  1. In theory, that's not a bad idea. But , what the Cubs need to think of though is the $ angle as well. Corey's not cheap. He's in his arbitration years and I'm not exactly sure how the $ works, but I believe they need to offer him more than he made this year (which he obviously won't deserve). I just don't believe he's worth tying up $3-4MM for a guy who we hope can build back up his trade value so we can trade him later in the season to make room for Pie.
  2. Not only that, but with the possibility that both Murton and Cedeno could be regulars next season, I can't fathom Baker adding a 3rd youngster to the everyday lineup.
  3. How 'bout picking him (and his hefty contract) up to play 3B along with Cabrera for LF (along with his 'tude) and flipping Ramirez and Nolasco to FLA? That deal is DOA. .0001% chance of this happening... Walker & Ramirez for Castillo, Lowell & Delgado. Move Lee to LF. Seems a good athlete like Lee should be able to make the transition. Yeah, I know....I just got excited earlier when I read that Cabrera got benched for an attitude problem. Wishful thinking on my part.
  4. Getting Michaels away from Burrell might actually allow him to concentrate more on baseball than the Philly nightlife scene. Not a bad idea UK. Michaels has some skills.

  6. Thanks. I'm surprised he has O'Brien with a 65% chance of staying in CIN. I would think he would be a shorter leash.
  7. Hoops, I heard an interesting update last night on WIP. Howard Eskin (who has a knack for being right when it comes to reporting sports news in Philly - he's got some good connections) has stated that although PHL recently gave Wade a two year extension (the organization was very hush, hush about it) he will probably be fired if the Phillies do not make the playoffs. The Phillies would buy out his two year extension that they just gave him. Odd, but I wouldn't be surprised. The report also indicated that Cashman could be a candidate to take his place.
  8. His contract is heavily backloaded. It might be too expensive for the Marlins. Fair enough but why sign him to a backloaded contract in the first place? I'd like to think that most teams have the foresight to estimate their payroll situation one year down the road. Not totally sure, but wasn't their new stadium still up in the air when they signed him? I believe the low base salary in the first year, might have given them an out if the stadium deal fell through.
  9. With Ryan Howard emerging in PHL, I have to think that the Phils are going to be desperate to unload Thome this offseason. The Phils will be willing to pick up some of the contract. Whaddya think of the Cubs making a play for Thome (but them insisting on Abreu be in the deal) picking up more of the $ on Thome's contract, and then the Phils flipping Lee to a third team for a #1 starter?
  10. His contract is heavily backloaded. It might be too expensive for the Marlins.
  11. Hoops, If the Phillies don't make the post season, that might be a real possibility. Rumor here though is that Montgomery wants to give Wade an extension, but is afraid to announce it for fear of public backlash. At least that's what Howard Eskin, a fairly reliable Philly sports guy had said about a month or so ago. The Phillies ownership group is pretty tight knit. My guess is that if Wade goes, they would probably promote from within and pick their farm director Arbuckle to replace him.
  12. Sports unfortunately is a what have you done for me lately type of business. Both Hendry and Baker deserve blame for this season, but while I'd like to see Baker go (he's just the wrong manager for this team at this time), I would still like to see Hendry take another shot at it. He has his faults and is not the ideal GM, but there are some good qualities there, and he has done some good things. I'd like Hendry a lot more if he would make a managerial change, gettting away from Baker.
  13. Really, UK? I figure Hunsicker would want to stay as far away from Baltimore as possible since they have a meddlesome owner. I thought that is what partly drove Hunsaker away from Houston. Or was it that Drayton McLane was too cheap? I'd like to see him in BAL though, as I think he would do a good job there.
  14. Huh? He played 145 games last year. For GM, I'm surprised Gerry Hunsaker hasn't been mentioned. I thought he did a nice job putting together HOU's club during the 90's.
  15. In four playoff games thus far Patterson is 8-15 at the plate for a .533 BA Wow !
  16. I could care less about what he does off the field. I want to win a WS, not have model citizens and choir boys on my team. If he gets me closer and is a stong piece for a WS Championship, I want him on my team. I would like to see a WS Champion in my lifetime. I'm sick of the losing. Baker's being paid a lot of money for being a players manager. It's time for him to start earning some of that cash. He handled Bonds and Kent griping....he can handle Bradley.
  17. There had been discussion after the recent CBA deal that everything to do with the draft would be revamped, but to date it has not yet happened. I agree with most of your points, however I would like to see the Cubs get back into the International market. I'm not sure why, but it seems that they have strayed away from signing impact talent the last couple of years in Asia, Venezuela, and to an extent the DR. The loss of a 1st round pick due to the signing of a FA could be recouped in a sense if the Cubs could identify and land top talent in the International market. I assume the Cubs chief scout in the DR - Jose Serra is still there, but he's been quiet the past two years. Leon Lee of course is long gone....I'm not sure if there is anyone currently scouting for the Cubs in Venezuela.
  18. Getting him away from Jeff Kent would be a plus.
  19. Agreed. We'd probably need to gut the farm system to make a play for Abreu and I'm not sure that is worth it. Although, I believe Abreu could probably be had for a top flight starting pitcher. I'd rather contact DePotesta and see if they would have interest in moving their headache (Milton Bradley) for ours (Patterson). Both players most likely need changes of scenery. Bradley would have a manager he could probably play for in Baker. I wouldn't mind a Giles, Bradley, Murton outfield next season, with Pie pushing Murton if he falters.
  20. I'm pretty sure he signed a two year deal this past offseason.
  21. UK, No clue on where Lawton will end up. Your're right about his stats though. It's a typical Matt Lawton type of season, but that might be good enough to land him in the A class, certainly a B, I would think. It will be interesting to see what the Yankees do with him (if anything) with Bernie leaving. Protection is case Matsui leaves? Highly doubt he will, but anythings possible, I guess. Dierker looks good in that Cub hat BTW.
  22. I doubt that will happen. The Elias Sports bureau rankings determining FA compensation are generated from a players previous two year stat. average in relation to his peers at the position. Nomar hasn't done the Cubs any favors with his performance at the plate thus far this season.....I doubt he'll rate as a Type A FA.
  23. If someone were to offer him a contract, I can't see how he wouldn't play next year. With that being said though, I would think his options will be quite limited. I can't see him getting more than a $2MM 1 year deal with possible incentives built in, from a bottom feeding AL team looking for a gate attraction. Hello TB......KC.... Sammy is also currently 12 HR shy of 600, and I would guess he wants to probably to get a shot of getting into the 600 Club.
  24. My Delaware News Journal sports page this morning also hinted that a full no trade will accompany the 3 for $24MM rumored deal. Hope Billy's arm can stay attached for 3 more years if this deal goes down.
