  1. You might see more of their action coming via trades. Just a guess at this early date. I don't see them paying $30 million a year for A-Rod. The protracted sale of the team probably will factor into things, but McDonough has given me every indication the team will be able to upgrade. Remember, people thought the Zambrano deal was dead, and it got done. Lets hope one of those trades involves Trachsel. Any word yet on why the Cubs would pick up Trachsel's option, when he was hardly ever used and had little value to the team during his short stay? LOL! I highly, highly doubt that. It's true according to Ken Rosenthal (Premium). I just read that in Transactions. I'm shocked if this is true. It simply must be a typo.

  3. Nice call. Replace the ones by the concession stands also.
  4. I already miss Cubs baseball...
  5. He's also a very intelligent person. He'd know what sells Wrigley, and lasers and big screens aren't it. The problem isn't selling Wrigley, the problem is that it's tapped out on revenue even though it sells. The purpose of “in-game entertainment" isn't so much to draw and entertain fans, but rather an opportunity to announce and advertise the sponsor (Today's dot race is brought to you by Pappa Johns). I wouldn't be surprised at all if Cuban added a big screen to Wrigley just for the revenue he could generate from it by showing sponsor advertisements. He's not that stupid. Plus, he said many times he like Wrigley the way it is. If he wants to generate more revenue just raise ticket prices. If the salary goes up with ticket prices, you'll hear no compliments from anyone. How would it be stupid? You think people are going to stop going to Wrigley just because he added a jumbotron? Yeah ... just like they were going to stop going once they added lights and played night games. Fenway added a Jumbotron, hasn't seemed to hurt their ticket sales any. Where would you put it? Right next to the scoreboard? It would be a eye sore, it would block the rooftops, and the City would never approve it.

  7. I'm not sure what you mean by "Modernize"? I could see him adding Wi-Fi, but thats about it. \ He'll think of creative ways to add premium seating, similar to what the Red Sox have done with Fenway putting seats on top green monster. The Tribune has already done that. I can't see where you can stick more seats.

  9. I don't know. I still think he'll get a budget and have money to spend. I mean being in limbo didn't stop them from signing Zambrano.
  10. So it's Boston @ Cleveland and Rox @ D'Backs. Yikes!
  11. I disagree. Colorado is still possibly able to deal Helton for something young and usable, while Atkins will shift to 1st and Ian Stewart will take over at 3rd base. I think they have a great young core to build around. Arizona won 90 games with the youngest team in the majors. Milwaukee is still a couple years away from feeling the pinch of arbitration and post arbitration. If any of these teams sign ONE key free agent, they all get better. They will all be looking at pitching, but even without it, they still look good for years to come. We have young guys who can play, and we have bigger payrolls, but we got lucky this year. We played in the worst division in baseball, and we barely pulled it out. I just don't see it for next year, short of signing ARod and finding a legit RF. One key signing doesn't always change things. Atlanta picked up the hottest player on the market and then promptly tanked. It happens quite a bit, actually. It's a little more complicated that you are making it out to be. Every year is a different year. Nobody knows what will happen in '08, standing here in Oct '07. I agree. Just look across town and see how fast things can change. Or the Mets. Hell, their is only 1 team that is in the playoffs from last year.
  12. The owners of the Cards, Reds, Pirates, and Astros? We out spend them now, and will continue to do so no matter who owns the Cubs based on current contracts. That'd be a stupid reason. But if they feel like Cuban would put a better product on the field, they may not like that. The Cubs success directly influences their success. I don't know if they would actually vote on that basis, but it's what came to mind. I don't think owners think like that. At least I hope not. If anything they want every Org. to be healthy. It's good for the game and their bottom line. I don't think owners would vote against a owner based on they will make the Cubs better? The Cubs being better is good for the health of the game. As Selig has stated many times.

  14. MLB has to approve ownership from the other 29 owners, I forget what the req'd ratio of approval has to be. As far as why, MLB is still a private entity and it helps to have backings to get into the good ole boy network. I assume most teams/owners don't want someone with the personality or the willingness of someone like Cuban owning a team. I think it's 75%, so, 22/29, I guess. Cuban said he has received some support from some owners already, but it seems like we would really need some help from owners that might be on the fence about him. I'm guessing, from what we've heard so far, that there's a good handful or so that are strongly opposed. Why would any owners oppose? It just blows me away! He would create excitement in the game. What would be the downside? Just don't get it. Maybe they think he'll spend money like an out of control owner and spike up salaries. Yeah I guess...God forbid the Cubs are actually good for many years. Like that's bad for baseball?!?!

  16. Interesting...Great interview. I'd love to see what he would bring not just to the Cubs but baseball. It's a shame we'll never see it happen.
  17. How in the wide, wide, world of sports can you say that? He's been given a handful of sporatic ABs while being a defensive replacement for almost the entire year. [this comment does not pertain directly to DKWG's post] It is the same crap again and again with our young players. A young player gets a handful of sporatic ABs during the year and "they can't hit major league pitching". Thank Soto has mashes the ball so far. I just don't understand the logic. He did have 177 AB's. He played in 26 games in June and hit .218. I understand this isn't much, but he hasn't shown much when he had the opportunity to show-case his stuff. He really hasn't done anything with the bat that excite's you. I hope he gets another shot at it next year. He can't be as bad as he's shown so far.
  18. I honestly thought this team was finished in June, so it was nice to see them fight for the playoffs. 2007 was an exhusting fun ride with a sucky ending. Kinda like a great movie with no payoff... It beats last year.
  19. Could be 4 straight sweeps to kick off the first round. WOW!
  20. Or a house. "I just spend $450,000!!!"
  21. And boy are my arms tired.
  22. As long as the keep raising team salary I'm fine with raising ticket prices. Hell, commit to 130 million next year and raise the prices 5 bucks across the board. I'm fine with that.
  23. This series was our year in a nutshell. When we are hot we look like we are going to the World Series. When we are cold we can't even beat the Marlins.
  24. You're assuming the next ownership will be better? Be careful what you wish for.
