Week 15: Saints (7-6) @ Bears (7-6) 7:15 PM NFLN/WPWR LOCAL
NOLA replied to UMFan83's topic in Other Sports
I've been busy lately and the Peavy thread has taken all my spare time, but aren't Duece, Grant and Will Smith out for the season after losing the appeal? If so, Sedrick Ellis better have a monster game. Perfect Saints irony: New Orleans loses after getting steamrolled by a Tulane product-Matt Forte. That all said, when the hell are the Saints actually going to play the Bears in the Dome? Seriously?!? Yes OMCub, I agree. That is always how the Saints lose. See the missed extra point on the last play of the season in 2004. -
Rocket arm no really like flames come off the ball, more mobility and speed than you would think for a guy his size, not a statue in the pocket like John Navarre. Can make all the throws but was inconsitent at times. For a true freshman i though he played well but needs work which is to be expected. Thanks. Apparantly he is lighting it up on the scout team while he sits out. Now if only LSU could keep a quarterback who's good and stays out of trouble.

I understand that's likely what they're trying to claim, but if they truly wanted a better character coach they would have hired almost anyone else. The problem with that is that it in reality, Nutt was fired because they just wanted him GONE. Even the most diehard Hog fan will tell you that their planning was poor, to put it mildly. But that is how bad thay wanted him gone, and to tell you the truth, both sides needed to go their own way. The Petrino hiring came much later down the road after a few job offers. At that point they just wanted a head coach, and yes, he is a good coach even with the baggage. It was not meant to be a good character hire to contrast Nutt, it was to hire ANYONE else. Honestly, you can ask alot of Arkansas ppl and they will tell you they are glad Nutt is gone no matter what the record would be this past season. OK, there's a Louisiana perspective on the Arkansas Razorbacks. That they wanted him gone sounds a lot more plausible than the were looking for a coach with more character and hired Petrino. It's still a dumb reason (much like Tennessee fans wanted change for the sake of change with Fulmer), but at least it's plausible. Again, 2 separate issues. Nutt's very questionable actions and just the whole fiasco had burned plenty of bridges with fans and administration. No way to fix the damage, so he gets fired. Fans would not have stood for another year of Nutt. OK, again...anyone got the scoop on Mallett?

"he is a shifty, shifty guy." "tease every year with job openings at other schools." "Slip out of Atlanta in the dead of night leaving only notes behind to tell your players that you've left two days after guaranteeing to your owner's face that you won't leave midseason" Oh you won't hear me defend Petrino's character at all. I'm just talking about Nutt and that whole firing. I will defend Petrino purely as a coach, and I think LSU and Bama will have some competition in a couple of years. IMO, Petrino sorta fell into Ark's lap after a shoddy coaching search. He is a good coach, and UA put blinders on to the rest and hired him. They just REALLY wanted Nutt gone and then REALLY needed to name a head coach when they hired Petrino. Petrino has his own issues, but Nutt is a crazy mofo and NOT a great guy. OK, Big Ten guys: How good is Ryan Mallett...seriously?

it probably depends on who they bring in to replace him, but i don't think tuberville will be out of a job for long. Go 47-16 over the last five seasons and you lose your job. Compare that to Miss. St's reluctance to fire Croom after he went 21-38 over that same time span (and 8 of those 21 wins came in one year!). First of all OleMissCub on your sig pic-trust me, I feel your pain. I'm telling you, alot of ppl are rumbling about Tuberville to Miss St. That would be bad news for Oxford I think. While I believe that firing Tuberville was a big mistake, you cannot really compare Auburn and Miss St the last 5 years. Auburn is a traditional power with SEC caliber facilities. Miss State 5 years ago when Croom was hired was in a black hole, coming off bigtime probation from the Jackie Sherrill days. On top of that, it's Starkville, MS. I realize we will not agree on Houston Nutt probably, but what is the consensus around there about him? I saw how recruiting is going...Ole Miss 58th?!? That was a huge knock on him at Arkansas. Nutt shouldn't have been fired. However he recruited there, he won. A lot. If he weren't really recruiting all that well and was struggling to win each year, fine. But he was winning at a high level (10 wins his final season at Arkansas). Here's the thing about the Nutt firing, and I am an LSU fan before a rabid Arkansas fan. His firing had much less to do with wins and losses than his character. I will agree that some of the nonsense floating around last year was ridiculous, but he is a shifty, shifty guy. He continually threw players under the bus to deflect bad attention from himself. He would continually toot HIS own horn and tease every year with job openings at other schools. Whether or not you agree with either side of the whole Mitch Mustain affair, Nutt and his wife behaved in a completely unprofessional, vindictive manner in the way the press was used to demonize the 19 year old kid. He publicly called Peyton Hillis a "cancer in the locker room" right before the NFL draft. Hillis only came back from a broken back, a leg injury, and a change of position to go on to gain 128 yards with the Broncos last Sunday. Clearly, I dislike the guy as a coach, but he is not the great man ESPN made him out to be after the fallout. Wins and losses do NOT tell the story there.

