  1. You know it's sad when every time I'm refreshing a thread and I can't connect to the server I get kind of excited that the site's being overwhelmed with responses to Dusty's firing in Discussions.
  2. McClendon, Robinson, Alou, Dusty... ...calling Scoop Jackson...
  3. Some of this was posted elsewhere in looking at the Cubs futility, but it fits here as well, so... BP (and other sites, but in this case BP) looks at how many runs a team "should" score given the same offensive outputs (hits, doubles, SB, etc.). In looking at the NL, the Cubs have scored 22 runs fewer than would be expected and the Cards have scored 55 more than expected. Looking at the NL Central offenses and runs expected vs. actual: Cubs -22 Cards +53 Astros +25 Brewers -1 Reds +2 Pirates +8 There is also a similar way look at what opposing teams have done against a pitching staff and what number of runs that would be expected. The Cardinals are about on target on the defensive end. Using these 2 methods, the luckiest team in the NL is...the Cardinals, at 7 games better than expected followed closely by the 'amazing' Nationals. Now there will be outcries that fundamental teams are better at scoring runs. Walks are the key? The Red Sox are about equal to what their peripheral stats would suggest. Small ball? When analyzed, its been no more likely to add runs. (Though the luckiest team in the league - the Good Guys, have scored 29 runs more than expected - even when accounting for the speedy Scott P). The Cards were similarly advantaged last year. That's baseball.
  4. If it is indeed true that Wood will be shut down soon (when the Cubs fall further out), this does make some sense. You need to see if Kerry can be an effective reliever. There is a possibility (I hope a slim one) that Kerry can no longer be a starter with his arm troubles. We're stuck with him next year, let's see if he could have some utility in this role. It looks like it's not the type of injury that can get much worse with use.
  5. I miss the good old days when we found CREATIVE ways to lose.
  6. Well, even the most promising lineup of the year is pathetic. Now Dusty can say he tried it out and, darn it, it just didn't work.
  7. That looked like a pop-up by his swing. Sometimes I wish I liked football...
  8. Nice patience by Williams to make a good play on that soft liner .
  9. Tribune "Wood is likely to be shut down by September if management believes the Cubs have little or no chance to overcome the sizable deficit they face."
  10. My wife and 2 young children have been out of town for the past week, and it's summer and I work for a University. I was very excited about the prospect of devoting the past week to Cubs baseball. And what did I get? Another stick in the eye. The Cubs have ruined my summer - again.
  11. I've been looking at this for a while now. Part of the reason the Cubs are so frustrating is that they've scored less than their stats (single, doubles, etc.) suggest they should. BP (and other sites, but in this case BP) looks at how many runs a team "should" score given the same offensive outputs. In looking at the NL, the Cubs have scored 22 runs fewer than would be expected. Looking at the NL Central offenses and runs expected vs. actual: Cubs -22 Cards +53 Astros +25 Brewers -1 Reds +2 Pirates +8 The only more futile team in the NL is the D'backs (-25). In the AL, the Orioles are a staggering -52! Now that's not going to turn the tide (22 runs is approximately 2 wins during the year), but it does go toward advancing the lack of luck of this team. Some may wish to believe that our lack of fundamentals and "small ball" are to blame. They may be, but there has been no good correlation between style of play and "offensive efficiency". So in the end, the Cubs are - get this - unlucky. As if stats were needed to further a 97 year old argument!
  12. Baby steps to the doorway...
  13. I can just picture Ronnie exploding on the team bus. Slapping Aramis and telling him to keep his head in the game...
  14. I can't watch, did he say something or is he just generally downcast? A fan was yelling below the box and could be caught on the mic. Ron says "I'm going to shoot that guy." :camper:
  15. Ron has to watch this happen against the Mets. (Hopefully he doesn't really shoot anyone...)
  16. Hollandsworth, Perez, and Macias contributed 1/2 of the team's hits AND WE STILL LOST!
  17. Santo on hearing he'd won the attendance game "I don't care". Pat, "Neither do I, Ron".
  18. Anyone?? when Z came off larry came over to talk to him, z shook his head, slit his throat and walked into the clubhouse, larry started to follow but z was obviously done. larry did look kinda perturbed but turned to baker to let him know z was done I turned the game off earlier so I didn't see this. Interesting. I'm sure quite a few guys are feeling just like he is right now. I was planning on taking my cubs hat with me while I go on vacation for the next few days, but I won't be doing that. You HAVE TO BRING THE HAT. If we only wore them when they're winning you'd never see a Cubs hat!
  19. At least the Cubs didn't wait for the last week of the season to totally collapse.
  20. Ron Santo - "I can't see this getting any worse than it is now."
  21. Why'd you have to go and give me a reason to stick around?
  22. I remember when I used to think the Cubs had a guaranteed win when Prior, Wood, or Zambrano were starting. Wood's now a reliever, Prior keeps proving me wrong... ...uggh...
  23. Go study. It's probably more enjoyable then this side-show Cub team. I turned to 6 Feet Under. Thanks all. Back to studying. First semester Pharm.D, or Cubs losing? Hmm. I think if i watch any more pitiful Cubs losses this year, I'm gonna need the Pharm.D to pay for the therapy.... What the heck pharmacy program has you in class on August 7th. At least you'll learn how antidepressants work soon.
