  1. Is he going to be better than Murton though? Since neither can play another position I would rather go with Murton.
  2. I looked at some things this morning and find no mention of Arrington being out. I read a few places that he comes from 30 miles from Iowa City and went to Michigan because of the Fab Five. I wondered if it was the money or the clothing style
  3. I really liked your stuff here tiger. The only part that I was wary of was your assertion that we should get CLee instead. I dont think he will have a higher OPS than Murton in 2 years. If you take away Sorianos career year last year he just doesnt have numbers that would warrant a really large contract. Since the Career year happened at the age of 30, we should really be careful
  4. Bottom line Pierres 2 main assest Batting average and SB are offset by poor OBP and Caught stealings. He is AT BEST an okay defensive CFer. This is not enough to make up for being such a bad offensive player. I have said it before and will say it again. He is Omar Moreno at best.
  5. He doesn't "track" well. Whatever the hell that is. He relies on his speed. He breaks late to the ball and makes up for his late start with his speed. He often takes bad routs to balls. Because of this when he catches the ball he is rarely in a good position to throw the ball, altough that is not too big of a problem with his arm. He's never been a "great" CFer and rarely exhibits "good" CF skills. I don't know who you've been whatching in CF but it hasn't been Pierre. You don't know what "tracking the ball" is, but you claim to know that Pierre makes bad starts on the ball? Come on. I seriously wonder if some of you guys even watch the games (on tv or in person) or just follow the numbers and rip on players b/c it's popular. There certainly doesn't seem to be much baseball playing experience here, from the ridiculous claims some people make. I do watch games and this is how I know he doesnt get good jumps or follow a straight line to get to the ball. Defense is hard to put stats on. You dont have to watch a lot of baseball to realize that Pierre doesnt get to balls that Jim Edmonds, Aundrew Jones or Mike Cameron get to though.
  6. As I mentioned earlier if you look up ESPN stats for CFers Pierre is easily one of the 3 worst regular CFers in offensive numbers. It is nonsense to bring him back for even 4 or 5 million. Felix Pie would put up at least as good offensive numbers for the league minimum. As for the defense, I dont know what to say except Steve Stone kept on trying to tell us that Randall Simon was a good 1b a couple of years ago. Just because some baseball people say he has good range doesnt make it so. I know that Range Factor isnt a good stat but Pierre was at the bottom of the league at that. There has to be something to that. He doesnt get a good jump and takes a bent path to the ball usually. This to go with his weak arm. I will concede this. He probably isnt in the bottom quarter of defensive players in the NL, he certainly isnt the best though. He is without a doubt one to the worst regular cfers in all of baseball offensively.
  7. I thought after the Hockey owners showed how to force a salary cap, the baseball owners might actually stick it out for the long haul. I guess they arent losing as much money as they once suggested.
  8. I should look this up by my guess is that over 75% of free agent pitchers arent "worth" what is paid for them. If you are going overpay money to bring in starting pitching, Jeff Suppan wouldnt be a bad pickup. Eats innings, good control and stays healthy. Very good 4/5 starter. Good 3/4. Personnally I would rather overpay him than Jason Schmidt. I am not saying Suppan is better, just wont cost has much and Schmidt has been fragile lately.
  9. This is a terrible post. Fact is he doesn't get on base, and he gets himself thrown out too often when he does. He stunk in 2005 and wasn't good in 2006. You know, all of us could sling around insults. It is a terrible post. Just claiming he is a good defensive CFer and Gets in pitchrs head is not a good post. Than to say dont throw stats around to dissprove how terrible my post is. He also called the post terrible, which is seperate from the poster. Its no different than saying Someone is a terrible President, Teacher or any other profession. It is seperate than the person. If I was to say my friend was a terrible BB player, that is correct. It doesnt make him a terrible person though. If he is to thin skinned and takes it personal that is his problem not mine or he is really dilusional.
  10. I am not sure what to address. He was probably one of the worse leadoff man in the NL. He gets in pitchers heads so much that he was caught stealing 20 times. We play a whole season not just post all star game. Boston Red Sox won WS 2 years ago with no speed at the top of the order. Neither Detroit or St Louis has a good basestealer at the top of order. Pierre isnt in the top half of defensive CFer in the National league. Speed isnt the only thing in range. Good jump and taking a straight line to the ball are even more important and since Pierre is poor at both of these he really doesnt even have good range. So just about everything you posted was not correct. By the way I didnt use one stat to show this except caught stealing.
  11. That argument is as ignorant as when "old time baseballers" flat out deny the statistical side of the game. You have to look at both. I just happen to think putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out would have been the better move. It may tighten Wainwright up a bit more, having never pitched in a situation as big as last night. He was throwing very well though. I wasnt saying that bunting in its self was the wrong play. I was just commenting on the reaction that I have heard today on the Radio. I said that the chances of scoring were probably close enough both ways that the decision just looks bad because it didnt work. Than I said if he did bunt and than the next 2 guys KO would he be criticized today for that not working. This is where I pointed out the oldtimers using this as an isolated example of there philosophy working or the statiztical stuff not working. Truth is if he did bunt and it didnt work you wouldnt be hearing a thing about it today on the radio or ESPN. Just for the sack of helping the discusion does anyone have the probabilities of scoring 2 runs with runners on 1 and 2 and noone out and runners on 2 and 3 with 1 out. I am guessing that the first one is better but not by some huge margin.