You're right, he will. Miss Sate has been in touch all day apparantly. All the rumors here are Mike Leach to Auburn. Presser tomorrow! If AU were smart they would go hard after Charlie Strong. IMO, Leach will not win in the SEC, but then again the SEC is changing.
-
I have my own personal thoughts on the Nutt situation, but will spare you. He is a snake oil salesman. As for TT and Auburn vs Bama, it's what have you done for me lately. The SEC is ridiculously competitive. The hot coaches/teams in the league now are Meyer at FLA, Nutt at Ole Piss, Saban at BAMA, and Petrino at Arkie. Auburn, Tenn, South Carolina are sorta stale news these days. LSU even has been down on Les Miles since Day 1. It's all about keeping up with the Joneses, and in the SEC it is dog eat dog. Sorta sick, but then again that is why it is consistently great.
-
I only follow the SEC closely, but I can tell you that there are some serious back door dealings in this part of the football world. The boosters have always hated Tommy T, and now that Bama is back to national prominence, enough was enough. AU vs. Bama is a HUGE rivalry. Also, TT was always flirting with other jobs (see Arkansas, Clemson, Nebraska, etc). It's the same reason (among many others) Arkansas soured on crazy ass Houston Nutt. Again as I said in the previous post, don't be surprised if TT goes to Miss St.
-
BTW from SEC country, big news swirling all over that Tubberville is GONE from Auburn. AU officials met with reps for Bobby Petrino at Arkansas and Leach from Texas Tech to gauge their interest. Petrino said absolutely NO, but Leach said he would be very interested if the job became open. Finebaum on his radio show down in Bammer says that prompted Auburn to give the pink slip to Tommy T. Also more questionable sources say Tubberville is thinking about Mississppi State. As the SEC turns... http://blog.al.com/spotnews/2008/12/tommy_tuberville_is_out_as_aub.html

ALCS: Rays Win Game Seven 3-1, Defeat Red Sox 4-3

I didn't mind Chip so bad when he was here, but he is really annoying. When the hitter hits a flare to shallow outfield, he keeps saying that the ball is getting "fisted" for a hit. Ahem. Reminds me of "a laser to the left field gap!" Just plain goofy. -
WHO DAT! Just wanted to pump my chest a little for the Saints fans. This time last week the city was evacuated. Still alot of folks without power, yet nearly every seat was filled. And to think they wanted to move the team to San Antonio or LA! Yes I am biased, but Saints fans freakin' rock!

R.I.P. Felix Pie's Career (2001-April 20, 2008)
NOLA replied to KingCubsFan's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
You make the board rules, am I right? You could change it. I don't think it makes it less interesting. Overreaction and hyperbole is in many Cub fans' DNA. I dare say the majority, actually. This one, however, is a on a level that's beyond what most would say, even me in my worst Cub doldrums. Wow. The thread title was supposed to be a joke. Considering how serious most people take this board, it doesn't surprise me that so many people caught feelings. Delete the thread if you want. What this board really needs is more Theriot grit jokes, condescending posts towards anyone who doesn't worship Baseball Prospectus, Hendry fat jokes, and remarks about sportswriters. Dude, I am so there. Got ya covered! -
Yes, I am a homer, but Chris Paul just owned the Mavs Saturday night. I think to overlook NO in the west this year would be a huge mistake. They play GREAT defense, have an MVP type at PG, a strong inside presence and they have vets who can hit the three. The Mavs are soft. BTW, I do like the Bulls, and you guys would do well to get Avery Johnson (St. Augustine High School-New Orleans grad) as coach. It's not his fault the Mavs' superstar is soft and there is no inside game. What the heck happened with the Bulls this year?

