  1. Is the consensus here that the Rockies would be a more favorable opponent to "a team" that advances from the Cubs/D'backs series?
  2. Where is that? I've seen some seedy places in the city - notably the good ol' Mark Twain hotel just down the street from my apt - but haven't heard about the hotel w/ wall-to-wall mirrors.
  3. I for one was angry at Bartman for about 5 minutes. Like most sensible people, I was angry about being a Cubs fan for much longer than 5 minutes, acknowledging that it's hard to believe in this team at times, and then have them justify any doubt in them in horrific fashion. I think it's still outlandish how Bartman's name just "showed up" in the Sun-Times. Jag Mariotti mentioned how it was unfortunate that we all ganged up on him, and that he wrote how stupid Bartman was; but, of course, no real apology from Jag was to follow in the ample space left in his column.
  4. I'm still trying to figure out the connection... :? DeRosa's role w/ team expanding to mythical proportions based on 3rd party observations and opinions compounded by the interested parties who wish to perpetuate such image for their own gain. There, you happy? I just killed a good comical reference. Ugh.
  5. Or how many chances to hear Vance's wonderful southern drawl.... I've heard it over the phone. It's downright enchanting.
  6. I actually met the umpire clubhous attendant's wife - this is the same guy who's been in the paper the past couple of days due to his retirement - while out for a walk before a Cubs game this summer. She mentioned how much of an ogre Bruce Froemming is, and that her husband was glad to not have to deal with him anymore after this year. Even more so, according to her his wife is just brutal to deal with, as well.
  7. Until Geovany Soto punched him in the stomach and made him puke it back up. Geovany Soto. geovany soto is the new chuck norris SOTO Soto is better than Norris. When are we going to acknowledge Soto by his proper first name, Earth-vany? The greek soothsayers saw visions of Soto eons ago and named the planet thusly. In conclusion, I'd like to see Earth knock one out of the park tonight. Go Earth Soto!
  8. Didn't Clement say he wasn't comfortable with relieving? Not just uncomfortable; but his asthma would just kill him on the mound if he didn't get enough time to warm up. I think he needed something like 45 minutes before the game before he could pitch without being significantly affected by his asthma. So, they should ahve setup a stationary bike or something in the clubhouse. Have him get warmed up at the start of the game. It was the playoffs there should be no excuses. Z was running on fumes, from what I remember. He wasn't nearly as sharp as he was during the season. But he should have been an obvious candidate in Game 7. Best way to answer these types of questions is to just win the damn thing this year.
  9. The Yankees have said if he opts out, they're done with him. They've said they would not enter a bidding war, not that I trust much coming out of NY (Scarlett Johanson and Natalie Portman excluded, of course), including the A-rod rumor. I could see Boston, LAA and the Dodgers getting in the mix, White Sox as a dark horse (who knows) and Omar Minaya possibly seizing if he found some way to throw the Mets' hat into the ring. I think Boras would use Cubs more as rumor mill fodder, teasing Cubdom nationwide. Mets going to play him at 2nd? I dont see the Yankees just letting him go if he opts out. I think that is just them postering. Really doubt the Mets will get into it, hence the crack about Minaya. I doubt he'd move to LF, which is really the only place the Mets could put him. I think the Yankees would force A-rod to make a choice, i.e., make a deadline, and not drag out any offer they extend to him. Yankee pride.

  11. 99 years ... let's not be picky.
  12. Are you really confusing Spiezio and Ankiel or are you just typing things for the hell of it? What's the cocaine/Ankiel connection? he used it Brevity. Nice. Thanks.

  14. It turns into a bit of a poker game. Remember when the Red Sox put Manny Ramirez on waivers a couple of years ago? I think the Cubs were more or less just trying to strike the iron and see how hot it was.
  15. Ease up on Mr. Gallagher. Remember the papers when Sean was first called up? They referenced the "internet leak" when news broke of Sean's promotion before the Cubs announced it. I imagine a subtle message was sent to prevent future info from leaking out before the club officially releases info.
  16. He's been around these parts ... playing the part of Juan Cruz. Every ML team has these players.
  17. How would you? You have three lefties. No matter what combo's you use two lefties would have to go back to back. Not in most 3 game series. The best you could do is RLRLL. Take that 5 man rotation through 1 series and you only have 1 lefty. But by the 2nd series, you go back to back. It's inevitable that lefties will throw back to back against the same team quite often throughout any period of time. You could cut reduce them by having one guy constantly going on 3 days rest, therefore constantly shuffling the rotation, but that's not very likely. We'll be able to break up the LL back-to-backs once Prior returns ... /ducks
  18. Per Bruce Levine on Waddle & Silvy this morning, it sounds like Patterson will be primarily used in the outfield. Apparently he can't turn the double-play all that well.
  19. I cannot accurately describe what it felt like to be there when Wood started walking towards the mound last night. You could liken it to how it felt in old Chicago Stadium during the starting lineup intros. Was glad to see Kerry back on the mound pitching. It was a much-needed shot in the arm compared to the weak offerings by Marquis and Ohman. Hopefully this gets Marmol some extra rest, and they're both relatively fresh for the stretch run.
  20. Random question, but anyone ever go up to Wrigley trying to acquire tickets from a scalper after the first couple of innings? My girlfriend has a couple of cousins in town from Reno, and, if possible, I'd like to try and get them in. Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  21. I think Gallardo is the real deal, but I also think like most pitchers there will be a period of adjustment when teams start to get a book on him. That should give him 2-3 bad starts before he makes a counter adjustment. You also have to look at his IP. The original plan for him was to throw him in limited innings out of the bullpen so that he didn't get above 160 IP, and then let him loose in late August for the stretch run. He is now quickly approaching 160 IP. Will be interesting to see what they do at that point. Do they limit his IP to 5 innings a game no matter what? Do they just say forget it and ride him Dusty style. Isn't that what you do to horses, dude? It's not like fishing, but then again it is. You know, man? I'd say more, but I'm saving this nugget for ESPN's next MLB broadcast.
  22. Ummm an ambiguous "rrrrriiiiiiiiiiight" is probably the appropriate response here.
