  1. I dug this up from Adam Greenberg in an interview last Fall (11.17.04): "They led the league in home runs, but were near the bottom in on-base percentage (11th in the NL)," said Greenberg, who has a career OBP of .384. "Keep putting more people on base and keep hitting home runs, you do the math, you're going to score more runs. If they need a leadoff hitter, that's what I bring to the table. I have to believe that." I've seen in several articles today only noting Greenberg's .275 BA at WT this season. No one mentioned that he's exactly on his career OBP number of .384 at the time of his call up. While I don't expect Greenberg to play much, especially if Hairston continues to hit, his approach is refreshing.
  2. thnx for da sig you're welcome.
  3. It's important that Murton and Greenberg start when they come up. Dusty has a tendency to give the young guys an AB or two in a PH role when they are first called up and then let them sit a couple days before giving them a rare start. That's just a terrible way to debut a youngster in the majors in my opinion. Look no further than how Cox handled Francouer last night. He looked very nervous in his first couple AB's in front of the friends and family. Getting those AB's out of the way set up his blast in the 8th. There is no way in the world he comes off the bench in that spot and does anything similar. Now, he has Francouer's confidence elevated and if there were any doubts in his head that he could not handle ML pitching; they are eliminated. Bobby Cox does this with all the young players. They start a game or two as soon as they arrive to the club. Then, Cox decides how to best incorporate those young players over the long haul. He did the same thing with Nick Green and Charles Thomas last season. The same goes this season for McCann, Langerhans, Johnson, and now Francouer. I have utmost confidence in Dusty that he will handle Murton and Greenberg in the worst possible way.
  4. Phil Rogers ripped Baker a new one this morning as well. We'll see if Mariotti follows along with the trend.
  5. Ah, that's what I was wondering. It's all good MembersOnlyJacket. It's early in the morning, and I'm sure you haven't had your coffee yet. ;) Call it wishful thinking, I guess. :D
  6. CoachC, Macias was DFA'd when Cedeno was brought up.
  7. problem is, he's not the 25th man. Yep. Cubs PH Hits-AB: Jose Macias, 7-31 Todd Hollandsworth, 3-12 Jason Dubois, 3-12 Jerry Hairston, 2-12 Ben Grieve, 3-10 Jose Macias is called upon time and again by Dusty to PH, particularly in key spots (i.e. Monday Night). He fails at a dramatic rate. He is Dusty's go-to guy off the bench and the stats bear it out plain as can be. It's disgusting.
  8. Clue number one that these kids won't play under Dusty Baker's managerial reign: “It depends on who we’re playing; it depends who’s pitching,” Baker said Thursday night. “Greenberg’s left-handed, and Murton’s right-handed. We’ve got (veteran) guys here, too. We want to get them in there. They’re here to play and give us a spark.” He wants to play them, one's a lefty, the other is a righty, but we've got veterans! It's those veterans that have led this club into the back of the pack in the NL. Jim Hendry didn't cut Macias, so he will be the first man called upon on a regular basis.
  9. Greenberg, Murton, and Cedeno on the roster. Looks like Hendry got brainwashed by the Braves infusion of youth success. Of course, I don't see them doing anything else but cheerleading. How is Macias still on the roster ?
  10. If they release Macias, the Cubs could turn this sinking ship around...
  11. No rain to save the Cubs today. 1 run might be enough for the Bravos.
  12. Gm 1 Prediction: Hairston Walker Ramirez Burnitz Dubois Barrett Cedeno Patterson Gm 2 Prediction: Perez Macias Walker Ramirez Burnitz Hollandsworth Patterson Blanco
  13. Manager: Brad Mills Pitching Coach: Rick Petersen Hitting Coach: Rick Down 1st Base: Vince Coleman 3rd Base: Chris Speier
  14. By the way, if we got one of those KC relievers, I wouldn't mind seeing Matt Stairs and Tony Graffanino come along for the ride too. Stairs over .800 OPS and Graf's ability to play 3B/2B would mean less Todd Hollandsworth and cutting Jose Macias. I've been trumping Stairs for quite sometime and I hope he's added to the club regardless of whether the Cubs make a major OF addition. Honestly though, do you see any circumstance in which the Cubs release Macias ? By all accounts (Hendry's comments, Baker's love), Macias is considered a valuable part of the Cubs by the management. I'd imagine the only one sitting there rolling his eyes at Macias in organizational pow-wow's is Fleita.
  15. Jerry Remy and Eckersley on the nesn pre-game show both think this is a wait and see type deal with further evaluation at the A-S Break. Eckersley, who would know better than anyone about the conversion, said if Schilling fails in the bullpen you basically lose him for a month until he builds back the arm to be an effective starter.
  16. as an aside, corey should do a fine job in the 8th spot hitting ahead of the pitcher. why not let him hit 9th ahead of perez and macias so he can use his speed and they can drive him in ? haha.
  17. There was that day when Lenny Harris batted 5th. I remember it vividly. It was against the Pirates and the Cubs lost.
  18. That's just awesome. Hopefully the last two games of this series are rained out.
  19. Perhaps using players who get on base might help. Or aligning the lineup such that you have hitters who are successful w/runners on or in SP get the bulk of the chances. Not, Jose Macias with the bases loaded and then come bitch to the media that your team isn't hitting w/runners on. What a shocker! Macias is .167/2 rbi in 18 chances with RISP. I'd rather have Don Baylor. I'm not kidding.
  20. Hairston takes his frustration public as he is not in the lineup leading off and the worst two options in baseball continue to be shuffled in that spot: Hairston Puzzled This should help Hairston go right into the doghouse. :?
  21. Rocket, you are today's guess the lineup winner! For your achievement, you get: http://www.dailyvault.com/wham_make.jpg
  22. Rick Mahler was the ace of the staff through the almost the entire decade. He was amongst the league leaders in IP and CG a few times. He should be admired for taking the mound every fifth day for years on those teams.
  23. Baker is in a tough spot here with Hairston/Hollandsworth/Walker. Hairston has been on base 6 of 10 PA since he was put in the leadoff spot. His OBP is up to .367 on the season. Hollandsworth is 8-20 with 5 RBI in his last 6 games. Walker is 2-19 in his last 5 games. Perez is 5-37 with a walk in his last 10 games. All indications are that Walker/Patterson will be in the lineup leaving Hairston without a position. Therefore, we'll probably see this gem since the Cubs need "speed" at the top of the lineup: Perez Walker Lee Burnitz Ramirez Hollandsworth Patterson Barrett/Blanco I would like to see Cedeno get a shot at leadoff tonight, but I think that's doubtful as Dusty seems to have no issues with Perez's current case of easyoutism.
  24. How does Dusty think Hendry will acquire this great leadoff hitter ? Unless it's Hendry calling up Matt Lawton from the Pirates to play LF and hit 1st or 2nd with Walker, I don't see it. There are few canidates who fit the profile: Clark, OF, .383 OBP Lawton, OF, .380 OBP Inge, OF/3B, .382 OBP Other than that, it has to be Hairston, Walker.
  25. All the offense comes from one man and you don't even build the lineup around him. I despise Dusty Baker. I've had enough of him.
