  1. One of the main reasons I've always loved baseball isn't the action. It's the downtime in between. The breaks in the action give us time to stop and think about what might happen. It's time to sit there and think about defensive alignment and pitch sequencing. But more than anything for me, that downtime (in the late innings at least) is spent thinking "what should the manager be doing?" Should he pinch hit? Should there be a pinch runner? Is he going to send the runner? Is he going to call for a sac bunt? I love the strategy of baseball every bit as much as I love the action on the field. The pitcher coming to bat in the late innings is the holy grail of strategic choices. I guess I'm just not ready to part with that.
  2. I liked it too. Solid article. I would have liked to see you flesh out how you came to the +3 win conclusion at the end (not that I disagree). Are you saying Fielder's bat = 50 runs; Fielder's glove/running = -13 runs; Cabrera at 3B = -13 runs (is that 13 runs worse than what his value at 1b was?) so net is + 24 runs = +3 wins? Or am I missing something? Oh, I totally ballparked the estimate on 3 wins. I probably should have gone into depth to figure out exactly how much better it makes them, but my intent was just to write about why the contract is worrisome. My half-assed thinking, for what it's worth. An Inge/Kelly platoon at 3B is probably worth about 1 WAR. Cabrera at 3B is probably worth about 6 WAR. At 1B he'd have been worth about 7. Fielder stays worth about 5. So 2 wins worse at 1B, 5 wins better at 3B. 3 wins better. with this, you're essentially saying he's going to be 25 runs worse in the field at 3B than he was at 1B, which seems...pretty unlikely Its not just defense. I'm expecting some offensive regression as a result of the move, as well as factoring in a somewhat higher risk of injury.
  3. Also, that Rob guy is a pretentious douchenozzle just begging to be mocked.
  4. Prado can't really play 2B anymore.

  6. Holy crap, bunch of praise popped up this thread. Thanks everybody! soapy, I do have a twitter account. It's @RHickey66. I currently have 7 followers. But I announce my articles when they go up, so follow me if you'd like. davearm, I quite liked your Fielder article actually. But I didn't see it on the front page and assumed it had been deleted. I didn't realize it was from that long ago or else I would have clicked back a page.
  7. This is basically my own blog. Only difference is I'm not swearing as much as I probably would otherwise. When Tim approached me about writing for the site, he asked who else I would recommend. TT was at the top of that list. I also seem to recall recommending almost everybody that posts in the minor league forum too. And I know I recommended imb, cause that would be funny as hell. I wonder where Tim is with getting new writers...
  8. Thanks! I'm glad to hear that. Actually, that's a pretty good idea. I think I may just have to steal it. ;)
  9. im gonna give you props for sticking with the front page thing. it's at the point that i read all your articles just because you stuck with it, unlike, ahem, everyone else. I appreciate that, truly. But I haven't been posting nearly enough. I kept waiting for something to happen to the Cubs that I could write about... but absolutely nothing had happened since Maholm. It's a learning experience. Right now I'm learning how to figure out what the hell to write about. Hopefully the quality is worthwhile, at least.
  10. The more I think about this contract the funnier it gets.
  11. No, because there's no Cuban baseball player whose last name is Solar, doofus. I used to call him Soler... then enough people were using Solar that I found myself doing so. Now, every time I want to type his name I have to stop and consciously think about which one it is, which annoys me to no end.
  12. I still can't get over how bad this deal is.
  13. Wow... That's an awful, awful contract. I'm much happier with Rizzo, thank you.
  14. There's about zero FA 2B I'd be interested in right now... unless it's secretly 2006 and Carlos Guillen wants a one year contract, of course. There's not much more in the trade market. We could get a guy like Prado, but he's older and already a poor enough defender he's been moved off 2B once. He definitely doesn't fit the mold of a guy who should be anything more than a stopgap solution. There's guys like Brignac and EY Jr who once had some prospect shine... but they're no younger than Barney and are currently much worse players. The smart course of action is to sit back, relax, and let Barney hold down the fort until somebody new becomes available or someone forces their way up from the minors. It might not happen in 2012, but Lake could put himself in the discussion before too long... after that, we've got Torreyes, DeVoss, Watkins, Hernandez, Amaya and others who should be along shortly after. And hell, depending on the possible trades we could be making, that list may get even longer. But there's gonna be a wait before there's a better option than Barney.
  15. That last bit isn't technically true. He's got 2 years and 170 days of service time. So there's still 4 more years of surprisingly expensive club control.
  16. I like Porcello more than most around here, but even I can't say I'd be happy about a deal with him as the centerpiece. Hell, if he's even the #2 piece in a deal we had better be getting back some very interesting third and fourth pieces.
  17. Isnt that OMC's cousin or something?
  18. I HAVE PRINCE ON MY FANTASY TEAM SO I HOPE HE SIGNS WITH THE RANGERS. Yup, it's that time of year again.
  19. I really hope Fielder ends up in Texas. That offense would be crazy good when everybody is healthy.
  20. Given that's the best deal Pena could muster, we're lucky he didn't accept the offer of arbitration. But he didn't. And now that he's signed elsewhere, we get a draft pick.
  21. Indeterminate. They are expected to establish residency sometime "soon." After that, it could be anywhere from 2 hours to 2 weeks before they've cleared the necessary hurdles to be declared a free agent. I expect Soler will take his time shopping around though.
  22. I can't imagine my reaction to the cutting of Rodrigo Lopez would be any different from my reaction to the signing.
  23. Lie about your age... whatever, I don't care. Make me need to learn a new name? I hate you and you are all that's wrong with this sport.
