  1. I don't have a clip, but I haven't looked at the radio or tv archives. The Bonds-Prior game was 5/1/2003. http://www.sfgate.com/c/pictures/2003/05/02/sp_giants01.jpg http://www.sfgate.com/c/pictures/2003/05/02/sp_giants02.jpg http://www.sfgate.com/c/pictures/2003/05/02/sp_giants03.jpg http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/mlb/photo/photogallery/season_2003/0501/02.jpg There's another better picture that ran in the Trib, I think, of Bonds basically picking Miller off the ground while Prior is walking off the mound and waving him on. I'm working on the Z moment.
  2. If I were an O's fan, I think I'd be mighty sick of that attitude. :? What do Orioles fans think about this proposed deal?
  3. Kaplan said that he heard that Hendry was pushing hard to acquire Zito, and P. Sullivan said that he had heard that from his sources also. I say just sit on him and don't flip him. That would be an awesome rotation. I agree with you as long as Pie (stated earlier) isn't in the deal and Zito agrees to a contract extension before the trade. Of course. Zito agreeing to a long-term extention would have to be a dealbreaker. He's already said he wouldn't with regards to Baltimore. (he or his agent, and I don't know who his agent is, maybe someone else does) Whether it's Baltimore or free agency wasn't clear.
  4. Thanks, I'm glad we don't need to use it too often now. If no one else volunteers ... :D
  5. That may change soon. As the AL East gets stronger (Toronto looks good), Tampa is a few years away yet, Baltimore, meh..... Teams like Cleveland and Oakland will have a shot at a wild card once again. Didn't Anaheim make it via wild card the year they were in the Series? Boston has been the AL wild card the last 3 years. 2002 Anaheim 2001 Oakland 2000 Seattle 1999 Boston 1998 Boston 1997 New York 1996 Baltimore 1995 New York ETA: yes, Anaheim was the WC team when they won it all ... so was San Fran
  6. Supposedly Zito isn't going to negotiate for a long-term contract with Baltimore if dealt and that cooled Baltimore's interest in somehow including him in a Tejada deal. I don't know if the refusal to negotiate was due to the O's or due to a desire to test free agency.
  7. It's an interesting discussion. I'd agree on the passive aspect. It took awhile for anyone to show up, long-time fans or casual.
  8. KW's quotes were getting a lot of play on the Score earlier -- the thrust being that the White Sox are poised to take over Chicago's fan base. Winning does help popularity.
  9. No indication of that being the case.
  10. I'd still guess that Tejada gets moved, though it may take a while. I'd hope that Hendry keeps testing the waters. I've explained why I don't want Prior (or Z) as part of any trade. But under most other circumstances, I'd love to see Tejada in a Cubs uni. :)
  11. Interesting. I've read the 'net theory that the offer was on the table and turned down, and the Cubs are just denying it via the media. Or this is posturing, trying to see if Hendry is desperate enough to send them Z. And let's hope he's found his brain and decided that the Cubs with Prior are better than the Cubs with Tejada and no Prior. Maybe looking to up the offers. I doubt Tejada will be satisfied with the signing of Burnitz.

  13. Vance, I just made this today's trade rumor thread; hope you don't mind. Don, supposedly we must consider Bedard's 2005 pre- and post-All Star game splits and believe that the pre-ASG split is the true Bedard (as O's fans do). He was injured in the second half. That doesn't change the fact that he'll be 27 and has 220 kind-of-ok innings vs. 60 very good innings.
  14. Your method would seem to be the best if you wanted to maximize player value. Hate to bring up the Billy Beane wars, but it wasn't just sheer chance that word was out that some or all of the Big 3 would have to be dealt. As far as we know, they weren't declared "untouchable" and then randomly dangled for players who suddenly demanded trades.
  15. That appears to be the new Trib-Sullivan article. [libel] I should have known from the tone. [/libel] I'd be a whole lot happier if he weren't betting Prior's future as well.
  16. Hopefully harder than he worked the phones to get a big bat for RF.
  17. Sometimes courtesy is a two-way street. It's more likely to be returned when it's extended. And sometimes it takes awhile for people to recognize the contributions of new posters because there has been a lot of growth on the site lately.
