  1. Seems like a perfect change of scenery type player. He's typically a well above average pitcher. He has struggled at home this year, which is strange. He has struggled against some mediocre offenses, while pitching well vs. good competition. His K rate is good. His HRs are inline with his career numbers. GB/FB ratio is at his career levels. His walk rate is higher than it should be this year, but he also has allowed a .331 average on batted balls in play. Career his BABIP is .287. His career worst is .315.
  2. 2008 Cubs have produced from their own system: Wood, Zambrano, Theriot, Soto, Marmol, Hill, Gallagher, Marshall, Wuertz, Cedeno. That's pretty good. Look around the league, not many teams can boast 3 all stars and that's not including Marmol, who's been one of the 2 relievers in baseball for nearly 2 years. Hill has played at an AS caliber in the past and Theriot has hovered around the top 10 in hitting all year long. Then you throw in Wellemeyer, Harris, Willis, Prior, Garland, Juan Cruz, Patterson, Ohman, Sisco, Nolasco, Pinto, and Mitre. I'd be very happy if the Cubs system can produce players like Z, Wood, Soto, Marmol and Hill every 5-6 years, add in a couple role players like Theriot, Wuertz and Cedeno, and be used to get guys like Lee and Ramirez.
  3. ESPN.com has changed. Says Dempster, Zambrano then Lilly vs. Cincinnati, which would keep all 3 pitchers on regular rest. Some combo of Marshall, Marquis should go Fri/Sat vs. SF, then Dempster ends it on Sunday, unless Lou feels the need to allow him to be able to pitch in the AS game, then it may be Gallagher.
  4. ICubs down 5-3, despite Patterson, Pie and Hoffpauir all having 2 hits. EPatt and Pie each have walked too.
  5. I would too, but you aren't going to do that anytime soon. Not this year, and probably not in this offseason either until you see if Laporta can hit.
  6. Seriously. It's a tough loss, but not the end of the world. I'm confident the Cubs can hit a struggling Wellemeyer. Marmol was great today. Lilly was pretty good. Aramis finally did something. Lee stayed hot. Derosa stayed hot. Cotts was good. Wood won't blow many save chances, especially ones with a 2-run lead. Will everyone agree it is time to worry when we go 2-4 the next 6 games? Hell we could be looking at a 2-7 finish if you look at the starting pitcher match ups. which would be extremely stupid, since the cubs have been very very very good at home and have a much better offense than the giants and pirates. We play the Reds. Oh and we can't hit Cueto, Volquez, Cain, and Lincecum. Or at least haven't yet. He, I meant 2-6 not 2-7. FYI, Cubs will miss Volquez. He pitches tomorrow, then again on Friday. Harang, Cueto and Arroyo will pitch. Cubs also got 6 hits and 3 ERs off Cueto in 6 innings the only time they faced him. They faced him w/o Ramirez or Edmonds, though with Soriano. The Cubs also miss Lincecum unless the Giants change their rotation with the day off Monday. Lincecum is slated to pitch Wednesday vs. the Mets. I don't see any reason why a team that's going nowhere would want their best young pitcher to pitch extra if he doesn't have to.
  7. According to Cubs.com, Zambrano is going thursday afternoon.
  8. Seriously. It's a tough loss, but not the end of the world. I'm confident the Cubs can hit a struggling Wellemeyer. Marmol was great today. Lilly was pretty good. Aramis finally did something. 9. I can't think of any where I wouldn't have minded a blown save. ;)
  10. Thru the heart of the Cards lineup too. C'mon Marmol. Be good.
  11. Maybe, maybe not. Still doesn't sway my opinion of his mental approach to the game. Nameless whispers aren't going to change mine. Of course not, it also includes a topic most on this board choose to ignore or refuse plays a role in the game. I hope you don't lump me in with that. I certainly recognize the major role scouting plays in the game from minors through the majors, and that mental makeup is a part of that. I just happen to be one who thinks most of those with the poor makeup are those that are weeded out by the time they hit the majors. It's not going to make or break a player b/c his problems are when he gets angry with himself and he's good enough often to pitch w/out getting pissed. But, he's not very poised espec. for a SP. I agree that Ted isn't the most mentally stable pitcher on the mound. Zambrano gets a lot of publicity for his antics, but Lilly has just as big of a temper when he makes mistakes. I think it has gotten a lot better though. In Toronto, he had big issues with his emotions.
  12. Makes me wonder why they don't put an option year on those contracts when they pick up the Lohses of the world. Where's the harm? By this point, these guys should be knocking down Duncan's door to come pitch for him, an option of ~7M shouldn't deter them. Boras overvalued him to begin with. He prob. still values Lohse as a 10/12mil per/4yr guy, he had to bite the bullet once, he won't do it again. Now there is more justification to get a 40+ mil. contract. Lohse definitely will get his money. I knew this was gonna be a good move for the Cards when I saw it. Welly, Looper, etc....now, that is just miraculous what he's been able to do with them.
  13. Neither. They won't sign Sabathia, and they can get a trade done without Laporta. I'm not that big on Gamel, being that he won't be a ML 3B.
  14. Might want to pick up a math book. 4 starts in arizona and 3 more in iowa is 7 total. On a normal 5 day roation thats a wopping 35 days. That is early to mid August and thats your worst case scenario (if he has turned the corner). Best case is a week or two after all-star break. Pitch a game or two in Arizona then get the break to reevaluate and look over his starts then a couple starts in Iowa. If all went well he would be back a week or two after all-star break. However I'm going to count it as a fluke session and not count on him at all. That way if he does turnaround its a huge bonus rather than the alternative of getting my hopes up and then being disappointed. You think worst case scenario....I think that's best case. He's been in the minors for 2 months now. He's not gonna prove he's perfectly fine in 3 starts as was suggested earlier. And you might not want to be an ass. 7 starts on a 5-man rotation is 35 days, add in 5 more in that scenario that it would take for him to pitch in the majors, that's 40. Add in probable off days and you're looking at a month and a half, which takes you to mid-to-late August. Add in the Cubs could have 7 capable starters by then, and why waste 1 or 2 starts in the final week(s) in August when Hill can be a Sept. call up.
  15. I doubt it matters much. Game was over by 10pm St Louis time. Game today isn't til 3pm CST. That's 17 hours between games (fwiw, Soto has consistently played Fri/Sat day games in Wrigley this year, which gives him about 19-20 hours between games...so not a big difference w/ the later start today). Plus, Soto has started several times in day games after he played a night game. Throw in the fact that he is swinging the bat with a vengeance right now and this is the Cardinals, there is no way Soto sits today.
  16. I think that's the best lineup for today, definitely.
  17. Even if he turns it around, how long does he have to show it before he comes back up? I'd imagine 3-4 starts in Arizona. Then probably a few more in Iowa. At best, you are looking at September for Hill. And even then he's behind Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster, Marquis, Marshall, Gallagher, and possibly whoever the Cubs trade for in the line to get ML starts.
