    Some people need a scapegoat for every situation. The GMs job is to acquire good players for the team. It's not scapegoating to complain when your GM doesn't acquire good players for the team. It *is* scapegoating when the offseason is not yet over and we don't know just how open Schmidt was to leaving the west coast. Blaming the GM in a vacuum is the very definition of scapegoating. That's not even close to the definition. You could say it's premature to give up all hope for this offseason, but it's hardly premature to complain about the job Hendry has done as Cubs GM, he's been around for several years. I find it quite pathetic how much slack certain Cubs fans are willing to give a GM who created the mess that is this team, and who needs an unprecedented level of financial freedom just to have a chance to bring the team to mediocrity. And I cannot, for the life of me, comprehend why some of these fans blast other fans for expressing their dislike of the direction this team is heading. I think most fans do blame Hendry for this team, but to put the blame on Hendry for not getting Schimdt signed (for instance) is lame.

    Or sign Bonds and Church and have a loaded offense. Still need pitching. And if they sign Meche and Lilly, they'll still need pitching. If those are the only legitimate choices (at the prices being mentioned), I go with the kids and stack the offense. What did "going with the Kids" get us last year? About as far as going with guys like Meche will get us in 07. I agree with the Meche part, but I like taking the chance with Lilly. Then you can always try to pry away another starter via trades.

    I don't. I think the focus is Lilly and Meche, like we've been hearing all along. Zito will be choosing between the Mets for 5/75 and the Rangers for 6/100. I think he's going to get either Lilly or Meche not both. Meche is a backup to Lilly. Then Hendry will try like hell to pry another starter from a team. Which is a much better idea. I'll settle for Lilly, but Meche is a mess. Sign Lilly and try to trade for Westbrook, Penny or Jennings. Sounds good to me. A big no for Meche. Let KC have him.

    I've always thought it is a little presumptious to criticze a GM if a player chooses to go elsewhere. It sounds the Cubs offered him a deal, and so did LA. The player is incomplete control in the free aganet market, one of the few times in their career. If he wanted to stay out west that is more of a relfection of Schmidt's personal interest, not a negative against Hendry. If Hendry didn't even pursue him, then there would be an argument. But it looks like he did, and Schmidt decided to stay on the West Coast. The fact that the Cubs weren't mentioned as teams the Dodgers beat out to get Schmidt and the Cards were is the reason for my comment. Anyways, Jimbo is likely in full freakout mode and is currently outbidding himself several times to lock up Lilly and Meche Because you read one article where it didn't mention the Cubs?

    Unless you're referring to Zito, you can't make that statement, knowing that Schmidt wanted to stay on the West Coast. We weren't even mentioned in the 3 finalists for Schmidt. The Cardinals were. Last I checked, they weren't on the west coast. Well lets be honest, isn't the Cardinals at this point in time more deserible for a player with no midwest ties then Chicago?

    I like Drew, but no way in hell would I have given him 5/70 guaranteed. It's better then handing out $18-$20 per year for the tandum of Meche and Lilly. I just hope they're not going after both. If they got Drew they'd still be 2-3 pitchers short.

    Yep. Here comes the Cards, waiting to see who the Cubs want so they can swoop in and steal him out from under us. And probably and much less $$$$ too. Hendry needs to attend the Walt Joketty school on how to get players for less than their market value. Didn't Hendry do that with Ram and DLee?

    Two things, I don't see why it would necessarily cost $175-200m just to field a respectable team. And, 8 years ago people would have said the same thing, only using $75-90m as the number. There have been a heck of a lot of mediocre starting pitchers who have signed for between 8 and 10 million in recent years. This is not completely out of the blue. Plus, baseball balances this out with how cheap young talent is. In football, draftees get 8 figure signings bonuses and count huge against the cap right away. In baseball, you have guys like John Lackey, who has been a good pitcher for 4+ years and has barely made $4 million. Not every team has to sign free agent $10m 4th starters. Some teams, like Oakland, will always be more efficient with their money. You are acting as if everybody is going to look like the Cubs. The Cubs are going to spend more than the vast majority of teams. Because they have to make up for having a crappy farm system and an unwise GM. *sigh* Well that and they are one of the more popular teams in all of sports...

    Sorry if it was already posted but I thought it was interesting. In other words: I painted myself into a corner and now I'm screwed. In other words: I can't afford even one retooling year, because my sorry ass will be fired if I don't produce a winner overnight. We have been retooling, it seems, every year. It good to see us going for it this year.

    4/40 for a 4.36 ERA in 1st year of the deal? Awesome, what a bargain! feel free to share your ideas for what the cubs should do. They could've NOT tried to do a worst-to-first overnight rebuilding job in the least favorable market in the history of pro sports. maybe it's the least favorable. From what I've read, a lot of people don't expect this to be a bubble that will burst in the future. Contracts are just going to keep going up. Plus, even if they sign someone like Lilly for 4 years, that's not a crippling contract. Soriano is the only one with a very long, very expensive deal. It's a bubble. You can't have average #4 starting pitchers getting 4/40 deals indefinitely. The numbers just won't add up in the longterm. I can care less about long term. As a lifelong Cubs fan I want to win and win soon.

    It would take a lot more then that to get AROD. And of course AROD still needs to approve it, and I highly doubt he'll want to play for Ozzie. Didn't Ozzie and ARod get into a verbal spat recently? Yes. But then again who doesn't Ozzie or Kenny get into a verbal spat with.

    So Lilly's moving closer to signing even though his agent isn't there and so we haven't been talking? There are cell phones and fax machines in the world. Lilly's agent doesn't have to be there to have contract negotiations close to completion. What's the rush? It's only Monday. He's on his way there...

    I completely agree; to which I am mildly annoyed when some posters in this thread jump to conclusions based on those exact "guesses", and start posting lineups and rotations. While on its own it's not entirely bad (and what message boards are for), it is the emotional flipping out that gets me. Doesn't really bug me. Emotionally flipping out is part of being a Cubs fan. This is all part of the fun of the winter meetings. Guessing, changing lineups, rotation, dreaming. I love it!