  18. Nah, corner outfielders don't hit 2nd. Unless maybe a Macias or Neifi type is put out there. Which is a whole different problem to have.
  19. The Cubs have devoted large chunks of the off-season to pursuing other shortstops, and one of their very first signings was of Neifi, whose primary position recently has been SS. Despite whatever Hendry says about the intentions of Cedeno getting playing time at SS or 2B, the actions of the Cubs don't match the rhetoric.
  20. Prior's walk year is three seasons away. It would seem premature to trade him now based on the suspicion he'd walk 3 years from now. As others have noted, Z's walk year is two season away and Boras is his agent. The likelihood that he will test free agency sooner seems higher. I still wouldn't trade either unless the return blew me out of the water and I was dead certain neither was interested in staying. I'd be more concerned with that issue about trading for Tejada, who -- if traded -- will be able to demand a trade after one season.
  21. I was actually joking a bit about the bathrooms, too. :D The Cubs obviously had to institute some crowd control measures to contain the throngs of ardent Jacques Jones fans in the RF bleachers. :) I wonder who will get those seats.
  22. If it's #1, then the responsible thing to do would be to spend the next 3 years trying to win with him, and hopefully change his mind before he gets the chance. If, by chance, 2.5 years from now the situation hasn't changed, then you put him up for auction to the highest bidding contender and get the most you possibly can for him. Don't except less now just because some people are hung up on the linedrive. Exactly. Several posters here believe that the Cubs control Prior's rights for another 3 years, and that matches up with everything I've read and heard from the time he was drafted and signed. Sullivan did write in today's Trib that the Cubs only control him for another 2 years. I believe it's 3, but I'll acknowledge some uncertainty exists. That said, unless Prior hates the Cubs SO MUCH that he would sabotage his career out of spite, vengeance and an inner burning rage that cannot be appeased, it doesn't make much sense to say he must be traded now to avoid him walking in 2-3 years. There's more short-term danger of Tejada hating the Cubs and demanding to walk after this next season. What if Pawalek hates the Cubs? Will Hendry trade him as soon as possible to avoid him leaving several years from now? Though I'm sure if Prior is traded, we'll hear all about how he hated the Cubs. Maybe they even have a videotape to PROVE it.
  23. I disagree. Nothing wrong with that. another boring stats listing, but it IS funny to see you dismiss Prior as inconsistent and then excuse concerns over trading him because he's no Nolan Ryan. heh. Name Age YR IPs ERA WHIP K/9 BB/9 K/BB ERA+* HR/9 OPPavg Nolan 21 68 134 3.09 2.67 8.9 5.0 1.8 24 .81 .200 Prior 21 02 117 3.32 1.17 11.3 2.9 3.9 122 1.08 .226 Nolan 22 69 89 3.53 1.27 9.3 5.3 1.8 104 .30 .189 Prior 22 03 211 2.43 1.10 10.4 2.1 4.9 175 .64 .231 Nolan 23 70 132 3.42 1.39 8.5 6.6 1.3 117 .78 .188 Prior 23 04 119 4.02 1.21 10.5 3.6 2.9 113 1.06 .251 Nolan 24 71 152 3.97 1.59 8.1 6.9 1.2 86 .47 .219 Prior 24 05 167 3.67 1.21 10.2 3.2 3.2 116 1.35 .227 *ERA+ as Baseball Reference does it -- % +"better than" league average Nolan had the advantage of pitching in a much less offensive era (baseball-wise); he pitched out of the bullpen often in his early days; and he pitched in pitching parks. [for the Gallagher fans out there, Nolan was also a 12th round draft pick] You scoff at the notion that Prior is some sort of Nolan Ryan. Would you trade a 24-year-old Nolan Ryan for Miguel Tejada? Because Prior is better at 24 years old than Nolan was. *ETA: this is not a knock on NOLAN -- you don't pitch 7 no-hitters on a fluke. He was unhittable quite often, and who doesn't love NOLAN? But you also don't dismiss what Prior has done consistently and early on compared to other pitchers ... especially since Chicago sports radio seems to think Prior sucks but all these other pitchers rocked.
