Cato June was allowed to test the market, even though he played the "most important position in the Cover-2" at a pro bowl level. The Bears look like they don't want to give Lance Briggs a market value extended contract to play, what you call the most important position on the defense. Both of these guys were late round pics and Cato June is a silghtly oversized saftey. If the players and play at this position is so important, why aren't these guys locked up right away? I doubt we'll see a bunch a song and dance routine when it comes to Tommie Harris' contract. That's because Tommie's position is much more crucial to the performance of the defense. It's one of the easiest positions on the defense to fill and it is by no means the most important tampa-2 position. I've never heard anyone associated with this defense ever say anything like that.

The ability to get pressure with only the front 4 without blitzing is the big reason why the Tampa 2 works, and the team will always pick pass-rushing defensive linemen over any linebacker. The two safeties and the WILL are the next important, and the other two linebackers and the corners are the least important in the scheme. The big change that Chicago has made is to modify the system so that Urlacher becomes more important to the scheme to utilize his talents. Correct. Every defensive line position is more important than the WILL linebacker in the Cover-2.

So, if he sits out the whole season, he gives up all that cash. I can;t imagine this would garner him more money in the long run. Unless he get's moved, he'll give up a year in the absolute prime of his career, over 7 million dollars, and he'll have the "malcontent" label which would likely cost him money in his future contract. I have to beleive he's trying his hardest to force a trade right now and if that doesn't happen, he's going to play. I think he may have gone a little too far as it might be difficult to come back after all this "I'll never play another snap for the Bears again!" stuff.

This is mostly true. Unfortunatly for Briggs, he plays the most easily replaced position in the defensive scheme. He's a very good player in the system but a lot of linebackers would look pretty good playing next to Urlacher and playing wil linebacker behind the Bears defensive line. I don't think the drop off in production that would happen by losing Briggs is enough to justify spending the money on him. It looks like the Bears agree. I'd rather save the money for the plethora of players that will be requiring new contracts within the next two years. I agree that Briggs has the easiest position to replace, but that doesn't mean you do it just for the heck of it. I'd rather pay Briggs big money and keep the unit together than gambling with someone else having that type of ability and work ethic. Well, obviously the Bears aren't doing it for the heck of it. They think the resources required to extend Briggs are better spent elsewhere. I agree.

Oh, right, the information gained from nine or so innings that he has thrown against a collection of minor leaguers, with some major leaguers tossed in. Is it the 1.44 WHIP that excites you? San Diego is in luck, I mean, Termell Sledge is now a HR hitter. It's not who he's facing. It's that he's been able to consistantly throw the ground balls. He's been able get groundballs for exactly 9 whole innings against players, many of whom will not be in the majors this year. Tell me you can tell the difference. He's locating his sinker well, who he's facing has no bearing on his mechanics, or his location. Tell me you can tell the difference. I'm not a pitcher, but I bet if I was facing some little leaguers I could induce some weakly hit ground balls. On the other hand, I bet my ability would be more exposed against college hitters, they'd rough me up. The key is to throw at the first little leaguer's head, just to get 'em all thinking.