  12. I was looking at all CFers stats listed at ESPN. They had 20 listed. Of the 20 Pierre easily is in the bottom quarter of offensive cfers. I would have rather had ever other one except for Willie Taveras and Chone Figgons and its not like Pierre is really better than these 2 either he just isnt clearly worse then them. Here is the real kicker. Pierre is probably worse lead-off man of the group also. Remarkably someone may pay this guy 10 million a year because he was better after the All-Star break. People ask my why I would avoid free agents.
  13. I think this is a situation that if he gets a hit Randolph is a genius. I dont know what the statistical probabilities are either way but I am quessing it is close. If he would have bunted and both Reyes and La Duca KO would he be criticized for that. I think this is just old time baseballers using a isolated incident to show that statistical analyst stuff doesnt work.
  14. This is all about right on. I also like that you pointed out about missed opportunities at this years trade deadline. Also to find out we may have gotten a good prospect from the Dodgers but we held out for Iszturis. The Cubs also had a Top Ten minor league system when he took over and now have a bottom 10.
  15. Yeah I was using 106 becuase that was what was previously posted. This is a prime example of how RBI's can be overrated as a stat. I am guessing Dave Stapelton would have driven in over 90 if he was the everday starter at 1b and batted 3rd.
  16. I have some Baseball Abstracts(Bill James original format) from the 80s. I am not sure they are worth anything but I flip through them sometimes. Its amazing how many stats he created that havent caught on with Sabermatricians.
  17. Buckner drove in 106 runs batting behind Wade Boggs and Marty Barret. Boggs had a .450 obp and I am pretty sure Barret's was above .350. Buckners offensive performance in 1986 was way overrated. I should look this up before I shoot of my typing but I am guessing his OPS wasnt even close to .800
  18. I really think it is a legitimate statement that they are the best 2 teams. Isnt the goal of the BCS to get the best 2 teams in the championship game. I know that isnt really true but just a thought
  19. I was talking to some guys at work today and someone brought up a couple of possibitities for the Championship game. What if OSU beats Michigan and everything falls in place for ND to play OSU in the championship game or what if Michigan beats OSU and everything falls in place for Texas to play Michigan in the championship game. I guess what I am saying is it possible for ND to pass a 1 loss Michigan team or Texas to pass a one loss OSU team. Of course this is all contigent on both Michigan and OSU going undefeated until there game and probably USC beating Cal and ND beating USC. Lousiville, West Virginia and Rutgers would have to split there games with each other and somehow both Auburn and Florida lose. If Michigan was to lose like 21-20 at OSU would it be possible for them to stay ahead of some of the other 1 loss teams besides ND and have a rematch for the National Title. I know it seems like every year at this time there is talk of the BCS being screwed up, but it would be screwed up if ND went past a 1 loss Michigan team or Texas went past a 1 loss OSU team.
  20. Have you watched Tigers? Polanco is batting 3rd with Monroe(who cant bunt) batting second. I know this has only been for a couple of games but I think it goes to show how important Leyland really thinks sac bunts and stuff like that are.
  21. As a fan of a Big Ten team that is not OSU or Michigan and has already been beaten by both teams, I hope they do go on to be undefeated. I hope one of them wins the National Championship and the other ends up #2 after winning the Rose Bowl or whatever BCS bowl they go to. I have a hard time with fans of Penn St thinking that their school is somehow superior in some sort of way to these 2. I understand disliking them because they beat you every year, But to think that Penn St is somehow above some of the stuff that goes on at Ann Arbor or Columbus is silly.
  22. I was at first against the hiring of Lou Piniella. I still think that he isnt that great of a hire. However the reason that I was against him was that he got a reputation of being poor with young players. I think however he may have been labeled that way because of his tenure in Tampa Bay. He certainly shouldnt be in charge of team that is filled with young players however he has given quite a few players their first significant playing time in the Major leagues. I wouldnt say that young players are his first choice but he certainly has a lot better track record than Dusty.
  23. Can they make roster moves before the World Series. If they can I would bet a little sum of money that Neifi is not on the WS roster so they can put Shelton on.
  24. I dont keep up with the day to day running of the Oakland As, but it seems to me that Macha has done a pretty good job there with what he has had.
  25. I think Troy Smith winning the Heisman is going to be tied into Ohio St going undefeated. There isnt a dominating candidate out there so they are going to reward Smith with a lifetime acheivement award if OSU goes undefeated. If Michigan beats OSU I think Henne/Hart or Manningham may get into the picture but Quinn will probably win as long as he keeps on putting up good #s. With Peterson and Wolfe probably out of the running this may turn into one of the most interesting Heisman votes ever. I have a feeling Bristol University is going to start promoting someone else here in the next couple of weeks. Probably Rutgers rb(Rice) or WVU qb or running back.
