  1. Bring in Rich Hill for the remainder?
  2. Randy Winn has a 1.673 OPS in September! - nice K by Prior.
  3. You know an injury replacement is the only way Neifi can bat below 2nd in the order.
  4. Thank you, Bruce! Cubs succeed when Murton, Cedeno both start Now, of course, that's because Dusty has used them only in these games where they 'had the best chance to succeed.' 1) If they don't play it's because they wouldn't have done well that day. 2) If they do play and do well, it's Dusty's genius spot usage. 3) If they play and don't do well, then return to step one with renewed fervor. So in the end, Dusty is always right.
  5. Len, You had me hooked when you mentioned "Three True Outcomes" in the home opener against the Brewers - just wondering what baseball web sites you routinely read. Thanks for the chat!
  6. Tribune Maybe his .327/.364/.582 have changed some minds...
  7. Are you kidding me? If the Cubs get to .500, they will probably extend Dusty for 10 more years. He will get all of the credit, just like he has gotten most of the credit for the last 2 years of over .500 ball. I'm still watching and rooting for the Cubs, but any success will be proof that Dusty's the man and his system is working. Dusty in the Trib - "From the stuff we went through, from different trials, different people, a young bullpen, an injured pitching staff, injured keystone, that still ain't too bad. It's not where we wanted to be, but when was the last time they had three winning records in a row? How long ago was that?" I was never in the "let's hope the Cubs lose them all" camp, until now.
  8. Clemens' getting shelled in Milwaukee. 5 ER through 3...
  9. In addition to the normal Sox series (US Cellular May 19-21) the Cubs will also play the AL Central as wild card opponents with the Twins on the road (no dates yet).
  10. Where can I see this stuff? Careful it might burn your eyes out - and I won't tell you why I was there.
  11. Great stuff...
  12. The Sox tentative schedule has the Cubs at US Cellular May 19-21. Interleague has the Centrals facing off, with the Sox playing Houston and St. Louis. (No other AL Central teams have schedules out yet, so no word on who the Cubs will see.)
  13. Relax. Just because other's don't agree that this is the gravest of situations doesn't mean you have to "give up." Since you were obviously refering to me about the above, it may behoove you to actually read what I wrote. I brought up the other contracts to see what the typical preformer like Maddux was earning. It wasn't just underpreformers there were some overpreformers in there as well. I found that he was over-paid by about double what he's making. I concluded that overpaying Maddux by 4 million dollars for one year when we have 40 million to spend isn't going to have a noticable impact on the team. What's wrong with that? You may disagree with it, but I'm not pulling it out of my arse either. I certianly never justified his contract. $4M is the difference between Aramis Ramirez and Jeremy Burnitz or Johnny Damon and Burnitz. While $4M is only 4% of a $100M payroll, it can be a difference maker. Are there other problems, yes. Is $4M still $4M that could get from Burnitiz to Aramis (for example), yes.
  14. But the ability to compare players on different teams and different eras was the impetus for the creation of win shares. There are certainly times where these metrics fall down a bit, but as a whole they appear to do a reasonable job of assigning merit.
  15. Too bad we can't play the Cards every day: 8-4 vs Cards <.500 vs rest of league.
  16. Neifi is vying with Macias for the team title...
  17. If you are going to get Maddux, jump on him in the 1st inning... 0-15 pitches OPS 1.051 16-30 pitches OPS 0.537 31-45 pitches OPS 0.844 46-60 pitches OPS 0.742 61-75 pitches OPS 0.688 76-90 pitches OPS 0.743 91-105 pitches OPS 0.624 106-120 pitches OPS 0.500
  18. Neifi vs. lefties in 109 AB: .315 avg, .339 OBP, .546 SLG Walker vs. lefties in 78 AB: .333 avg, .368 OBP, .577 SLG Although Neifi's much better batting from the right side, he's still no Todd Walker: OPS .885 vs .945
  19. BP's Joe Sheehan weighs in (registration required): WARP (wins above replacement, includes defense): WARP Derrek Lee 11.2 Albert Pujols 9.6 Roger Clemens 8.9 Jim Edmonds 8.9 Morgan Ensberg 8.8 Dontrelle Willis 8.8 Jason Bay 8.7 Miguel Cabrera 8.3 Marcus Giles 8.3 Todd Helton 8.1 Andruw Jones 8.1 "Derrek Lee has been the most valuable player in the National League... It's not going to be, though. ...voters may be inclined to treat this ballot as something of a lifetime achievement award for Pujols, who has been eating Bonds' dust for four remarkable seasons. Pujols getting the MVP Award would be wrong, but not silly, as he's clearly the second-best player in the league and at least within shouting distance of #1."
  20. I'm too stupid to know what you mean. :? That's not really the argument though. We aren't trying to see which guys will repeat their performance. Matt Murton's BABIP was super high at AA, but that doesn't mean he didn't perform better than a guy with lesser numbers who was more likely to repeat them. Fair enough. But I figured K-town could use the "but Roger's lucky card" a little here! And BTW, does anyone know Clemens career BABIP - he's been otherworldly with that this year. Leaders w/100 IP: 1. Roger Clemens .234 2. Pedro Martinez .242 3. Barry Zito .244 4. Rich Harden .255 5. Carlos Zambrano .258 6. Joe Blanton .259 7. Jose Contreras .261 8. Tony Armas Jr. .263 9. Roy Halladay .264 10. Bruce Chen .265 11. Tim Wakefield .266 12. Horacio Ramirez .267 13. Chris Carpenter .268
  21. K-town, you want a better argument, try posting only this - "BABIP (and the Astros defense looks about the same as the Cards)."
  22. It's funny, they say that the only stat we care about is ERA, but ignore VORP, RS, and EXP W/L. We've provide them some additonal stats, but they simply ignore it. And I'll say this for the last time. My case against Carpenter has nothing to do with his being a Cardinal. I hate the Astros, including Clemens, as much as I do the Cardinals. Ask my nephew how much I laughed at Clemens's shelling in the 2004 ASG. I hate the man, but I've got to give him his due. He's been a better pitcher than Carpenter this year, and therefore, should win the Cy Young. The ERA dictates all of those other numbers. It's like saying "I'm not eating sugar, I'm eating cake". Hmmm.... the number of runs you allow effects how good of a pitcher you are? Never thought of that one...