This one, however, is a on a level that's beyond what most would say, even me in my worst Cub doldrums. Bitterness and vitriol toward some players make it less interesting to me. There are a couple of players I dislike on this team, but I do not pretend to have an absolute knowledge of how they will perform this season. One extreme: the stupid Cubs "fan" in the bleachers who just wants to see and be seen and talk on his cell. The other extreme: one who gets so bitter about a few players even during a redhot streak. -

I gotta say you always have a sense of perspective I appreciate. I couldn't agree more. People here can always find a way to see things in a bad light. It is ONLY 4-20. While Felix is struggling for now, we are getting great production from a CF that we picked up off the trash pile. The ace of the Brewers is ailing. Our big question marks in the rotation are holding their own. Kerry Wood has been lights out as our new closer. The Cardinals are starting to remember that they stink, and we are in first place with Soriano on the DL and Aramis off to a slow start. Our offense is exploding and Rich Hill is starting to come along. Yet some continue to gripe, hoping Theriot (.338) and RJohnson (.354) fail so we can get our real prospects in there. Personally, I like to win games and be in first place. Pie will get his ABs in blowouts until he starts swinging better. There, I feel better. Also, the whole Grit thing is mildly amusing, but he did have 6 total bases, 2 rbi, a steal and and great slide to break up a double play in the big 5th innning. Start him until he sucks, as some think (see hope) he will. -

I'm with you. Let's move forward. It's like all the Saints fans who still gripe about Ditka all the time. I sort of though he fit in nicely down here... -
Winner winner chicken dinner!! I also have been thinking this. Plus, you said "more gooder", which is pretty nice. If only Pie could start figuring things out... 1 Pie 2 Fukudome 3 D Lee 4 Aram 5 Soto 6 Soriano 7 Dero/Fontenot/Theriot 8 Cedeno/Theriot Sweet!

I can't believe someone already got the Saints before me. I am in though.

They're cut-blocking cheap-shot artists, their former CB ran his mouth off to Steve Smith all the time, their former dog-murdering QB had magical powers against my team to the point where he literally levitated 5 yards across the goal line for a game-winning TD that kept us out of the playoffs in 2004, and on top of that Delhomme got his season-ending injury against them last year. Apart from that, they're alright. Yep, you said it all right there. From Neon Deion to DeAngelo Hall, the birds have always been a "me first" group of individuals. The whole "Free Mike Vick" t-shirt thing on MNF didn't surprise me in the least. They run a good coach out of town in Mora Jr, and they hang dogs or support people who hang dogs. My least favorite Saint ever Joe Horn fits right in with them. Everytime the birds play in the Superdome, their fan base of 25 people arrive and act like trash. All my bartender friends in the Quarter hate ATL weekends. MC Hammer did a video featuring the birds, and they adopted that horrible "2 Legit to Quit" thing. The Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert left us to go to there, as did Morten Anderson. They can't even sell out Braves playoff games, and the only reason they come close are opposing fans like us. You go out in ATL on a Tuesday night and everyone's dressed like they're about to go to an LA club. The cheesyness oozes out of that city. But I did date a girl from Athens awhile back. She was cool. I meant just the falcons not atlanta. Michael Vick was their leader for 4 or 5 years. If Manning or Brady did something just as heinous their teammates would have supported him the same way. Mora Jr. was a good person not a good coach. Plus, Mora Jr. was a player's coach and more or less let the "me first" attitude continue. No arguments about Hall or Vick. You can't judge a fanbase over 25 fans. The Cubs' fans have a bad reputation because of this sensation. Yeah, I was just making a joke (sort of) about the whole ATL thing. There are bad fans in every bunch. I've seen LSU fans be terrible at games, and I have friends who say they will NEVER go back into the city of Chicago after that NFC title game 2 years ago. I just like giving the dirtybirds a hard time. As far as the team goes, I just can't get past all the Neon Deion, Rison, DeAngelo Hall, Vick types; I hate it when people have to hype themselves. I'm glad Warrick Dunn, a very classy guy, is no longer with that team so I can hate all of them again. And if Manning or Brady's teammates flaunted their support if either of them had tortured dogs, I'd be trashing the Colts or Pats. By the way, remember all the pro-Vick signs in the stands in the GeorgiaDome during the MNF game? Pathetic.
