gotten up and not been hurt, Ovie would not have been suspended. That's ass backwards. I understand that sentiment, but I don't understanding how people can claim that wasn't a dirty hit, and that sort of thing shouldn't be punished. You shouldn't be able to shove a guy from behind into the boards. There's plenty of opportunity for big clean hits throughout the game, and any claims that this is a softening of the game is nonsense. Also, I have to say I don't have a problem with the punishment depending on the severity of the results of your actions. It happens all the time in all walks of life. You want to play like a jackass, well, you are going to be liable in some way shape or form for the consequences of your actions. Do you think Ovechkin's history played into it as well? I don't watch him all the time, but from what I understand this isn't the first time for him. If the Hawks would have won the game I bet you it would have only been a 1 game suspension also. I don't think it is that hard to come up with a consistent punishment system for these types of incidents.
  19. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Bertuzzi#Steve_Moore_incident I am not defending Todd Bertuzzi. It just seems odd that a similar hit to Markus Naslund was the initial blow in the Todd Bertuzzi incident. The NHL still hasnt learned how to clean up the douchbaggery
  20. I agree that there is no need to panic. Campbell is way overpaid, but he is a real good 3rd dman. So I think he will be missed, especially since there is a huge drop off in quality after Hjarmalsson. But as long as he is back by the 2nd round it shouldnt be an issue. I think if Blackhawks fans should take note that many of the top teams are not exactly cutting a rug right now. I think these are the types of spells that real Stanley Cup contenders will be able to work themselves out of. If the Hawks dont overcome it, they were probably just pretenders all along.
  21. Yes. Because it's not a month from now. These things ebb and flow pretty much constantly, and yet people always convince themselves that they can make some sort of sense out of it. Every year in every sport, some teams play like crap for the end of the regular season and are then awesome in the playoffs, and vice-versa. As far as I can tell, there is absolutely no correlation. From Dec. 22 to Feb. 24 of last season, the Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins went 9-14-3. They played like absolute crap for two full months. And then what happened? They turned it around for no rhyme or reason. coaching change, Gonchar returning, and a couple of savvy moves at the trade deadline...not exactly no rhyme or reason
  22. I think the George Bell signing was probably the best FA signing in Cub history.
  23. http://communities.canada.com/EDMONTONJOURNAL/blogs/hockey/archive/2010/03/10/the-best-of-quot-chris-chelios-is-so-old-quot.aspx a couple of pretty funny ones in here to go along with many lame jokes. all kidding aside, I think it is great that he is still playing at 48. Some people in Detroit think that the Wings may not be missing what Chelios did on the ice, but miss what he did in the weight/locker room.
  24. where was the 2nd baseman going right at the beginning? it looked like he was getting the hell out of dodge
  25. the loss is probably bigger then the win against the Hawks. I think it is time to admit that the Wings are missing something this year. I think a big part of it is teams just do not fear them. In years past when teams go behind the Wings they probably had a feeling that it was over. Clearly not the case anymore.
