  1. Is Abreu even a better hitter than Barrett anymore? He's older, his OPS is way lower, and he's got 8 HR. and he plays a position where it's easier to find an impact bat. Personally, I don't see the benefit of pursuing a declining Abreu at the expense of one of our best players. agreed. i would rather have jones & barrett than ?? and abreu.
  2. I think you could replace him with a tandem of Blanco and Soto the rest of the year, the questions is, realistically, what/who would you have to get in return to pull the trigger? what about next year and beyond? buy low sell high is always a good rule of thumb but it can also come back and bite you in the butt. they could have done the same thing with lee after last year but if lee continued on his 2005 pace and the prospects that were aquired for him dont pan out, how would the trade look in hindsight? I don't think D-Lee is a comparable situation. The probabitlity of Lee producing at a high level for a greater length of time is pretty high, while for Barrett, probably not. I would agree with Goony's assessment and also with your point about replacing Barrett in 2007, but if you can upgrade the outfield significantly going into next year you wouldn't necessarily need the production out of catcher that Barrett gives you. To add to that what would the chances of Jake Fox having a chance to break camp in '07? i dont think fox has much of a chance to play in the majors in 07. he's only hitting .198 at west tenn this year. if they can trade maddux for kottaras, i can see a kottaras/fox platoon in 2008 with barrett/kottaras catching in 07.

  4. I really think that Colletti and Towers are going to lowball Hendry at the deadline, and Hendry will sit on his hands and ship Maddux to one of those teams on a waiver deal, when they become more desperate. My general feeling is that there are so many teams on the cusp of contention that things will have to clear up a bit more before a real flurry of activity. i hope thats not the case. maddux seems to be in demand from several teams (dodgers, san diego, maybe the yanks) i would think that the cubs will be able to get something significant in return.
  5. not a good idea imo. i would rather see them trade aram if they are going to get rid of a big name for prospects. a barrett/kottaras duo at catcher next year sounds great to me.
  6. looks like maddux might be going to the padre's instead of the dodgers according to this: http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-cubnt26.html could only maddux get the cubs kottaras? if so, i hope it happens!
  7. i'm not big on aybar. exchange aybar for laroche and then i'd probably be interested. whats wrong with aybar? i dont know anything about him but he is a switch hitter and has put up some good #'s so far this year.
  8. from the The Orange County Register : "That untouchable group is probably limited to three players - catcher Russell Martin, right-hander Chad Billingsley and outfielder Matt Kemp, currently in Triple-A. All three have star potential. A well-stocked second tier of prospects would include outfielder Andre Ethier, right-hander Jonathan Broxton, infielder Willy Aybar and a group at Triple-A (Joel Guzman, James Loney and Andy LaRoche) that Colletti might be more inclined to trade" aram, amddux & dempster for ethier, broxton & aybar sounds good to me.
  9. He's got three pitches. Fastball, Curve, and Change. But only one of those pitches are above average and that's his Curve. He's got Lefty Specialist written all over him, but you never know... I wouldn't call his changeup "developed." Or maybe it is and its just awful. I thought I read somewhere that he's been using the Change since he got sent down earlier in the year. Maybe not? he threw several changes in the aaa all star game. his fb also was 90-92 as opposed to the 87-90 that he seemed to be at the last time he was with the cubs. if he can get his curve over i think he'll do fine.
  10. he is a lefty. maybe he'll be the next dontrelle willis except this time around for the cubs. colvin seems to have adjusted to wooden bats quite quickly btw.
  11. maybe pierre was traded and negron will be called up to the big's
  12. judging by larry's tenure with the cubs, so is adam dunn.
  13. if you could do this without getting rid of Dempster I would rather do it then. In order to get value a team has to be willing to part with value. The purpose of the trade would be to fulfill the Dodgers needs as well as the Cubs own needs. In this situation, the Dodgers need pitching and either Dempster or Howry could be used since they hold the most value in the pen. I'm not excluding Eyre, but he has an NTC. Ok. I realize that. But I dont know much about Broxton thats why I say if we could do it without getting rid of Dempster I would like it more Then shouldn't you take it upon yourself to learn more about the player instead of just deciding you would rather have Dempster? Closer is the most overrated "position" in baseball. i have heard steve stone on numerous occasions disagree with your assesment of a closer's importance. Am I the first who has ever disagreed with Steve Stone? He also advocates the Cubs trading Aramis for Izturis. thats true but his suggestion was izturis & prospects (aybar, kemp, either, braxton, guzman). i believe you will find looking at how highly sought & paid closer's are in the majors that most if not all gm's agree with stone as far as the value of a closer.

  15. it's obvious that dusty has something against hill and word has it that rothschild does too. while its true he has performed horribly in his major leauge starts this year due mosty to the # of walks, his minor leauge #'s show that his problems might be a mental thing (which cant be helped by dusty's & rothschilds attitude toward him). who cares if he's 26 if he's been hands down the best pitcher in the minors the last 2 years. i certainly hope they dont screw him up too much so there is something left for the new manager & pitching coach next year to work with.
  16. it is also quite possible that there are several more trades on the burner so who knows what the roster will look like come next week. i am glad to see wuretz & aardsma back up though. hopefully novoa will be on his way out soon to go along with williamson.
  17. guzamn was pulled in his last start due to cramps and since hill is starting today his schedule matches marshall's so i dont think there is much to speculate about- unless they would consider bringing up ryu instead of hill for some inane reason.
  18. perhaps you should investigate the facts before coming to a conclusion. per Bruce Miles in the Herald 7/22/06 : "Contenders may call about pitcher Greg Maddux, who does indeed have a no-trade clause in his contract, contrary to information put out previously." How does that change his evaluation? The Cubs are playing a game of semantics. Maddux says "if they ask me I may consider waiving my NTC", Cubs say "if he asks us we will consider trading him." Maddux has made it clear that he will waive his NTC, so if all the Cubs are worried about is bad PR by asking Maddux to waive his NTC, that would be pretty pathetic. When your a 20 below .500 team you shouldn't be worried about hurting somebody's feelings or looking bad to the media (the Cubs already do a good job at that). You should be worried about improving your team any way possible, so that next year you don't remain the laughing stock of MLB. he is assuming that if the cubs dont trade maddux they are at fault but if they dont, it just might be because maddux doesnt want to go.

  20. i would think to get either kemp or either, aram would have to be part of the deal along with maddux.
  21. how about pierre & williamson to the sox, garica & haeger to the pads & kottaras to the cubs. aram, maddux & dempster to the dodgers for aybar, kemp & ethier.
  22. Not sure what you saw on TV, but Maddux doesn't have a NTC, he just has a handshake agreement that Hendry will consult him and get approval on any trade. So did he said he'd be willing to accept a trade to a contender? If so, I guess I'm not really surprised. If he can pitch 2-3 months for a contender and get another shot at a WS ring rather than toil along with this bottom-feeding group, I don't blame him. That said, given his contract & his outings since April, I'm not sure who would want his services or how much help he would be. Maybe somebody has the link, but it was reported 2-3 weeks ago that he does in fact have a NTC. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=461941
  23. Given Giles' is 35 years old, that's a heck of an assumption. Agreed. Giles's power has completely disappeared (.389 SLG this year) and even though he still shows the ability to get on base (.392 OBP) I think Jones is the better option for the next couple years. perhaps giles was on the juice after all.
  24. howry is pitching close to his career stats so far this year and eyre has been a totally different pitcher since he went on the meds.
  25. i like ohman too.
